Neuware - This thesis is dedicated to the investigation and development of numerical methods for hyperbolic partial differential equations arising in continuum physics and contains several new theoretical and practical insights which have resulted in novel numerical algorithms that are provably stab…le and robust, presented here for the first time as a whole. After extending the theory of conservative discretisations using summation-by-parts operators and symmetric numerical fluxes, the application of these methods to nonlinear balance laws such as the shallow water equations and the Euler equations is studied. While it is not clear whether entropy stable schemes can be formulated in this way for the Euler equations and general summation-by-parts operators, it is possible to construct such schemes using classical summation-by-parts operators. Following again the idea to mimic properties of the continuous level discretely, several numerical methods are investigated and new ones are developed. Moreover, stability of fully discrete schemes using explicit Runge-Kutta methods is investigate. Finally, an underlying concept of the previous investigations is studied in detail. Since the entropy plays a crucial role in the theory of hyperbolic balance laws, it has been used as a design principle of numerical methods as described before. Extending these studies, variational principles for the entropy are investigated with respect to their applicability in numerical schemes.

Whatever the reason, missing data may occur in all areas of applied research. The inadequate handling of missing values may lead to biased results and incorrect inference. The standard statistical techniques for analyzing the data require complete cases without any missing observations. The deletion of the cases with missing information to obtain complete data will not only cause the loss of important information but can also affect inferences. Wicking, or imbibition, is a spontaneous penetration of liquid into porous media due to capillary forces. Due to the challenges of the…capillary transport of cryogenic liquids, the wicking of liquid nitrogen subjected to evaporation was of a special interest for this research. For that, a novel test facility was built to perform experiments in a one-species system under pre-defined non-isothermal conditions. Two one-dimensional macroscopic wicking models were proposed to evaluate the impact of the porous sample superheat, geometrical and structural characteristics as well as the impact of the vapor flow created due to evaporation. In the second part of this work, the capillary transport abilities of porous ceramic monoliths of anisotropic structure were studied. The polymer-derived ceramic samples fabricated with the freeze-casting method were characterized via vertical wicking tests. In the third part, the capillary transport properties of porous media and the wicking process were examined using the computational fluid dynamics software. The results of benchmark microscopic and macroscopic simulations may serve as a basis for further numerical investigations of fluid flow problems in porous media. 222 pp. Englisch.

Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde unter d…iesem Aspekt ein innovatives Konzept der Pumplichtzufuhr entwickelt und untersucht, welches auf einer Anordnung paralleler Quarzglaskantenwellenleiter beruht. Die gezielte Nutzung des Richtungskopplungseffekts von Pumpmodenfeldern innerhalb der passiven Kantenwellenleiter und der laseraktiven Glasfaser gewährleistet eine optische Anregung der Glasfaser über die Länge der passiven Strukturen hinaus. Das Konzept ist modular aufgebaut und erlaubt eine Leistungsskalierung des Faserlasers durch eine Erhöhung der Anzahl einzelner Kantenwellenleitermodule. Um die Beständigkeit optischer Systemkomponenten, wie bspw. der Glasfaserstirnfläche gegenüber hohen optischen Leistungen zu steigern, wurde ferner eine Technologie zur Erzeugung schmutzabweisender Glasoberflächen entwickelt. Auf Basis eines Plasmaätzprozesses erfolgte die selbstordnende Ausbildung einer spezifischen Nanostruktur auf dem Glas. Die gezielte Nutzung des Richtungskopplungseffekts von Pumpmodenfeldern innerhalb der passiven Kantenwellenleiter und der laseraktiven Glasfaser gewährleistet eine optische Anregung der Glasfaser über die Länge der passiven Strukturen hinaus. Das Konzept ist modular aufgebaut und erlaubt eine Leistungsskalierung des Faserlasers durch eine Erhöhung der Anzahl einzelner Kantenwellenleitermodule. Um die Beständigkeit optischer Systemkomponenten, wie bspw. der Glasfaserstirnfläche gegenüber hohen optischen Leistungen zu steigern, wurde ferner eine Technologie zur Erzeugung schmutzabweisender Glasoberflächen entwickelt. Auf Basis eines Plasmaätzprozesses erfolgte die selbstordnende Ausbildung einer spezifischen Nanostruktur auf dem Glas.
