Their contributions ranged from the philosophy of conservation to the legal and spatial planning frameworks; case studies included the role of professional engineers, the conservation of sensitive townscapes and the interpretation of the urban areas of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. The conference papers published here provide a unique survey of the state of conservation in the historic environment of countries that border the North Sea."
