Of the plethora of submachine guns developed in Germany before 1945, most if not all of which are covered herein, the most popular by far have been the M.P. 38 and MP d40 series, collectively known to all and sundry as "Schmeissers." The book begins with a brief history of the technological and strategical developments which led to the first "machine guns", and the adoption during WWI of Infiltration tactics as a means of surmounting the stagnation of trench warfare. The elite storm troopers who spearheaded these audacious forays into No Man's Land were soon clamoring for portable rapid-fire weaponry capable of effective and decisive close-range striking power and a new class of military small arm which had not previously existed was the result, beginning with the Italian Villar-Perosa. Several early German developments culminated in the adoption of the Bergmann M.P. 18,I in 1918. The new term "submachine gun", coined in America, soon came to denote any light, portable pistol-caliber automatic weapon of the type called a Maschinnenpistole in Germany. The vindictive Treaty of Versailles, which has been called the first step toward WWII, imposed severe restrictions on the Interwar German military. In spite of this, numerous new submachine guns were designed and produced in Germany and as the book shows, many of these were used alongside M.P.38s and MP40s right through WWII. The M.P.38 was adopted in 1938 and was superseded by a somewhat simpler version called the MP40 in 1940. The MP40 was manufactured in five variations by three firms - ERMA, Haenel, and Steyr - until 1944, when it was phased out in favor of the Italian Beretta SMG and the MP44. Much valuable material is also included from advanced European collections on original accessories and ancillaries, and the book concludes with an exhaustive Index. Language: eng Language: eng.

The development of the M14 took place during the post-World War II-and-Korea period, which saw immense shifts in American Defense policy in the new Atomic age, and, concurrently, colossal power struggles within the hierarchy of the U.S. Defense Department. Shoulder rifle development was small potatoes indeed against such a backdrop, and it was treated as such. An internecine, niggardly and uncertain atmosphere thus dogged the path of the emerging M14 right from the beginning, proving to contain in the end powerful, deadly seeds of destruction and demise, not only for the lightweight Rifle Program, but for the very core of the 174 year-old U.S. Armory System, plus, ultimately the whole traditional Army Ordnance small arms development ad procurement structure itself. The first edition of this classic work appeared in 2004, and went out of print rapidly. The author, a prizewinning military historian, has continued his research in the military archives of Germany and elsewhere and produced an expanded, revised edition, which contains the most complete and authoratative account ever published of the intermediate caliber assault rifle and the revolutionary 7.92x33mm Kurtz cartridge. It has been said that Adolph Hitler was the greatest general the Allies had during WWII, and several of his fatefully bungled tactical decisions are discussed. None was perhaps more significant than his refusal on three separate occasions to sanction the development and adoption of the intermediate caliber assault rifle as the general issue weapon of the Wehrmacht. Its acceptance and fielding proved to be a long, tortuous and never fully completed process and, as a measure of the complexity of the story, in all of German small arms history, no weapon was renamed so often within such a short period of time. The Sturmgewehr 44 (assault rifle 44) to give it its ultimate name, was belatedly approved by Hitler in October, 1944, after his earlier rejections had delayed the program for a full year, and by the time he changed his mind a general rearming was out of the question. Nevertheless, the Sturmgewehr was by far the most important and influential small arm and cartridge development of the war. Fully indexed. An outstanding and exhaustive study.
