Its point of departure is the role of printing as a vehicle for the transmission of knowledge, art, and humanist ideas. Geoffrey Dudley Hobson traces the emergence of the richly interlaced fanfare style in Paris during the later sixteenth century, its relationship to earlier French decorative binding, its influence on the seventeenth-century pointillé style, and its dissemination through French and Italian workshops. The second part of the work is devoted to the long-debated significance of the mysterious closed S, a decorative emblem appearing on numerous contemporary bindings and related works of art, examining its occurrence, possible interpretations, and association with particular binders and patrons.
