All the facts were obtained from original and first-hand sources and some of the most interesting events are documented. For example, in 1814 the Great Frost Fair was held on the river Thames. The author describes in detail the weather conditions which brought about this momentous occasion. There was an increase in the price of coal since London then depended on 'Coal from Newcastle,' and the freezing of her river cut off supplies completely. John Ashton also mentions the habit of wife-selling in 1815. An unusual practice to say the least and not particularly profitable! Impressions made by the famous on the general public provide fascinating reading and the political events of the time also arouse much interest.
