An entertaining collection of "book-detective"essays, each taking as its starting point a book or document from the author's collection and recounting something of its history as gleaned from Uden's own researches. As illustrations , the first three chapters lead from a manuscript book kept by Vice-Admiral Sir James Hawkins Whitshed to the case of the marooned sailor, Robert Jeffrey; from a faded pocket-book to the thrilling escape of HM Frigate Juno in 1793; and from a Book of Homilies to a 400 year old curse. From the foreword by Tupper's grandson: "He was not quite the poet laureate that he would have liked to be, and that some would have made him, nor was he the futile foil of Laurence Housman's "Victoria Regina". We have had to wait until now to see him in true perspective. Mr Hudson, his first, and perhaps only, biographer, by dint of patient and thorough research, has shown us Martin Tupper as he was, and, at the same time, has made a notable contribution to the social history of the nineteenth century. It is not to be expected that this biography will call "Proverbial Philosophy" forth from the dusty recesses of Charing Cross Road and set it once more upon the bookshelves of the English-speaking world, for its religious idiom is of an age that is past. But I am deeply indebted to Mr Hudson for rescuing the name of Martin Tupper from obscurity and ignominy, and for introducing him to this generation as one who contributed in some measure to its heritage of faith and freedom." Covers badly dampstained and marked, contents Good.

Later authorities have echoed his judgement, calling Christina Rossetti the finest woman poet of the nineteenth century. There are no less than eleven of her poems in the New Oxford Book of English Verse, and her poem In the bleak mid-winter has, in its setting by Gustav Holst, become one of the best loved and most popular of English carols, known to thousands who have never heard of the Rossetti family or the Pre-Raphaelite movement. But in her brilliantly perceptive biography Mrs Battiscombe convinces us that the sadness characteristic of her poetry has causes deeper than any external troubles. In early adolescence Christina had a spiritual and emotional crisis from which she emerged transformed. It is only possible to guess at the causes of this crisis:. 'The tension between two nationalities, two cultures, two ways of thought can be very fruitful of results,' writes the author, 'though it will inevitably be the cause of much stress and suffering to the person concerned. From this tension genius can be born.'In this book a tragic story unwinds against a background of life in an immensely gifted and closely-knit family, and it is a story of unflagging interest and moving pathos." Slightly agetoned, otherwise Good.

Charles Whibley, his friend and follower, who had all the material and all the knowledge for a biography of Boswellian proportions, survived Henley by twenty-seven years. But he never wrote the biography. When he died in 1930 he left six stout bound volumes of Henley's letters in chronological order (with some tiresome divagations), and three chapters of the rough draft of a book. I have made the letters to Whibley the basis of my study. I have drawn on Whibley's own material. For the rest, there is much of Henley's life in his writings and in the journals which he edited." An ex-library copy with white ink letters on the spine, a gilt stamp on the front board, perforation stamps on the title-page and last leaf, stamps on the verso of the title-page and on the plates, a little rubbed.
