Pearson Summary: The Railway History of Lincoln by J. G. Ruddock and R. E. Pearson is regarded as one of the definitive histories of Lincoln's railway development. First published in 1974 and expanded in a second edition in 1985, it provides a detailed account of how the railways shaped the city from the early nineteenth century onwards. The book is described as including not only the railways themselves but also pre-railway transport, proposed lines that were never built, and Lincoln's railway engineering industries. The authors begin by examining transport in Lincoln before the railway age, describing the city's reliance on roads, turnpikes, canals, and the River Witham. They explain why Lincoln's geography and growing trade created pressure for faster and more reliable transport. The book then traces the arrival of the railway during the 1840s Railway Mania, detailing how competing companies promoted different routes into Lincoln. It describes the opening of the Midland Railway from Nottingham via Newark in 1846 and the Great Northern Railway connections that soon followed, transforming Lincoln into an important regional railway centre. Ruddock Summary: This book is a local history account of the Lincolnshire village of Boothby Graffoe and the nearby medieval Somerton Castle. The book combines historical records, archaeology, and local traditions to explain how the area developed over the centuries. The book begins by describing Boothby Graffoe, a small village about 7 miles south of Lincoln. Ruddock traces its origins back to the Domesday Book (1086), explaining its Scandinavian place-name and its importance within the medieval district known as the Graffoe Wapentake. He discusses the village church, local farms, notable families, and changes in agriculture and village life over time. Somerton Castle, located about a mile west of the village. Ruddock describes how Antony Bek (Anthony Bek), Bishop of Durham, obtained permission to build the castle in 1281. Designed as a quadrangular castle with four circular corner towers and surrounded by moats, it was both a fortified residence and a symbol of wealth and power. Author: J. G. Ruddock Publisher: J. The inaugural lecture delivered at Birbeck College on May 23, 1960 by Nikolaus Pevsner, a German-British historian best known for his 46-volume series, The Buildings of England (1951-1974). In his lecture, Pevsner discusses the architectural planning of Elizabethan houses that includes 38 figures and 16 black & white photographs. This may have been Pevsner's copy as his surname is written on the front wrapper and a typed partial letter to him is stapled inside the front wrapper. Typed in 1961 from an unknown figure at Wadham College who begins the letter apologizing for "bothering you with the tedious subject of money" before providing critical feedback on Pevsner's lecture. Unfortunately only one leaf (typed on both sides) is still present, which may have been done intentionally by Pevsner since it was the portion commenting on his lecture. There are some marginal corrections in pen throughout the text. Pevsner was born in Germany to Jewish parents and was forced to flee Germany in 1933 during the Nazi rise to power. Controversially, according to his biographer Stephen Games, Pevsner was initially supportive of the Nazi movement and especially Goebbels' attempt to preserve only "pure" non-decadent German art. After settling in Britain, he was interned briefly during WWII, but went on to have a distinguished academic career. Stapled wrappers, 24 pp., illustrated. Slight edge wear to wrappers, a very good copy.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Small octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-131 [132: printer's imprint] [133-136: blank] [note: first and last leaves are used as front and rear paste-downs, original rose boards, spine panel stamped in black. First edition. "A man awakens after a half-million years, in surroundings that are meant to imitate those of his own period. (The details are 'uncannily like, and equally uncannily not like.') He is the last member of his race, and he is encouraged to write down this first-person account, more as a way of coming to terms with his own situation, to preserve his sanity for the brief remainder of his life, than as a communication to anyone else now alive, whose frame of reference is so profoundly different from his own as to render him a member of a different (and extinct) species. As a utopian tale of the far future, it is notable on several counts: its brevity (this is a novella, really), its succinctness, its easy readability, its omission of the usual 'tour-guide' to explain the new society (and turn the narrative into an essay), its emphasis on the alien quality of the new world, taking it beyond those terms that could let us see it as either eutopian or dystopian. Also, by setting the story in a manufactured facsimile of the familiar world rather than setting forth the usual futuristic/utopian furniture (e.g., men and women in white flowing robes; airships and other gizmos, all powered by electricity; tediously detailed explanations of the new improved legislatures, telephones, sewage treatment systems, etc.), the author adds another level of meaning to the story, making it a powerful allegory about the alienation of existence in the present-day world. Tayler would not have been the only person in postwar Europe who felt profoundly alienated from a world that was evolving away from the familiar at a frightening and accelerating speed; but he was the only one who expressed that alienation in an imaginative work of this nature. A very interesting book." - Robert Eldridge. "Evolution and the far future. In some ways a remarkable work that should receive more attention than it has. The author conveys well the emotional strain of the narrator and adds many imaginative touches that anticipate later science-fiction, notably W. Olaf Stapledon." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2157. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 51. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 211. Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 1088. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 176. Bleiler (1978), p. 191. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). "Withdrawn" stamped on the half title page, private owner's signature there too. Slight spine lean. boards sunned, spine tanned, internally clean, a good, sound copy. A very uncommon book. (#165144).…
