Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,00, University of Göttingen (Seminar für Englische Philologie ), course: Multiethnic Britain, language: English, abstract: 1. Introduction1.1. Brief introduction to home and belonging as a general ideaHome has a significant function in our lives. Thinking of home we associate notions like shelter and comfort and when we come home we want to feel safe and welcome. John McLeod argues in this sense that ¿to be ¿at home¿ is to occupy a location where we are welcome, where we can be with people very much like ourselves.¿ We are looking for who we are, where we come from and try to find our place in life. When one is born in a country but moves to another where is one¿s home country then This question is hard to answer, because migration is always a process which implies a struggle of identities. When the 2nd generation is born in the host country- where do they belong if the host country does not accept them as full members The term home is highly complicated in a complex and multicultural world like ours.1.2. Procedure and approach of my analysesI have centered my term paper on an attempt to identify and characterize the concepts of home and belonging in postcolonial literature.Comparing how the idea of home and belonging is presented in the novels White Teeth by Zadie Smith and Small Island by Andrea Levy, I have tried a text- extrinsic approach. Furthermore, I have analysed the authors¿ intentions with regard to the time of publication and the time of the narrative. However, the main aspect of my analyses is which concepts of home and belonging exist and which of them can be found in the novels of my comparison. I have chosen White Teeth because it is a novel that deals with the colonial past and the postcolonial present and I have selected Small Island because it is a novel that deals with migration in the past. Small Island is set at the beginning of migration when many colonized people came to England. Andrea Levy presents different views, the White and Black British point of view at the beginning of migration. My motivation to compare both novels is to go back to the beginning of colonial migration and to show the difference between the concepts from the past to the present. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Romance Languages - Italian and Sardinian Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Palermo, language: Italian, abstract: La presente tesina riguarda l¿analisi di Roland Barthes (1915-1980) sulle teorie linguistiche dei segni di Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913).

Therein, Twain uses humor as an instrument to criticize the German language. Without its witty and diversified character the essay would be a provocative and mean accusation. I will support my thesis with the help of additional information about the author's biography and his first experiences with the German language. To explain my thesis and to understand the author's concerns it is important to draw these connections. Moreover, I will go into detail about the essay structure to illustrate its critical character and effect. The large amount of stylistic devices that make the essay particularly impressive and remarkable will be parsed and discussed in addition. Eventually, I will comment on the essay's impact on success and distinction. In doing so, the sustainability of this piece will be explained.

While Brecht displayed a great awareness of the need to continuously adapt his play in order to not only make it appropriate for the times, but also to maintain it appropriate in the light of changing times, different productions of the play have only done so with limited courage and success, leading to the sad result that what Life of Galileo once embodied is usually not entirely what it embodies now.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 16 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Environmental Policy, Wageningen University, language: English, abstract: The consequences of climate change to social, economical and environment are becoming the most concern issues of political, business and society leaders in both developed and developing countries. However, prediction of climate change impact becomes the concern among the scientists around the world. Uncertainties in climate prediction are the main obstacles for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The high level of uncertainties in climate changes prediction causes high risk in management action. The uncertainties can mean that the impact of climate change can be lower or higher than expected by scientists. The uncertainties derive from the range of socio-economic development scenarios, climate model projections, the downscaling of climate effects to local/regional scales, impacts assessments, and feedbacks from adaptation and mitigation activities. In addition, high level in uncertainties can increase the cost of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. Moreover, setting up the priorities for conservation and management of biodiversity is the challenge for all the countries in the world because climate change may happen rapidly than the current prediction. This is not meant that it is impossible to set up the priorities for conservation and management under the uncertain impact of climate change. This essay will look into the conservation and management measures of biodiversity under the climate variability due to uncertainties in prediction. Then it will highlight some practical examples from both developed and under developed countries.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 12 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 1,3, Växjö University, language: English, abstract: On the 13th of March 2008 the EU-Council in Brussels decided the formation of a Mediterranean Union, which shall deepen the relations to the south and east Mediterranean states. This Union shall intensify the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership launched in 1995 in Barcelona. The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership includes political and security dialogues, the gradual establishment of a free trade area and cultural relations under the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) of the EU. The bilateral and multilateral agreements are mentioning as well topics such as migration and asylum. These subjects are today more than ever important for EU member states. The EU is for many migrants the possibility to escape the bad living conditions in their home countries, which are to a huge degree countries of the south and east Mediterranean. Due to this problem, EU member states decided to manage legal and illegal immigration as well as the flow of refugees on the multilateral level of the EU. Since the Treaty of Amsterdam this area is located in the first pillar of the EU and not longer in the intergovernmental third pillar. As it can be seen in the bilateral and multilateral agreements of the EU with non-EU members there is definitively an EU foreign policy dimension of migration and asylum. Since migration is evidentially a timeless topic and the creation of a Mediterranean Union was decided currently, this paper will analyze the external dimension of illegal immigration in the relations with the Mediterranean partner countries. Which approach is the EU following regarding illegal immigration in general How far are the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership states included in the management of illegal immigration Which strategies include the agreements with these countries Where might be problems of the EU-management of illegal immigration in the cooperation with the countries of the Mediterranean These shall be the key-questions the paper will answer.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Communications - Media and Politics, Politic Communications, grade: 1,0, Stockholm University, language: English, abstract: 1 IntroductionThe process of Globalization and new communication technologies such as television and internet provide advanced opportunities for the mass media to report about conflict and war in any remote part of the world beyond national borders. The public opinion and people¿s perception of a conflict can be shaped by news coverage, in many cases imprinted by the relationship between the media and the political elite which is especially consistent in times of war (Hallin 1986, cited in Dimitrova and Strömbäck 2005: 406). If media coverage is reflecting the line of government officials, images related to war and conflict are biased. This construction of reality by the contemporary mass media is especially criticised, besides other critique, by so-called ¿corrective forms¿ of journalism (Cottle 2006: 100-119).The recently escalated conflict between the People¿s Republic of China and its autonomous region of Tibet is perceptible everywhere in the world and not only a national issue behind doors any more as contemporary mass media enhance a form of ¿global scrutiny¿ making violent and despotic behaviour of states visible for the world (J.B. Thompson 1994, cited in Stevenson 2003: 107). In fact, the tensions between China and Tibet is not a new phenomena but the riots bring the issue back into the public what proves the statement of Simon Cottle, that the mass media is rather reporting about violent conflicts and has little interest in processes of peaceful resolutions of conflicts (Cottle 2006: 100). The conflict is carried out in the media via ¿selective, framed communication¿ and voices stating their opinion on the conflict are raised everywhere in the world.[.]Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Such an approach should inform, obligate and mobilise. In order to reach out to all sections composing the school life that is, students, parents and all staff, and involve those into the approach a school wide policy is needed to proclaim the schools stand on the problem and provide principles and guidelines about how to address the problem. Rigby (2003) suggests that the policy should be ¿widely disseminated¿ (p. 28) in order to reach at best everyone involved with the school. Furthermore, parents who are not that fluent in speaking the English language should have access to translated versions of the policy (p. 28). This whole school approach, furthermore, has to be acted out on the group and individual level in order to fulfil its purpose. Teachers can use cooperative learning as a means to reduce bullying by building interpersonal relationships in everyday class. This approach to learning supports the idea of students working together on a shared task in small groups. In contrast to normal group work cooperative learning binds the members of a group together through the task solving process which can only be maintained as a team. This shared responsibility between the team members should be understood as ¿positive interdependence¿ (Gillies, 2003, p. 37). To continue the whole school approach on the individual level there are several options for teachers and staff. It should be the main aim to help victims as well as bullies. The ¿No-Blame Approach¿ suggested by Rigby and Thomas (2003) can be used to mediate between the two parties by interviewing them separately.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Modern communication technologies allow multinational companies to perform their marketing strategies on a global level, due to the possibility of executing cross-border transactions more and more efficiently in the short term. However in what way has the consequential development of growing together an effect on marketing relevant socio-cultural differences The following paragraphs treat first and foremost the significance of intercultural aspects for global and local marketing strategies. Gathering different point of views towards brand characters shows the interest of a non-categorized thinking concerning brand perception. The initial definitions ¿global¿- ¿local¿ brands are already suggestive of the ambiguous character of brands. Analyzing adaptation and standardizing branding strategies leads finally to the principal result of this work: reasoning that successful global branding always implies the creation of a strong brand personality.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

It identifies that this new standard is required due to mainly smaller, non-listed companies prevailing. These entities currently use diverse national accounting standards and thus are not comparable. However, because of SMEs¿ differing activities and stakeholders, existing IFRSs would not be appropriate so new standards are needed. The IFRSs for SMEs are based on initial, full IFRSs but were reduced, simplified and adjusted to reduce the reporting burden that many small companies would suffer. All companies addressed are not publicly accountable, provide general purpose statements and approximately contain 50 employees. Which firms in detail will apply to these new standards is finalised by national jurisdictions. Nonetheless, there can be found some disadvantages. E.g. immense simplifications can result in insufficiently explained standards that can hardly be employed adequately.Furthermore, four accounting events are revealed: goodwill impairment, cost method for associates, finance leases and research and development expenditures. All these show up differences compared to full IFRSs. The preparation of financial reports is facilitated and user interests are taken into consideration. However, alternatives can be suggested that perhaps are more appropriate for SMEs.Finally, it is concluded that the IFRS for SMEs are well developed including advantageous adjustments that try to satisfy SMEs¿ as well as their reports users¿ needs. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Marburg (Institut für Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: In the preface to Uncle Tom's Cabin Harriet Beecher Stowe explained the purpose of her antislavery novel. She wanted 'to awaken sympathy and feeling for the African race [.]' (xiii). Stowe is more precise in her preface to A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin where she defines her goal of writing 'to bring this subject of slavery, as a moral and religious question, before the minds of all those who profess to be followers of Christ in this country' (Stowe qtd. in Nuernberg 44). Stowe was successful and her sentimental novel reached the hearts of millions of readers and brought '[.] grown men to their emotional knees' (Yarborough 62). The novel did not only touch of the heart of the readers, it had as well political effects which can be underlined by the fact that Abraham Lincoln claimed that Stowe had caused the Civil War. This is one of the reasons why Josephine Donovan describes Uncle Tom's Cabin as 'probably the most influential novel ever written' (Donovan 11).This paper will deal with another level of the novel's influence. In the Longman Dictionary the term 'Uncle Tom' is defined as 'a black person who is too respectful to white person'. This definition is an evidence for the fact that Uncle Tom 'entered the stock of American cultural archetypes' (Yarborough 53). The label 'Uncle Tom' has even become 'an index for racial degradation' (Railton 104). This paper focuses on the contradiction between Stowe's antislavery conviction and 'her tendency to see characters as representatives types' (Donovan 49) of different races. 40 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Department for English and American Studies), course: Historical Linguistics and Medieval English Studies, language: English, abstract: Much time and ink has been spent on the study of the so called Beowulf manuscript which nowadays constitutes the presumably ¿most discussed¿ (LUCAS 1990: 363) Old English manuscript. Contained in this manuscript is the apocryphal Letter of Alexander to Aristotle that will be central to this paper. The multitude of medieval manuscripts (cf. GUNDERSON 1980: 48) of the Letter leave little doubt that it certainly belongs to some of the ¿most successful literary impostures of the medieval ages¿ (RYPINS 1971: xliii). However, its Anglo-Saxon version ¿has excited little attention over the years¿ (ORCHARD 1995: 116).Scholar's interest seems to have been much more with the study of the earlier Latin form of the manuscript (RYPINS 1971: xxx): the Epistola Alexandri ad Aristotelem, which seems to derive from an older Greek version (cf. GUNDERSON 1980: 48). The version of the Letter dealt with here is a copy of an earlier (and apparently lost) Old English translation of the Latin Epistola: Thus ¿it is at least twice removed from the Latin¿ (Rypins xxxvii). It is my purpose to show within this paper that neither the various monstrous beings (vs. SISAM 1962: 96) nor their ¿aggression as a particular problem for foreign rulers¿ (vs. POWELL 2006: 1) that are most commonly said to be the connecting theme of the 'community of manuscripts' of the Norwell Codex are the central aspects of the Letter.Until further studies prove me wrong, we may assume that the Anglo-Saxon scribe consciously altered the Latin Epistola in a way as to ply the reader's attention to the biblical view on Alexander. He did so by opting for biblical phrasings rather than those found in the Epistola. Thus the Letter stresses that Alexander indeed is an paradigm of superbia, as ORCHARD suggests (1995: 135): an eordcyning 'earthly king',who does not accept his limits and rather than being content with his glory (cf. II Regum 14:104) provokes malum. This interpretation perfectly harmonizes withPOWELL's suggestion that ¿Wonders [.], the Letter [.], and Beowulf form an ideal core for a collection focused on rulership¿ (POWELL 2006: 15).Beginning with a rather short introduction to the Norwell Codex and the discussion concerning its thematic unity (ch. 2) I shall focus my attention to the Christian dimension of the Letter (ch. 3). Countering SISAM (1962:88) I shall argue that the Letter indeed serves a moralizing function.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

The horror!¿¿ ¿¿Horrible, horrible!¿¿Although the novels are different in style and plot, Joseph Conrad¿s Heart of Darkness and The Secret Agent have one thing in common: They are full of different kinds of ¿horror¿ and ¿madness¿. But what are all these different kinds of horror Why does Conrad use this word this often Is the horror in the Heart of Darkness the same as in The Secret Agent In this paper, I will try to analyse some of the horrible aspects Conrad mentions in his texts. The first chapter will have a closer look at Kurtz¿s famous phrase ¿¿The horror! The horror!¿¿. I will give insight in some of my own interpretations of what could be meant with this horror. The second part of this paper will investigate the horrors and fears of the three main characters in The Secret Agent: Stevie, Winnie Verloc and Mr Verloc. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Institut für fremdsprachliche Philologien), course: Core Pragmatics, language: English, abstract: As efficient communication plays a crucial, far-ranging role in our everyday life, it is highly interesting to examine how we transport the information we want to communicate. Yet, in contrast to what efficient might implicate, the actual language use is rather characterized by ¿indirectness and the flouting of Gricean maxims¿ (Blum-Kulka 1998: 50), than by clear and direct expressions. One of the main reasons for this process lies within the concept of politeness: Since, roughly speaking, the more indirect a request is being articulated, the more polite it will be considered. Thus, this paper aims to contemplate the aspect of politeness in interactions, as it greatly influences the choice of speech. Therefore, I will make use of Brown and Levinson¿s notion of politeness and present their concept in theory before I will continue by questioning the practicability and universality of this model.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Department of English and American Studies), language: English, abstract: Every year thousands of people from all over the world migrate to the United States of America. For most people escaping war, poverty, ecological destruction and other dangers, the United States constitute a safe harbor where their hopes of a better life come true. Ever since the settling of what is today the US, people came to live in the New World and to lead a better life than in their countries of origin. The hopes connected with this better and happier live are all joined in the concept of the ¿American Dream¿, which became one of most powerful creation myths of a country.People migrating to the United States have certain dreams or hopes of a better life but in reality these promises often turn out to be not as strong as people originally believed them to be. Only a very small amount of people achieve the famous idea of ¿rising from rags to riches¿ whereas many people fail to attain their goal of a better life. Hence it is not surprising that the American culture not only is shaped by the glorious American Dream but also by the grim truth of its failing or being flunked.Of course, such an important concept deeply influences American culture. Continuously the ideas of the American Dream can be found in television, movies, literature, and arts for instance in F. Scott Fitzgerald¿s The Great Gatsby or Gabriele Muccinös film The Pursuit of Happiness. This paper aims to examine the presentment and importance of the American Dream for twentieth century American drama. Drama in general was selected because of its importance as one of the three main literary genres. Temporal narrowing in form of 20th century was chosen because drama as a literary genre is characterized by experimentation with form and content in this period. Furthermore, some of the best known 20th century American dramas employ the American Dream as a central theme, for example Susan Glaspell¿s Trifles (1916), Arthur Miller¿s Death of a Salesman (1949), Lorraine Hansberry¿s A Raisin in the Sun (1959) and Edward Albee successive plays The Sandbox (1959) and The American Dream (1960).At first, a closer look is taken at what the American Dream actually is. Afterwards some constituents of the overall American Dream are distinguished and their prominence in some of most popularly known dramas of twentieth century American literature is extracted.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 44 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionWhile reading the title of Rushdie¿s short story cycle East, West a very important question arises in the reader¿s mind: does Rushdie use the comma in between the title to show the binary division of the Orient and Occident or does he want to make a bridge between East and West (Homeless Is Where the Art Is 162) However, after in depth research on this book, it becomes clear that Rushdie goes even further than this bridging device. He not only tries to connect or mediate both the East and West, but as a traveller and migrant himself, he pokes fun at the traditional notions of Orient and Occident, employing a vast range of styles, genres, structures and techniques, finally deconstructing the binary division between East and West.In doing so, he subverts the reader¿s traditional assumptions about the Orient and Occident and clarifies that, in today¿s reality; the East and West cannot be described in such a simplistic way anymore. In Imaginary Homelands, Rushdie writes that ¿literature is, of all the arts, the one best suited to challenging absolutes of all kinds¿ (Beck: 356) this is precisely what happens in his short story cycle East, West. Nothing is ¿sacred¿ any longer, hence most of the stories in East, West can be regarded as examinations to provoke and deconstruct the inviolable of Eastern and Western culture (Beck 360).To summarise, Rushdie mocks absolutist concepts of the oriental and occidental systems. By criticizing and deconstructing traditional notions he points out that, within the global village, the East and West are closely interrelated and cannot be regarded as opposites. Rushdie goes far beyond the familiar row about the binary division of the Orient and Occident.Although the short stories in East, West on the one hand embrace this deconstructive design and on the other depict the abundance and manifoldness of human existence in the Orient and Occident, they do not provide easy interpretations. This term paper attempts to determine the way Rushdie criticizes and deconstructs the traditional concepts and prejudices regarding the Orient and Occident and the way in which he disassembles these false images. The thesis that Rushdie deconstructs the binary division between the East and the West and displays the world as an intricate, interrelated system will be the main focus of this paper. Two stories from the East part of his short story cycle East, West; Good Advice Is Rarer than Rubies, The Prophet¿s Hair one.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Wells had been intrigued by speculations about the future progress of humanity towards a more equal society since his youth. (RUDDICK, 2007: 198) Studying at the Normal School of Science he came into contact with the mind-set of Thomas Henry Huxley who militated against the Social Darwinist thoughts which used evolutionary theories and were present in the late-Victorian society at the end of the 19th century. Huxley became an adored men-tor and friend for Wells who transferred and enhanced his ideas in his literature. (JANSING, 1977: 54)The scientific romance The Time Machine, which was Wells¿s first novel (GLENDENING, 2007: 7), explores the adventures of a respectable late-Victorian scientist within this evolutionary and Social Darwinist context. The scientist travels with his own created time machine into the year 802,701 where he finds the world of Eloi and Morlocks. These two species represent a degen-erated form of man whose retrogression results from socio-economic condi-tions. An additional journey 30 million years forward in time adds to the image of degeneration in the evolutionary process. This research paper concentrates on the evolutionary and Social Darwinist theme of The Time Machine. First, an introduction to Social Darwinist thoughts in the end of the 19th century is given in order to set the context for this scien-tific romance. Secondly, the cognition process of the Time Traveller is analysed as this will make clear Wells¿s examination with the social theories of his time. Studying selected symbols and images finally shows a detailed insight into the evolutionary subject of The Time Machine.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.
