Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. 402 pages. Hardcover with a dust jacket. Large volume. Of the plethora of submachine guns developed in Germany before 1945, most if not all of which are covered herein, the most popular by far have been the M.P. 38 and MP d40 series, collectively known to all and sundry as "Schmeissers." The book begins with a brief history of the technological and strategical developments which led to the first "machine guns", and the adoption during WWI of Infiltration tactics as a means of surmounting the stagnation of trench warfare. The elite storm troopers who spearheaded these audacious forays into No Man's Land were soon clamoring for portable rapid-fire weaponry capable of effective and decisive close-range striking power and a new class of military small arm which had not previously existed was the result, beginning with the Italian Villar-Perosa. Several early German developments culminated in the adoption of the Bergmann M.P. 18,I in 1918. The new term "submachine gun", coined in America, soon came to denote any light, portable pistol-caliber automatic weapon of the type called a Maschinnenpistole in Germany. The vindictive Treaty of Versailles, which has been called the first step toward WWII, imposed severe restrictions on the Interwar German military. In spite of this, numerous new submachine guns were designed and produced in Germany and as the book shows, many of these were used alongside M.P.38s and MP40s right through WWII. The M.P.38 was adopted in 1938 and was superseded by a somewhat simpler version called the MP40 in 1940. The MP40 was manufactured in five variations by three firms - ERMA, Haenel, and Steyr - until 1944, when it was phased out in favor of the Italian Beretta SMG and the MP44. Much valuable material is also included from advanced European collections on original accessories and ancillaries, and the book concludes with an exhaustive Index. Language: eng Language: eng.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. 387 pages. Over 350 illustrations. Hardcover with a dust jacket. This is the most complete account of the history of the invention, development, manufacture, and use of the ArmaLite AR-10 Rifle ever published. The road to the U.S.-built AR-10 is followed faithfully and meticulously, with descriptions and numerous illustrations of all the 'AR'-numbered designs--such as the "para-sniper", a lightweight, .308 caliber bolt action spoiler fitted with a composite aluminum/stainless steel barrel and foam-filled fiberglass stock (the AR-1); a prospective survival rifle for the U.S. Air Force (the AR-5), and its civilian offshoot, the popular AR-7--through the series of one-off experimental prototypes that led to the 7.62mm NATO caliber ArmaLite AR-10B, a remarkable rifle in many ways. Further improvements and a new lease on life for the AR-10 in series production at the state-owned arsenal Artillerie-Inrichtingen in the The Netherlands followed, with the potential world market carved into sales territories for the several arms merchants eager and willing to promote it. The book describes and illustrates all the different "country" and other military models of the AR-10 "family", which included scoped AR-10 sniper rifles and magazine--and belt-fed light machine guns, as well as the experimental carbine and sporting (semi-auto-only) versions produced in Holland before program termination. Uniquely, this book continues with extensive, illustrated coverage of the successful use of the perfected NATO model of the AR-10 in combat, largely with Portuguese forces, under some of the harshest and most grueling conditions on the planet. In every instance the AR-10 acquitted itself with high honors, earning praise and devotion from its users. The modern-day rebirth of the 7.62mm AR-10 in several guises; the fate of surplus returns; and a look at the latter-day designs of ArmaLite Inc., are followed by a Bibliography and an extensive Index. Outstanding.

The rifle-caliber Browning was the most popular and most-used machine gun ever designed. The book discusses and illustrates in considerable detail the many variations on the basic recoil-operated Browning which were manufactured and/or used in over twenty countries, in both World Wars, in Korea and in Vietnam. Of particular interest is the focus on the aircraft Browning beginning in the Interwar years, in Britain and particularly in Belgium, where to keep pace with airspeeds of the best new fighters and pursuit aircraft Dieudonne Saive, John Browning's erstwhile chief assistant, twice increased the firing rate of the FN aircraft Browning, first in 1932 to 1,200 rpm and again in 1938 to 1,500 rpm. 340 pages. Hardcover with a dust jacket. INSCRIBED TO A COLLECTOR AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. The development of the M14 took place during the post-World War II-and-Korea period, which saw immense shifts in American Defense policy in the new Atomic age, and, concurrently, colossal power struggles within the hierarchy of the U.S. Defense Department. Shoulder rifle development was small potatoes indeed against such a backdrop, and it was treated as such. An internecine, niggardly and uncertain atmosphere thus dogged the path of the emerging M14 right from the beginning, proving to contain in the end powerful, deadly seeds of destruction and demise, not only for the lightweight Rifle Program, but for the very core of the 174 year-old U.S. Armory System, plus, ultimately the whole traditional Army Ordnance small arms development ad procurement structure itself. The M14 story is fraught with enigmas and great and multitudinous ironies; it is as well a model study of Modern Bigness and its inherent chaos of labyrinthine vertical, horizontal and territorial divivions In the face of every adversity, however, the fundamentals of John Garand's design of turnbolt rifles shine through, when properly appreciated, and the story ends after all on a note of telling vindication for the M14, albeit in a highly specialized role, as a fitting, fighting American work of art. The M14 story has thus to do with much more than just a piece of hardware, it concerns immense power, vaunting ambition and high drama. In all, it is a celebration of the American Way. Lont out of print. The Book is in Near Fine condition with only modest use. The Dust Jacket shows some light rubbing and edge wear. There is one short tear at the top front. Overall the Dust Jacket is about Very Good.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. Revised Expanded Edition, 691 pages. Hardcover with a dust jacket. A huge volume! Over 500 illustrations. The first edition of this classic work appeared in 2004, and went out of print rapidly. The author, a prizewinning military historian, has continued his research in the military archives of Germany and elsewhere and produced an expanded, revised edition, which contains the most complete and authoratative account ever published of the intermediate caliber assault rifle and the revolutionary 7.92x33mm Kurtz cartridge. It has been said that Adolph Hitler was the greatest general the Allies had during WWII, and several of his fatefully bungled tactical decisions are discussed. None was perhaps more significant than his refusal on three separate occasions to sanction the development and adoption of the intermediate caliber assault rifle as the general issue weapon of the Wehrmacht. Its acceptance and fielding proved to be a long, tortuous and never fully completed process and, as a measure of the complexity of the story, in all of German small arms history, no weapon was renamed so often within such a short period of time. The Sturmgewehr 44 (assault rifle 44) to give it its ultimate name, was belatedly approved by Hitler in October, 1944, after his earlier rejections had delayed the program for a full year, and by the time he changed his mind a general rearming was out of the question. Nevertheless, the Sturmgewehr was by far the most important and influential small arm and cartridge development of the war. Fully indexed. An outstanding and exhaustive study. Out of print and getting Scarce. The publisher is now out of business.
