Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar / Cover slightly rubbed, otherwise a good copy. - The series of six publications that you have in your hands is connected with the exhibition Ten Centuries of Architecture, taking place over seven months in 2001 at Prague Castle and other locations in the Czech Republic under the patronage of the President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel. Every exhibition comes to an end one day, but the contents of the books will remain a permanent guide for the architectural treasures of the past millennium. Yes, the millennium actually has passed. There are not many people who have gone from one millennium into another. We have that good fortune. -- Over all this time, people have been accompanied by one of their own creations-architecture. For some, an ordinary building craft; for others, a technological skill or art. One way or another, a creation shaping the environment, even the smallest place in the landscape, and thus, each one of us. -- The environment in which we live, which has an unconscious impact on us and which we consciously (sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse) temporarily transform. For this reason, we should learn to appreciate and understand the language of historical and contemporary architecture, its wider context, which often remains hidden, and protect it along with the landscape. -- Architecture, as one of the classical arts, did not arise independently; rather, it always reflected the intertwining of the spiritual values of the age, the development of society, technological and scientific progress, knowledge and experience, arts-and-crafts skills. We can read it as a comprehensive chronicle of a particular epoch. Looking back on the millennium, we find a multitude of fates of unique figures and of unknown, forgotten individuals. It is not only the story of building, but of our civilisation, human plans, longings, faith and ideals. -- The architectural development of the Czech Lands is connected with the cultural heritage of all of Europe. The old continent, independent of the borders of empires, kingdoms and states, stands-in spite of all the complexities and differences between the ancient pagan, antique, Christian and other traditions- on the social foundations of the classical humanist ideals of the culture of ancient antiquity; despite the multitude of other influences, it has never ceased to return to this foundation for inspiration. -- Considering the subject, the selection of buildings in the individual publications -- could not be exhaustive; their number reflects the duration of the given stylistic periods. The buildings are ordered according to the date they were made, that is, chronologically, in such a way as to emphasise and suggest the development of the individual building types connected with a given epoch and their most -- characteristic features. -- The editorial series of guidebooks of the format "for the hand and for the pocket" also indicates for all the entries which buildings are part of exhibition and which have been filmed for the television series.
