Condizione: new. Amsterdam : Gérard Th. van Heusden,1974. Reprint London 1966-edition. Orig. cloth binding. Dustjacket, [4],x,93 pp. With 32 reproductions & 8 folded plates. 29x22 cm. - In 1947 the learned antiquarian bookseller Ernst Philip Goldschmidt (1887-1954) was invited to America to lecture on 'The Spread of Renaissance by Means of the Book'. This work brings together the three lectures by Goldschmidt on the development of the printed book during the Renaissance. It was first printed in 1950 by Cambridge University Press in a limited edition, and reprinted with corrections in 1966. Its point of departure is the role of printing as a vehicle for the transmission of knowledge, art, and humanist ideas. Goldschmidt successively examines the development of typography, the evolution of book illustration, and the function of ornament as an integral component of book design. In doing so, he pays particular attention to the interaction between technical innovation, artistic design, and the dissemination of texts. Through numerous reproductions and folding plates, he illustrates the stylistic development of Renaissance books and the contributions of printers, typefounders, engravers, and publishers to European book culture. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. 4to (30.5 cm), front., XVI, 154, 18 pp, 37 plates. Publisher's cloth, red gilt-lettered label (minor shelf-wear). Second edition, enlarged with a supplement of additions and corrections by Anthony Hobson. A landmark study of French sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century decorative bookbinding, originally published by the Chiswick Press, London, in 1935, and long regarded as the standard work on the reliure à la fanfare and the enigmatic S fermé device. Geoffrey Dudley Hobson traces the emergence of the richly interlaced fanfare style in Paris during the later sixteenth century, its relationship to earlier French decorative binding, its influence on the seventeenth-century pointillé style, and its dissemination through French and Italian workshops. The second part of the work is devoted to the long-debated significance of the mysterious closed S, a decorative emblem appearing on numerous contemporary bindings and related works of art, examining its occurrence, possible interpretations, and association with particular binders and patrons. Anthony Hobson's supplement substantially expands the original census, adding 167 newly identified bindings to the 269 described in the first edition, together with revised attributions, corrections, and new documentary evidence reflecting advances in the study of Renaissance bookbinding during the intervening thirty-five years. The volume also includes a concordance of the revised plate arrangement with the pagination of the 1935 edition and reproduces thirty-seven plates, several in colour, illustrating notable examples of fanfare bindings, including bindings executed for Marguerite de Valois, Catherine de Médicis, and other distinguished patrons. A classic and indispensable reference for the study of French Renaissance bookbinding, of fundamental importance to collectors, librarians, and historians of the decorative arts.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 4to (31 cm), frontispiece, XVIII, 252 pp, 25 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. This scholarly study examines a distinctive group of Italian Renaissance bindings decorated with a plaquette depicting Apollo and Pegasus, which has attracted the attention of scholars and collectors since it was first identified in print by Thomas Frognall Dibdin in 1817. Anthony Hobson subjects the 144 recorded volumes associated with this group to close and systematic scrutiny, combining bibliographical, stylistic, and historical analysis. He convincingly demonstrates that the bindings belonged to a young owner whose identity had not previously been connected with them, thereby reshaping earlier assumptions about their provenance. The author explores in detail the circumstances and chronology of the library's formation, as well as the workshops and craftsmen responsible for producing the bindings. Further chapters address the relationship between binders and the book trade in sixteenth-century Italy and examine the selection of titles and editions in the collection, paying particular attention to the extent to which it reflects a discerning taste for fine printing. The final chapter traces the dispersal of the library, situating the collection within the broader history of Renaissance book collecting and survival.…
