Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. This book attempts to disentangle the legend of Henri Rousseau from fact. It is an exacting biography based on documents and insights by Rousseau's contemporaries, and reveals dates and information hitherto unknown about the artist. Dora Vallier has travelled all over the world to study Rousseau's paintings and has made her analyses of them the focus of her book. As in her previous writings, the author's analytical approach immediately enables the reader to recognize the painter's creative processes. Her method has the advantage of explaining the development of Rousseau's work in a chronological context. The sources of his many paintings are discussed, including the famous "Sleeping Gypsy" and "War". We are also shown the sequence in which Rousseau repainted or added to many canvases, as well as his reasons for doing so. Now, fifty years after his death, the immense significance of the chronology of Rousseau's work is seen for the first time.
