From the Foreword: I have prepared this anthology with the aim of providing the reader with an overview of modern sijo, Korean verse written in traditional form since the early 1900s up to the present. As a companion volume to Classical Korean Poetry (1986), this collection will, I hope, serve to put sijo in a broad perspective. As a guiding principle, I have made a point of presenting as many poems as possible from each poet, using the concept of culling the choicest of the choice, so that anyone concerned with today's sijo might have in-depth access to them. In the process of selection, however, I have been obliged to exclude those poems, which fall, I suspect, within the category of the untranslatable. And with the exception of a few important poets, I have eliminated ossijo and sasol sijo, medium and prose poems in which one of three lines in a poem are extended to any number of syllables. I have set a limit of 3 or 4 stanzas when a poem is written in multi-stanzas. The 73 poets represented in this volume can as major or promising figures stand for the significant trends and variety of modern Korean poetry composed in traditional form. And yet I do not claim my book to be comprehensive; it can only be representative, for there are more than one thousand living poets. The chronological arrangement of poets in each period is intended for convenience. It does not mean that the older poets necessarily preceeded the younger in establishing themselves as poets. Neither is it important. The original poems in this book have mostly been reordered with the permission of each poet into a three line scheme, regardless of the varied number of lines from two to seven or more. Be that as it may, practically all the poems, of course, exclusive of a few long poems, adhere to the fixed syllable count of 45 on the average. My primary concern in translation has been to give each poem as much of a natural tone as possible. In order to convey each poet's tone and imagery as he or she intended, I have tried to be faithful to the whole tonal texture rather than to the literal transposition of words. Yet there is more to it than the mere communication of ideas and images, for good translation is an act of poetry. To translate a poem whole is to compose another poem. And at times the translator has to invent formal effects in his own language that gives a sense of those produced by the original in its own. 414 pages.
