Hellbraune geglättete Kalbslederbände der Zeit mit 2 farbigen, goldgeprägten Rückenschilder, rei…cher Rückenvergoldung, Deckelfileten mit Eckfleurons, Stehkantenvergoldung und Innenkantenprägung sowie blaugrün marmoriertem Schnitt und ebensolchen Vorsätzen. Deckel nur ganz gering bekratzt und leicht fleckig, Vorderdeckel des ersten Bandes mit leichter Dunklungsspur unten. der ersten Biographie über den bedeutenden Unternehmer und Ökonomen Richard Cobden (1804-1865), der in zahlreichen "Speeches", in seinen öffentlichen Reden den Freihandel propagierte, indem er die strikten "Corn Laws" diskreditierte und zu deren Abschaffung aufrief. Mit "Corn Laws" hatte die konservative britische Regierung der Tories den Getreidehandel protegieren wollen, indem sie Einfuhren mit hohen Zöllen belegte. Tatsächlich schaffte der Premierminister Robert die "Corn Laws" dann im Jahre 1846 ab, so dass in Folge die Hungersnöte ein schlagartiges Ende fanden, der Weg allerdings auch frei wurde für einen hemmungslosen Kapitalismus. Dieses von allen Gesetzen befreite Spiel der Marktkräfte nahm dann vor allem von der Stadt Manchester und ihrer starken Stoffindustrie einen Ausgang, der in einen unheilvollen Raubtierkapitalismus mit der Ausbeutung des Proletariats mündete. Richard Cobden steht auch als Ideengeber des Manchesterlieberalismus bzw. Manchesterkapitalismus im Fokus des Interesses. 1860 hatte er ein bilaterales Abkommen zwischen England und Frankreich geschlossen, bei dem erstmals in Europa Hunderte von Zöllen fielen, der sogenannte "Cobden-Vertrag". Autor der hochinteressanten Biographie ist John Morley (1838-1923), der Parlamentsmitglied und führender Wirtschaftsliberaler, der auch Zeitschriftenherausgeber und fruchtbarer Autor vor allem für Wirtschaftswissenschaften war und zum irischen Ministerpräsidenten avancierte. Vorsätze mit altem blindgeprägten Wappenexlibris, durchgehend sehr sauber und frisch, ausgezeichnetes, wundervoll gebundenes Exemplar.
