The basic set-up in the predictive regression framework associates the noisy explained variable with the lagged persistent regressor, which can be characterized as a process close to the unit root process. In my work I describe the relevance and implications of an adoption of the linear predictive regressions in forecasting the volatile stock return using the lagged variable, dividend-price ratio, which is highly persistent. Subsequently, I aim to answer questions whether the excess stock returns are predictable using dividend yields and whether the predictability is stable over time. The analysis I conduct, based on financial data, aim to detect the hypothetical presence of structural breaks in the model. In order to search for the structural instability of coefficients I construct a Wald test for each possible structural break location and investigate the accuracy of the SupWald statistic and its tabulated critical values in the framework described. Having obtained the test statistic for each of the possible break-points, I describe predictive power of explanatory variable and provide economic rationale to support some of the statistical outcomes.…

Bis auf zwei deutsche Kinder sind nur türkische Jugendliche oder Jugendliche türkischer Abstammung dort versammelt. Die Jugendlichen sind zwischen 11 und 18 Jahren. Es dominieren eindeutig die Jungen. An zwei Tagen beschloss ich, meinen Bekannten dorthin zu begleiten, damit ich mir schon ein Bild machen, und manche der Jugendlichen vielleicht schon einmal kennen lernen könnte. Da jeden Tag unterschiedliche Jugendliche dort vorbeikommen, traf ich an beiden Tagen auf fremde Gesichter. Die jüngeren unter den Jugendlichen waren neugierig und fragten mich, was ich dort machte. Ich konnte mich mit ihnen unterhalten und sie ein wenig kennen lernen. Die Älteren unter ihnen hingegen bildeten eine geschlossene Gruppe, in die man als Fremder nicht eingelassen wurde. Mein ursprünglicher Ansatzpunkt bezüglich der Untersuchung des Codeswitching und Codemixing war, dass ich ein Interview mit einigen Jugendlichen machen wollte. Ich wollte insbesondere mehr über den bewussten oder unbewussten Einsatz des Mischens erfahren. Ich wollte jeweils zwei oder drei Jugendliche in einem Interview beisammen sitzen lassen und mit ihnen das Gespräch führen. So hoffte ich, dass sie sich während meiner Fragen womöglich untereinander unterhielten, Witze machten und in dieser Unterhaltung zwischen den Sprachen alternierten. In Polen befanden sich die meisten Ghettos und alle sechs nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungslager. Wenngleich die Wahnsinnsidee einer industriellen Vernichtung der europäischen Juden an anderen Orten geplant und vorbereitet wurde, so fand sie hier ihre praktische Vollendung. Die größte Opfergruppe unter den Juden stellen die polnischen Juden dar, sie wurden fast zur Gänze (90%) ausgelöscht. Einer internationalen Vereinbarung nach erfolgte die juristische Verfolgung der Täter, die als Lagerpersonal oder in der Okkupationsverwaltung unmittelbar für die Deportation und Vernichtung verantwortlich waren, durch die Volksrepublik Polen. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass die Nationalsozialisten in Polen, im Gegensatz zu Deutschland und Österreich, auch in der katholischen Bevölkerung massenhaft mordeten, fehlte im polnischen Justizwesen ein Verständnis für die Einmaligkeit der Shoah. Aus der Sicht der polnischen Gerichte waren die Verbrechen mit aller Härte der neu geschaffenen Paragraphen zu bestrafen (und tatsächlich fielen die Urteile schärfer aus als im Westen), aber die Massenmorde an den polnischen und europäischen Juden waren eben nur ein Teil der Besatzungsverbrechen und ihnen wurde keine historische oder juristische Besonderheit zugemessen. Obwohl in den ersten Jahren nach dem Krieg sogar eine eigene Behörde (Centralna ydowska Komisja Historyczna - Zentrale jüdische historische Kommission) geschaffen wurde, die von Juden geleitet war und sich mit der Untersuchung und Dokumentation der Verbrechen beschäftigte, ebbte ab 1950 das Interesse an der Shoah drastisch ab. Dennoch haben viele Eltern keine deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit. In vielen Elternhäusern wird fehlerhaftes Deutsch gesprochen. Etwa die Hälfte der Kinder in der Klasse wachsen zweisprachig auf. Besonders auffällige Sprachschwierigkeiten hat in dieser Klasse jedoch keiner. Lediglich K. verfügt über einen sehr geringen Wortschatz und eher unzureichende Grammatikkenntnisse.Bezüglich des Sozialverhaltens lässt sich sagen, dass es in dieser Klasse eine gute Klassengemeinschaft gibt. Die Kinder wissen um die jeweiligen Stärken und Schwächen ihrer Mitschüler. Wenn Kinder mit der Arbeit fertig sind, fragen sie oft, ob sie anderen helfen können. So kann ich die leistungsstarken Schüler als 'Hilfe' miteinbeziehen. Mit der Zeit lernen sie, wie man anderen wirklich hilft, ohne gleich alles vorzusagen. Eine kleine Schwierigkeit in der Klasse ist jedoch, dass sich bestimmte Kinder schon länger kennen und zu kleinen Gruppen zusammengeschlossen haben. Diese nehmen sich oftmals gegenseitig dran, sodass sich die anderen Kinder in solchen Phasen teilweise ausgegrenzt oder ungerecht behandelt fühlen. Sie sind es inzwischen gewohnt frei zu arbeiten. Tafel- und Werkstattpläne sowie Werkstattarbeit sind ihnen vertraut. Die meisten Kinder sind daher gut in der Lage sich zu konzentrieren und ruhig zu arbeiten. Dennoch gibt es auch hier in Bezug auf Motivation, Arbeitstempo und Selbstständigkeit große Unterschiede. P., U., J. und K. brauchen in solchen Phasen oft noch Hilfe, da sie es aus eigenem Antrieb nicht schaffen mit der Arbeit zu beginnen. This essay argues that such an overall judgement might be appropriate if it is meant to reflect the long-term adaptability of realist thought - although some qualifications have to be made as to what rival theory has achieved what degree of relative success in questioning realism's intellectual hegemony.First, it is striking to note how many elements of the rationalist/positivist epistemology embodied by neorealism have found their way into neoliberal as well as constructivist theories of international politics. The adequacy of realism's classical formula - international relations is about states pursuing interests defined in terms of power - has been doubted by advocates of interdependency and globalisation. But in the long run, even those accounts seem to have been absorbed by the dominant 'neo-neo consensus'. It would certainly be difficult to deny the fact that state preferences and military power continue to be crucial variables in international politics, regardless of the question whether they articulate themselves through direct inter-state relations or in more complex forms of multi-level bargaining.Second, the ongoing empirical relevance of (neo)realist thought is reflected by the huge influence of state-centric and security-oriented reasoning as it is routinely applied by major policy consultants and think tanks, especially in the US. As a result, it might be safe to say that many policymakers still base their judgements on a worldview that is essentially realist in nature.In sum, the basic ideas advanced by the realist paradigm have proved to be astonishingly stable. To demonstrate this, I will carry out a brief analysis of the main substantive and methodological criticisms of realist theory, using the conventional notion of three post-war 'debates' in IR. My conclusion will be that none of the rival approaches has been decisively successful in challenging realism's fundamental claims on a broad basis.
