Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.

84 pp. Deutsch. …

The transformation from a planned to a market-economic system has lead to the opening of previously closed markets. Since 1989 this region is not only a new market to sell to, but also a place to produce. And especially western-European enterprises might benefit from this due to short distances, which help to integrate these locations into a worldwide firm-strategy. European companies now have got the same possibilities like the US or even Japan to produce cheaper directly at their doorstep. However, the integration of ECE does not simply mean the extension of western markets to an eastern location. There is much more such as the complete restructuring of western production chains. Or in other words, there is a dual process of transformation (east) and structural change (west). This report focuses on Poland and its foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows since 1989. In order to evaluate the importance of FDI for Poland, three guideline questions are asked: (1) Why do companies invest in general in foreign areas (2) Why received this specific country capital from international investors And (3) finally, to what extent and in which sectors have foreign investors invested Therefore, a core model in economics was used to solve these questions: the concept of ownership-, location- and internalisation-specific advantages. One does not know what future might bring. But for sure Poland has tried to find its position within a new world order. After centuries of dependence, this county now seems to be willing to search for a bright future. Therefore FDI are seen to help to stabilize and to develop that country. And even the short period of time since 1989 might underline this, too. 24 pp. Englisch. …

Nowadays however, some argue this supports not the reality, and so academic research progressed. For this, laureate Kahneman et al developed the prospect theory which is assumed to describe people's economical behaviour better than traditional theories. Therefore the essay elaborates on the concept of behavioural finance and econom-ics as well as it checks, whether the homo economicus has mutated to this. How-ever, although there is criticism, the hypothesis is humans are bounded rational and therefore only conditioned able to be described as homo economicus. To gain insight, a brief introduction on theory, homo economicus and recent ob-servations of efficiency in human action and rationality is given. Later the concept of behavioural finance and economics is brought in and findings in human behav-iour are discussed together with examples from heuristics, economical framing and anomalies. In recent years, however, this view has changed since the pollution of the sea became an ever serious problem. Fairly cleaned liquids as well as various waste-pieces have massive implications on the maritime life. In addition, intentionally discharged as well as accidentally released oil-products propose a huge challenge to the global community. Therefore the essay elaborates on this ecological issue with focus on oil-tankers as well as it lists up international actions taken against it. These are regime-induced (MARPOL 73/78) modifications at the ships itself such as load on top, segregated and protectively located ballast tanks, crude-oil-washing and double-hulls. The hypothesis of the paper is that the international measures taken have been adequate in general and changed the discharging habits of the industry lastingly. The agreements also seem to have made it possible to have the oceans nowadays less polluted than it assumably would have been without them. Therefore, apart from minor potential future corrections, the international regime for protecting the oceans against the pollution from oil-tankers was rather successful. 40 pp. Englisch.…

They were massively funded and specifically equipped to fulfill their tasks for the best possible outcome. But over the last decades civilian, mostly non-governmental, actors did show up for nation-building as well. These organizations eventually demanded the right to participate - and than had to deal with urgent reconstruction issues as well. For this the question is how these - civilians and military personnel - work and win 'wars' together when they have to. Based on Afghanistan, the pa-per points on the ever more used concept of civil-military cooperation from the perspective of the military. To gain insight, four different approaches (UN, NATO, US, Germany) are de-scribed and explained. The context of the paper is formed by background-information on the current missions in Af-ghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom and International Security Assistance Force. And to get an impression of the cooperation, the paper overlooks the successful Provincial Recon-struction Teams. The hypothesis of the paper is that successful civil-military cooperation is assumed to be a vital part in the stabilization-process in Afghanistan. This is due to the broad meaning that the different deployed actors put onto it. And, especially the featured military forces / bodies have changed within the last decade. 32 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Project Report from the year 2007 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, University of North Florida, language: English, abstract: Since the early 1950s, the East German leadership rejected the Anglo-American imperialist mass culture including its musical influences (Kirchenwitz 7). Western pop culture was seen as class enemy. Institutions monitored youth groups who met to listen to rock music and drank a lot of alcohol; this way of life was regarded as 'decadent' and not exemplary. The majority of people rejected such teenage behavior since it offended values such as decency, order and tidiness (Maase 12-3). The problem of the youth was not necessarily the Nazi past of their parents, but the continuous dogmatism of parents, teachers and the ruling party in East Germany, the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). This supported the development of a cultural milieu, which was against the ordinary beliefs of the political elite (Kirchenwitz 6). The following paper will cover these emerging subcultures during the 1970s in connection with musical influences coming from the West. It will identify popular East German bands and explain the conflict between youth interest and public claims. Furthermore, the essay will describe the overall setting of the German Democratic Republic in order to increase the value of comprehension and understanding in today's totally different world and time. 16 pp. Englisch.…

It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the modern society processes like aging of population, rise of unemployment, declining financial resources and their pressure over the welfare system structure. The rapid economic and demographic changes after the Second World War are having a serious effect on the social policy system of Britain. In recent years there has been an increasing interest among social scientists in the examining and restructuring the welfare state system, particularly after the conservative welfare state reforms of the 80's. The issue of welfare retrenchment has been a controversial and much disputed subject within the field of social policy. This paper will focus on the question if further welfare state retrenchment is likely in the UK, critically examining the politics of the National Health Service and the Politics concerning Disabled People. The first section of this paper will concentrate on the status of the welfare system in the state and the main sources of influence for successful retrenchment policies. It will than go on to the particular policy field of the Health services in the UK and outline its specific position in the British welfare system. Finally, the essay will describe the special features in the Disabled Politics in Britain and discuss if further welfare retrenchment in this area is expectable. 16 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: USA, grade: A, University of Otago (New Zealand - University of Otago), language: English, abstract: The traumatic experience of World War II led to an international consensus on the need of a universal framework protecting the rights of each individual and the integrity of communities. The United States having been largely isolationist before the War entered the World stage and took a substantial part in the formulation of human rights. Against the background of the Cold War the institutionalization of a common framework was everything but easy. In retrospect it seems that the American commitment to human rights is ambivalent. On the one hand American rhetoric constantly uses human rights as a legitimating moral claim, on the other hand it stays in its exceptionalist tradition and sees itself not to be in need of any international supervision. To understand the gap between ideal and reality, the concept of American exceptionalism needs to be examined. How does this conception affect the political culture in the USA and how can we explain this sense of superiority Another question will be the legitimacy of this belief and the rationale that drives policy makers to perpetuate this notion. To evaluate the commitment to human rights in foreign policy, it will be necessary to have a look at the different administrations and their attitude toward human rights. They all face institutional constraints in policy decision making so that even if there is a 'real' commitment to human rights, it is not enough that the president himself endorses such a framework. Similarly, there are other national interests that can trump moral considerations which was especially evident during the Cold War. Special events and public opinions as well as ideological beliefs of the main actors strongly influence the place of human rights in the hierarchy of preferences. Even though good intentions can be identified in some administrations, the commitment to human rights in US foreign policy remains rather marginal and serves merely as a legitimating rhetoric. This affect not only the credibility of the United States itself but the validity of the whole concept of universal human rights. 20 pp. Englisch.…

Ideologically guided canon of femininity - 'a Soviet super-woman' as 'a working mother' - has lost its actuality; in the 1990s it was changed by new life standards, behaviour models, values and moral norms. At once the nationalist movements appeared on the scene and demanded to design and maintain national identity with articulation of basic concepts of nationality. In Ukraine this process was socially defined through the modern reconstruction of patriarchy supported by the educational system, mass media, political discourse, and legislation. Having recognised Ukrainian as the official language, Ukraine began moulding ideology constructed on the conception of the pre- Revolutionary Ukraine. The entangled images of the Cossack republic and the image of Ukraine as Mother, together with vital revival of Orthodoxy, strengthened patriarchy in politics, social order and cultural structures of the modern Ukrainian society. However through economical crisis and society instability, the image of Mother-Protector correlated with the historical past and traditional culture of the Ukrainians was shifted from its key position by unfamiliar before, but rather appealing 'Western models of femininity'. In this paper we try to find out how all these images of femininity were created, maintained and transformed through the recent years. 20 pp. Englisch. …

Globalisation is a catch-all term, that nowadays seems to be relevant to every field of social science. It affects every part of the world and of our every day lives. This is not to say that the locality of our lives does not play a role in how we experience the globalising forces. Rather it leads us to analyse what globalisation exactly is, how it has been conceptualised in the academic debate and how it changes conditions for every one of us. This paper will firstly address the general question of globalisation, outlining the controversy and the different approaches to developments that are subsumed under the term globalisation. To assess in how far people on the ground, in this case workers, are active agents, it is important to consider what changes globalisation brings about for their specific environment, in this case the international labour market. Finally, it should be shown that globalisation is not an independent force that dominates us all, but one that is actively created by humanity and in which every one of us takes a little part to a certain extent. 20 pp. Englisch.…

The main questions are: How - and most of all why- did democracy develop at this time and at this place How was this political systemorganised And what lessons can we draw from the rise and fall of the Athenian democracy In the following, I am going to touch some of these issues while analysing what the basicideas of Athenian democracy looked like, comparing the ancient with the modernunderstanding and investigating to what extent they might be relevant to current theories ofdemocracy. Thus, I am going to concentrate more on the abstract, intellectual foundations ofthe political system than on concrete manifestations like institutions and procedures. Frommy point of view, this approach appears to be more advantageous anyway because the formalframe could only be applied much harder to modern states than general ideas might be.As the basic ideas which led to the genesis and shaped the form of democracy may beconsidered the power of the people (commonly known as the rule of the people but I amgoing to show why this is not the appropriate translation), equality, liberty and the rule oflaw. After having examined the nature and consequences of these concepts, I am going tosummarise my results. 16 pp. Englisch. …

Through development strategies like the Green Revolution, the US manage to boost its own economy while pretending to have only altruistic and benevolent intentions. Some call Simon 'Broadway's most successful playwright' , others 'in commercial terms, the most successful dramatist in the American theatre, and probably in the history of the world'. Fact is, he has had dozens of plays produced and 'has been showered with more Academy and Tony nominations than any other writer'. Born on July 4, 1927, Marvin Neil Simon grew up in Manhattan and shortly attended New York University and the University of Denver. His most significant job came in the early 1950s when he started writing for television comedy series. By the 1960s, Simon had begun to concentrate on writing plays for Broadway. His first hit was 'Come Blow Your Horn' in 1961. Throughout his career, Simon 'has drawn extensively on his own life and experience for materials for his plays'. The author's 'milieu is middle-aged, middle class New York [, neighborhoods he knows well from when he was a child], and he builds much of his humor on the familiarity of that world to his audience'. But Simon is probably best known for his characters Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar from his 1965 playwright 'The Odd Couple'. 'Neil Simon's fabulously funny creation The Odd Couple started out in 1965 as a Broadway play, became a movie in 1968 and then was adapted for TV by ABC in 1970, remaining on screen for five years and more than a hundred episodes' , as well as used for other derivative works and spin-offs. In his plays, above all in this play, Neil Simon delivers insight in the life of egocentric people and their struggle in society, 'his characters are more or less well-meaning blunderers on dead-end roads' . It does not matter 'ob es um Ehe, Freundschaft oder Eltern-Kind-Beziehungen geht, immer steht das Aufeinanderprallen gegensätzlicher Lebenseinstellungen zweier Menschen im Ringen um eine mögliche Form des Zusammenlebens im Mittelpunkt' 20 pp. Englisch. …

In order to compare the two books I will first analyze them separately before taking a look at them side by side. To begin with, I would like to express some general thoughts on the two books. The House on Mango Street and Jazz are first and foremost works of fictional literature in the sense that their characters and the story itself are a product of the authors' imagination. Yet, on another level, they are works that bear the power to familiarize readers with their particular ethnic backgrounds, namely the Mexican- and Afro-American. In other words, the two stories can be seen as some sort of guideline for readers who are interested in the cultural and economic lives of minority groups in the USA of today and the past. Even though the novels are very different in their form as well as their content I think one canfind some similarities beside all the differences. In the following chapters of this paper I will first concentrate on The House on Mango Street and afterwards on Jazz. At the end I will try to make a connection between the two novels and show some of the main differences and similarities. 20 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: Sehr gut, University of Osnabrück, course: Seminar, language: English, abstract: The term 'Victorian' remains a living concept in our daily society. The term is related to the reign of Queen Victoria of England from 1837 to 1901. Since it covers a wide time span, the era has been divided into the early-Victorian period (1837-1851), the mid-Victorian period (1851-1875) and the late-Victorian period (1875-1901). 'Victorian' is also used today to describe British furniture and architecture made during the greater part of the 19th century. Additionally it refers to British literary works which were written, for instance by Wilkie Collins or Charles Dickens. Furthermore specific social and moral attitudes are associated with the word 'Victorian.'The Victorian age was an age of transition. England was transformed from a feudal and agricultural society into an industrial democracy. Nevertheless the process of the industrial revolution did not only create progress but also problems. One drawback was the hierarchy which was created in the British society leading to a division of people into distinctive social classes. In order to analyze the class distinctions more precisely this term paper concentrates on the specific class divisions that arose especially between the middle class and the working class and on how these differences were characterized. In addition, the three well known Victorian values of the middle and working class, family life, respectability and self-help, are defined and discussed. Due to the fact that it is not possible to discuss the whole Victorian period as one homogenous era, the discussion of the social classes and their values is restricted to the mid-Victorian period. In order to understand the society in the Victorian era it is necessary to depict a brief overview of the historical circumstances concerning the Victorian society. 20 pp. Englisch. …

Lucien Tesnière, who became known as the developer ofthe so called 'dependency grammar', was one of the first linguists who described thecapacity of a verb to bind a certain number of 'actants'1 (cf. Tesnière 1980, 385-386). In hisposthumously published book 'Eléments de syntaxe structurale'2 (1959) he called thisphenomenon 'valency'. Later on, other linguists adopted his notion, modified and adapted it.One of these linguists is Peter Eisenberg, a German philologist, who wrote some recentworks on grammar in which the role of verb valency is often in the center of attention.Because a period of thirty years had passed since Tesnière's first attempt to define thephenomenon of valency in linguistics, Eisenberg's approach is a lot more detailed andincludes different criteria for he had the opportunity to contribute his knowledge of othertheories which were created after Tesnière's book had been published. This term paper will draw a comparison of two works written by the authors mentionedabove with special regard to the words which are dependent on verbs. Since the verb is oftenin the center of attention when the notion of valency is concerned, the group of the otherwords which are 'governed' by the verb does not seem to be examined in the same way.Furthermore there does not even seem to be a standard term for such words (perhaps exceptfor 'arguments' (cf. Meyer 2005, 30), but even the notion of arguments is used in diverseways), so that I will use the word 'dependents' to refer to every possible linguistic elementwhich can be bound by a verb. The main aim of this paper will not only be to provide a small overview of dependents invalency theories, but also to illustrate the pros and cons of each of these theories in acomparison at the end.To introduce the reader into the topic, a small overview of the notion of valency will begiven at the beginning of the term paper. Later on, the most important aspects concerningdependents of both theories will be presented separately. After having compared the twoworks, pointed out the main discrepancies and having stated their benefits respectively theirdeficiencies, a final conclusion will be given. 20 pp. Englisch. …

As defined in The Columbia Dictionaryof Modern Literary and Cultural Criticism, reader-response criticism shifts 'critical attentionfrom the inherent, objective characteristics of the text to the engagement of the reader with thetext and the production of textual meaning by the reader.' One of the most influential readerresponsecritics, Louise Rosenblatt, informs the reader that previous, historical forms of literarycriticism primarily focused either on literature as a reflector of reality or 'the relationshipbetween the poet and his work.' Rosenblatt explains that critics perceived the reader as a passiverecipient, outshone by the author and the text; the reader became invisible.Since the 1960s, as stated in The Columbia Dictionary of Modern Literary and CulturalCriticism, the school of reader-response criticism has formed, and, as Peter Rabinowitz, professor and chair of Competitive Literature at Hamilton College, illustrates, 'becamerecognized as a distinct critical movement [.], when it found a particularly congenial politicalclimate in the growing anti-authoritarianism within the academy.' Then, most notably in theUnited States, the civil rights movement started, leading citizens to plead freedom, individuality, and nonconformity. 16 pp. Englisch. …

There are roughly 41 percent black and 45 percentwhite prisoners awaiting their execution. Since the reinstatement of capital punishment in 1976,1047 people have been executed. (Death Row 1, 5). Among all U.S. states allowing the deathpenalty, California, Texas and Florida have the most criminals on death row (Death Row 29).Normally, major reasons in favor of capital punishments are retribution, deterrence, and thegeneral protection of society. Many people experience poetic justice and indemnification whenmurderers receive their death sentences. They disregard the unproportional, high cost of the capitalpunishment process which evolves due to repeated appeals and prisoners spending years or evendecades on death row (Banner 295). 16 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Scientific Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Sociology - Law and Delinquency, grade: A, Loughborough University (United Kingdom Loughborough University), course: Economics of Criminology , language: English, abstract: Criminality is and has always been an urgent issue for the society. Its magnitude has been rising dramatically in many western countries. Since 1946, crime rates in Britain have increased by the factor 10 and nowadays about 25% to 30% of the OECD-citizens are victimised each year. Together with criminality, public expenditure for the Criminal Justice System (CJS) has been rising sharply. In order to achieve one of the declared main purposes of the CJS, 'to reduce crime and the fear of crime and their social and economic costs', theories of crime are an important contribution of the sciences. Accordingly, they are an important subject in many scientific fields: Psychology, Sociology and the Economic Sciences offer a large variety of different theories to explain the diverse aspects of criminality. The following text will discuss how and to what extend theories of crime and in particular economic theories of crime can help to reduce crime and the fear of crime. In the process, first the economic and social cost- dimensions of crime will be elucidated. Then, crime theories and in particular Becker's theory as the pioneering work of economic criminology will be introduced. Eventually, a critical view on theories of crime and the economic approach as well as an analysis of its distinctive advantages will be elaborated. 20 pp. Englisch. …
