From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: It has been amply stressed that the novel was, right from the begin-ning, a popular and secular form of literature, profoundly rooted in a popular substratum. And the traditional view of literature inherited from Plato, which Christianity maintained alive, systematically rejected the novel as a valid form of artistic expression, making it take the last place in the hierarchy of literary genres. This traditional frame-work has rarely been challenged throughout the history of Western culture, so much so that critical appreciation of the genre has not been on a par with the attention that the reading public has always given to the novel. "The Renaissance in Scotland is a collection of original essays on a wide range of topics concerning the cultural history of Scotland. The period concerned extends from the late fifteenth through to the early seventeenth century. The individual studies take various aspects of culture as their starting-points: literature; the history of manuscripts and printed books; libraries; the law; the universities; music; education; social, political and ecclesiastical history. The essays, however, all take full account of the larger context provided by the age of humanism and reform, as this was manifested in Scotland. The Renaissance in Scotland contains an abundance of new information and offers many challenging new insights and interpretations. Binding is firm and sound. Pages are clean, bright, and unmarked. ABOUT THIS BOOK: This study of the life and milieu of a statesman, utilizing a wide array of hitherto unused chronicle and documentary material, offers new insights into many aspects of Ottoman eighteenth-century society. Subjects touched upon include career development and patronage in the central bureaucracy, increasing knowledge and interest in European diplomacy, and the impact of war on traditional attitudes. Of particular interest is the section on the 1768-74 Russo-Turkish War, a traumatic awakening for the Ottomans, who yielded significant territory, but were also faced with the necessity of reconstructing a polity and ideology which no longer produced results on the battlefield. Ahmed Resmi was the first of a new generation of statesmen who saw real virtue in the rationalization of war and the need for peace within prescribed borders. Gentle bumping to extremities, else bindings are firm, tight, and sound. Pages are clean and unmarked. A very presentable set, complete in two volumes, of this study of civil society in the Middle East, conducted by the Department of Politics and the Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at New York University. ABOUT THIS SET: While there is wide disagreement about the outcome among those who follow events in the Middle East, there is little doubt that the regimes in the region are under increasing pressure from their citizens. In rich and poor states alike, incipient movements of men and women are demanding a voice in politics. Recent political developments in Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon, even the future state of Palestine, clearly show the vitality and dynamism of civil society, the melange of associations, clubs, guilds, syndicates, federations, unions, parties and groups which provide a buffer between state and citizen and which are now so clearly at the forefront of political liberalization in the region. Civil Society in the Middle East, a two-volume set of papers providing an unusually detailed and rich assessment of contemporary politics within the Middle East, and in this sense alone, quite literally peerless, is the result of a project of the Department of Politics and the Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at New York University, and it contains original studies of Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, Tunisia, the West Bank and Gaza, as well as the prospects for democratization in the Arab world, the consequences of economic liberalization and contemporary Islamic thought on civil society and democracy. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The administration of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily has long been held up to be the most advanced government in twelfth-century Europe. However, until now there has been considerable confusion about how this bureaucracy actually functioned, whether it developed in the 12th century or retained the form given it by Roger II; whether it had regional variations, what the identity of different departments of government was, who did what within the structures of government, and what the relationship between the Greek, Arabic and Latin elements within the administration was. This work goes a long way to sorting out these problems. The author's meticulous work with chronicles and charters enable him to clear up many problems and mysteries in the administration of finance and justice and to identify such uncertainties as remain. This fundamental work forms a basic reference point for future studies of Norman Sicily and of government in the high Middle Ages. Series: The Medieval Mediterranean, Volume: 3. (Publisher).
