The participants in the Institute dealt with protein phosphorylation as the most prevalent…mode of regulation of cellular processes. First, methods needed to analyze the complex cascade systems involved were reviewed, including protein sequencing, crystallo graphy, characterization and isolation of membrane proteins, use of monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies and application of fluorescent probes. In great detail the x ray crystallographic structure of glycogen phosphorylase was presented. This enzyme is located at the end of a signal cascade triggered by the hormonal activation of the membrane-bound adenylate cyclase. The interaction of the hormone/receptor with the catalytic subunit of the adenylate cyclase involves GTP-binding proteins. The function of these recently detected intermembrane coupling factors were reviewed, as weIl as the structure and properties of various protein kinases. 2 Major emphasis was placed on Ca + as a second messenger, its metabolism, mechanism of release and uptake from intracellular stores and its role on cell motility and muscle contraction. Two classes of protein phosphatases were discussed. The School was primarily devoted to new concepts… in the theory of magnetism in metals, alloys, and metallic compounds, but, as can be seen from the table of contents of the book, other topics of the theory of magnetism were also discussed in the course of the lec tures. The organizers agreed to such a broadening of the scope in order to satisfy particular requests from the Polish participants for whose benefit the School was organized. These 'local' interests are clearly reflected in the Proceedings and are responsible for a certain inhomogeneity of the topics selected for presentation. Nevertheless, we have a strong hope that these materials will be interesting to many physicists, not only in Poland, for the subjects discussed here are important not only on the local level, as the lectures contain quite fresh, unpublished results or excellent up to-date reviews. The first part of the volume contains lectures directly cor responding to the title of the School, i.e., selected topics of the theory of metallic magnetism, with slight bias toward rare earth and actinide metals and their compounds. The current status of our knowledge on drugs affecting prostanoid metabolic pathways, and/or their functinal effects, together with the use of prostanoids as drugs, has been reviewed in depth by distinguished experts. In certain instances a few chapters might overlap with others to present divergent viewpoints of authors, for a better assessment of the complexity of eicosanoid biology. It is likely that as our knowledge of prostanoids in different diseases increases, new diseases may also be targets for drugs related to these lipid mediators. I will not discuss which of these approaches are most welcome, bu…t it did cause me to consider the speed of advance in genetic engineering, and the implications of this rapid growth. There were few who anticipated it - only five years ago, most scientists thought applications would come at the end of the century, yet we see products such as insulin and interferon already available for clinical testing. In Europe in general and Britain in particular, this explosive growth in our own field has coincided with a general industrial depression and a marked reduction in funding for biomedical research. The brain drain from Britain is a serious matter, for we are losing the best of our younger scientists, on whom we would rely to train the next generation of molecular biologists. The ever increasing amount of experimental data was in need of some unified method of classification which would yield unambiguous and possibly complete information on the polarographic behavior of organic substances. Dr. Zuman's book presents an original attempt to meet this need by providing a system based on correlations between the polaro graphic half-wave potentials of organic depolarizers and their Hammett constants. I consider this a very happy conception, for, more than any other book yet written, it brings polarography nearer to the organic chemist; and it will undoubtedly convince him that, in its application to his subject, the method is more than a mere analytical tool. The author hardly needs any introduction. During many years of research in the field of organic polarography, he has published numerous papers on a variety of problems; his latest interest is the application of the Hammett-Taft equation to polarographic measure ments, in which he has done pioneering work. Nuttall pioneered the study of phylogeny through the ge netically encoded sequence structures of proteins. His classic monograph, Blood Immllnity and Blood Relationship, was published in 1904. The findings described in… this monograph testified that immunologic compar isons of serum proteins could help reveal the phyletic relationships of primates and other animals. Although Nuttall had no way of knowing that a correspondence between the nucleotide sequences of genes and the amino acid sequences of proteins was the genetic basis for the immuno logic specificities of animal sera, he clearly saw the implications of his findings. Thus he wrote in the introduction of his monograph, 'The per sistence of the chemical blood-relationship between the various groups of animals serves to carry us back into geological times, and I believe we have but begun the work along these lines, and that it will lead to valuable results in the study of various problems of evolution. ' Nuttall's prophecy is being fulfilled. Through the first two-thirds of the 20th century immu nology led the way in the molecular analysis of the phyletic relationships of animal taxa above the species level. Amino acid sequencing of proteins began in earnest during the 1960s. An important aspect of metal plating technology is the use of a modulated or pulsed-current regime to provide better control over deposit morphology. The availability of new techniques and instrumentation, coupled with the development of daring new hypotheses and… concepts, has paved the way for the dramatic evolution of parasitology from a static descriptive endeavor to a dynamic one based on biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, and modern cell biology. Studies of this nature obviously fall within the domain of pathobiology. Consequently, when the contributions included in this volume of Comparative PathobioZogy were offered to this series. after critical review, we welcomed the opportunity to make them available to the scientific community. The contributions included herein represent presentations delivered before enthusiastic audiences at three different symposia, all held in 1983. The first, entitled 'Some Aspects of Modern Parasitology', was organized by Dr. Gary E. Rodrick of the University of South Florida and myself on behalf of the American Society of Zoologists. The chapters by C. E. Carter and B. M. Wickwire. B. J. Bogitsh, and W. M. Kemp were originally presented at that symposium. The second symposium. organized by Dr. G. Balouet of the Faculte de Medecine, Brest, France, and myself on behalf,of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology, was entitled 'Cellular Reactions in Invertebrates.' The chapters by G. In the last two decades the great commercial demand for solid-state electronic devices has stimulated research into the funda mental properties of semiconductors. At the same time as semiconductor devices were becoming techno logically important, the technique of electron spin resonance was first being used on a large scale, principally at the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford. Both solid-state physics and electron spin resonance have now reached the stage where they are useful to each other, primarily in the realm of the atomic properties of matter. Dr Lancaster's book is one of a series of monographs that aims at covering as comprehensively as possible the field of electron spin resonance. His book has been written for those who wish to know some thing about the way in which the electron spin resonance technique has been used in the study of semiconductors. Behaviour is the primary interface between these effective survival machines and their environment: behavioural plasticity is one of the keys to their success. The study of animal behaviour has undergone revolutionary changes in the past decade under the dual impact of behavioural ecology and sociobiology. At the time we were hoping that our approach of writing a book which would be both accessible without mathematical sophistication and portray these exiting new field…s in an authentic manner would find an audience. Now we know it did. We know from many reviews and personal letters that the book is used in a wide range of ways: researchers use it to acquaint themselves, teachers use it in college and university courses, students use it for background reading, and there is also a substantial audience of lay people who just want to know what chaos and fractals are about. Every book that is somewhat technical in nature is likely to have a number of misprints and errors in its first edition. Some of these were caught and brought to our attention by our readers. One of them, Hermann Flaschka, deserves to be thanked in particular for his suggestions and improvements. This second edition has several changes. We have taken out thetwo appendices from the firstedition. At the time of the first edition Yuval Fishers contribution, which we published as an appendix was probably the first complete expository account on fractal image compression. The main aim of the Summer Institute was to provide a compre hensive introduction for mainly young post-doctoral theoretical physicists to the currently most discussed subjects in supersynnne try and supergravity. The intention was to emphasize the pedagogi cal presentation. The seminars given in addition to the introduc tory lectures treat more specialized subjects and are closer to research reports. Since the topics, ranging fromalgebraic structures to experimental implications do not arrange easily in a one-dimension al array, the lectures are reproduced in alphabetic order of the lec turers. Neuware -For a number of years, there existed a real gap between the science of metal complexes and that of electron spin resonance (ESR). Simple reasons account for this fact. At a certain stage of development the scientists engaged in investi…gations of metal complexes did not have access to ESR instrumen tation, while on the other hand, ESR theoreticians rarely had an interest in exploring the chemical applications of metal complexes. More recently chemical physicists have started to make intensive efforts to bridge the gap by applying the ESR technique to a wide range of chemical problems, particularly those involving transition metals and their complexes. In large measure the successes of the theory of the electronic structure of transition metal ions are due to the comprehensive and precise results of ESR studies by chemical physicists. On the other hand, chemists also seem to have realized lately that an immense amount of information can be obtained from ESR data. It is obvious, therefore, that a symposium bringing together the various disciplines was necessary, and there was little doubt that in such a symposium a considerable advantage could be gained from the exchange of information among scientists with different research interests. The aim of these Symposia is to bring together, by personal invitation, a limited number of leading scientists from various countries to discuss the current research situation within the field and to define the most urgent problems to be solved. One of the most important fields in modern biome dical research concerns the structure and function of biological membranes. Research on this subject is very active and important scientific contributions appear at an increasing rate. It was therefore considered highly appropriate to devote Nobel Symposium 34 to the struc ture of membranes in order to get an expert summary of what is now known in the field. The Symposium was held at Hotel Billingehus in Skovde (about 150 km from Goteborg), Sweden, from June 7 to 11, 1976. In addition to the grant from the Nobel Foundation financial support was received from the No bel Institute of Chemistry of the Royal Academy of Sciences and from the Science Fund of Wilhelm and Martina Lundgren. The Symposium was attended by some 50 scientists. The papers in this Volume had been distributed in ad vance to all partiCipants. Yet, the march of progress in semi conductors continues ,unabated - new semiconductor materials are in the research stage, new process technology is being developed, and new devices are being conceived. The second class of materials dealt with in the course, magnetic alloys and insulators, also has a firm application base; for example, computer performance is often measured in terms of the size of the magnetic memory. Although a symposium dedicated to the chemistry, metabolism and effects of juvenile hormone at a number of levels would be merited on the basis of its interest to the chemist, physiologist, endo crinologist, developmental biologist and entomologist, the juvenile hormones are special in the sense that juvenile hormone mimics (juvenoids, insect growth regulators, analogs) are currently being utilized to control various insec. t pests. Indeed, a number of commercial firms are currently developing new compounds with juven ile hormone activity that might possess a narrow spectrum of acti vity and which would be relatively biodegradable. Thus, a symposium on the juvenile hormones is also merited on a practical basis since juvenoids are already becoming constituents of our environment and it is apparent that in order to design effective mimics of the natural juvenile hormones, o~e should understand the means by which juvenile hormone elicits its effects. As will become evident to the reader, the great majority of data presented at this symposium have not been published previously and the symposium itself was organized along natural divisions dealing with the chemistry, metaoolism and multi-level modes of action of the juvenile hormones. The developments in this field of research have, we felt, necessitated the making of a comprehensive compilation of the published thermal neutron papers. The large number of titles collected in this book, as well as their diversity and their yearly distribution, reflects the continued contribution of the neutron probe to our understanding of physical systems. This bibliography is an updated and improved version of the one first published by us in March of 1973 under a similar title. Many of the omissions and inconsistencies of the first edition, such as occurred, for example, in the initialing of authors' names, have been corrected. The literature search has been carried back to 1932, the year when the existence of the neutron was experimentally confirmed. Several additional journals have also been searched and brought up to date together with those listed in our first publication.
