This full scale historical reconstruction of the Jesus of history pays attention to facts~stratified according to degrees of certainty~that suggest links between Jesus' own intentions, his death, and the rise of "the church". In the author's own words, "Jesus pushed ahead ( of John the Baptist) by initiating the gospel that the wicked would be included in the kingdom, a message which was accompanied by healings and exorcisms. The great symbolic acts of his life, however, show that he stayed within the general framework of Jewish restoration eschatology: he called 'twelve,' he expected a new or renewed temple, and perhaps he rode into Jerusalem on an ass. Finally, he symbolized the coming kingdom in a banquet shared with the 'twelve.' "He went to his death.
