Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. Despite his pre-eminent role in the avant-garde movement in Spain and his considerable influence on the writers of the so-called Generation of 1927, Ramón Gómez de la Serna (1888-1963) has been largely neglected by critics of contemporary Spanish literature. Designed to commemorate the centenary of the writer's birth, this collection of essays examines a wide range of aspects of his life and works. It reconsiders both his relationship with the historical circumstances of pre-war Spain and the basic tenets of his literary style while at the same time opening up new avenues of critical inquiry. The volume also carries an extensive bibliography of critical works devoted to Gómez de la Serna since his death. Contributors: Lorraine Albert, Manuel Durán, Alan Hoyle, C. Brian Morris, Cesar Nicolas, Anthony Percival, Carolyn Richmond, Antonio Ruiz Salvador, Ignacio Soldevila-Durante, Victor Ouimette. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. Jorge Guillén (1893-1984) has long been recognized as the dean of modern Spanish poets and an ethical as well as creative influence both in and outside of his native Spain. This collection marks Guillen's special connection with McGill and the Montreal celebration of the poet's birth with essays that provide new perspectives on his life and work, an effort of reengagement with the previous criticism, and some provocative critical realignments. Guillén is presented as a major exponent of European high modernism and his relationships with particular masters and friends are reassessed. Particularly exciting are the "literary" readings of Guillén's voluminous, and still largely unpublished, correspondence in which the complex inter-textualities of autobiography and aesthetics are unravelled to allow for new period contextualizations. This is a record of the multifaceted "state of the question" in Guillén criticism and the incorporation of some subtle demonstrations of theoretically informed critical practice into that corpus. Contributors: Birute Ciplijauskaite, John C. Wilcox, Jose Barroso Castro, Dorothy Odartey-Wellington, Ignacio Soldevila, Juan Cano Ballesta, Howard T. Young, and Francisco Javier Díez de Revenga. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. From the standpoint assumed in Transitional Discourses, the subject is always an ideological construct, to be understood, in the case of early modern Spain, within the broader context of the transition from feudalism to capitalism. Produced at the intersection between "animist" and "substantialist" ideologies, the "beautiful soul" remains, in Spain, essentially a compromise formation. Swimming against the tide of contemporary postmodernism, Malcolm Read argues the need to resume the project of a truly materialist philosophy of language. Language is suffused with desire and sexuality, the site where identities and subjectivities are constructed. It is also locked into the cycle of production and circulation, subjected to the relentless pressures of commodification. Transitional Discourses explores these and related issues through a series of Baroque, Enlightenment and Romantic texts by, among others, Tirso de Molina, Baltasar Gracián, José Cadalso, Pedro de Montengón and Mariano Larra. Particular attention is paid to points of convergence with contemporary linguistic ideologies. Malcolm K. Read is a Professor in the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. If book and packaging weight exceeds 400gms, additional shipping charges may apply. Editor: José M. Ruano de la Haza; Nigel Dennis. New. Ottawa Hispanic Studies 21. 274 pp.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. Originally written twenty years ago as a doctoral dissertation directed by Alexander A. Parker, Premraj Halkhoree's Social and Literary Satire in the Comedies of Tirso de Molina, now newly edited and abridged, remains unsurpassed in detail and scope as the most painstaking analysis to which Tirso's dramatic craftsmanship has ever been submitted. The work is rich in thoughtful suggestions and acute insights and represents a substantial and original contribution to our understanding of Tirso's dramatic art and to our knowledge of Golden-Age drama. The following comedies are discussed in detail in this volume: Don Gil de las calzas verdes, La celosa de sí misma, El amor médico, Marta la piadosa, El melancólico, and Esto sí que es negociar, Amar por arte mayor, Mari-Hernández la gallega, and Antona García. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. This collection calls attention to some of the diversity of new approaches within Hispanism, reflecting a growing concern with gender, class, sexuality, and nationality. Sustaining these new developments and demonstrating their transformative effect, the collection contains several re-readings of canonic texts and also acknowledges the emergence of new voices and areas of study. The essays do not merely draw on current theories, but look to extend and refine theoretical discussion. By their preparedness to problematize how texts work and are read, these essays often demand an effort of reengagement with apparently familiar material; in so doing they underline the need for increased self-reflexivity. Among the texts and authors discussed are Lazarillo de Tormes, La vida es sueño, Los pazos de Ulloa, La Regenta, Dona Bárbara, Almodóvar's Matador, Garcilaso de la Vega, Pablo Neruda, and the 1898 Generation. Contributors: John Beverley, Lou Charnon-Deutsch, Ruth Anthony El Saffar, Jo Labanyi, Bernard J. McGuirk, Mark I. Millington, Henry W. Sullivan, Paul Julian Smith, and Noel Valis. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. This study of the recurrent symbol of the prison (jail cell, cayman jaws, labyrinth .) and the use of the myth of Theseus provides a new perspective on Buero Vallejo's theatre. In her reading of Buero's tragedies, Martha Halsey draws attention to the constant allusions to immurement, entrapment and impasse, but also argues that the symbol of the prison carries within it the idea of reversibility: prison walls imply an exit and the writer's purspose is to show his audience this exit. This dialectic of freedom is central to Buero's work since his tragic vision never excludes hope and the prospect of change. Professor Halsey examines the opposing sets of symbols that often establish the dialectical structure of Buero's plays and reflect his dynamic view of history. The writer emerges not only as the intransigent realist he is usually considered to be, but also as a visionary. This book offers an analysis of Buero's seven most recent plays: La Fundación, La detonación, Jueces en la noche, Caimán, Diálogo secreto, Lázaro en el laberinto and Música cercana. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. This new collection of essays on Tirso de Molina (1579-1648), perhaps the most experimental of the great Golden-Age dramatists, seeks to isolate the particularity of his theatrical genius within his own historical context, as well as to capture his special resonance for posterity. Some contributions stress Tirso's theatricality, regarding his works, not so much as archival "literature," but rather as poetic drama, play scripts out of which a living performance may be constructed. Other papers discuss such typically Tirsian themes as play-within-the-play, the mutability of identity, gender confusion, chaos, night scenes, the materiality of human life, as well as vindicating the Tirsian paternity of El burlador de Sevilla. Using a wide variety of critical approaches, the authors bring us a dramatist of enduring originality who formed an essential bridge between the pioneer creator of the Comedia, Lope de Vega, and the consummate craftsmanship of its perfecter, Calderón de la Barca. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. If book and packaging weight exceeds 400gms, additional shipping charges may apply. Editor: José M. Ruano de la Haza; Nigel Dennis. New. Paperback. Condizione: New. 1. ed. Excellent condition. As the most dynamic and revolutionary literary and artistic movement of the twentieth century, Surrealism has profoundly affected the visual arts, the cinema, and literature, especially poetry. The International Symposium on Surrealism and Spain held at UCLA in 1989, from which this volume derived, was designed to achieve a balanced view of the subject by assembling for the first time scholars who have studied the impact of that movement on Spanish writers, artists and film-makers. The result is this volume of fifteen essays, which offers the most comprehensive evaluation to date of a major influence of twentieth-century Spanish art and literature. Also included are twenty-five illustrations and an extensive bibliography. Contributors: Andrew A. Anderson, Adriana Bergero, Willard Bohn, Jacqueline Cruz, Nigel Dennis, Anthony Geist, Derek Harris, Patricio Hernández, Virginia Higginbotham, Kristine Ibsen, C.
