Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Original publisher's yellow paper wrappers. 5 1/2" x 9." Twenty-four pages, complete. Pages are intact overall but have faint foxing or staining throughout, wrinkling, and light age toning. Covers are clean ad intact overall but have some darkening and creasing. A Very Good copy. This is a speech that was originally given by Samuel Young on July 4, 1840 at the Methodist Episcopal Church on Greene Street, New York. Young gave this address on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of American independence. In his speech, Young speaks about many philosophical principles as they relate to democracy, despotism, human history, human nature, and early American history. However, Young also has a perspective in favor of the Democratic Republicans and against the Federalists, the latter of whom he refers to as "aristocratic." Young begins by noting how since the "remotest periods of antiquity," human civilizations have been characterized by "palaces of tyrants and the graves of the oppressed." He attributes this unfortunate trend in history to a number of factors including the thirst for power and other follies of human nature. Young contrasts despotism with the United States government and how the U.S. was founded upon principles of liberty, justice, and equality. He delves into specific phrases of the Declaration of Independence such as "all men are created equal" and "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." He says that protection to 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness' embraces all the good that the most perfect government can bestow." Young says that if a government no longer protects these three inalienable rights, "it degenerates into an evil instead of being a blessing." Young also discusses the necessity and duties of government and that governments should only be elected by the people. He says that "the price of liberty is eternal vigilance." Young then speaks hopefully of the protections the U.S. government has against aspiring despots. He says that enough protections are in place so as to prevent despots from openly attacking American democracy but that they might try tactics of "disguise and deception." He elaborates, "And it is only by fraud, by perversion, and falsehood, and by appeals to the passions instead of the understanding, that the aspiring demagogue and voracious monopolist can hope to succeed." Young explains further that this is why it is ever important to have "sound principles and correct information." He continues, "Hence the responsibility which rests upon every citizen who feels within his bosom the impulse of patriotism . carefully to investigate and rightly to understand the legitimate duties and functions of human government . [and to] unmask the cheat, and to detect the impostor." Young also explains that aspiring despots rely upon ignorance and gullibility in the community and that society must have citizens who are educated and follow virtue. He says, "It was for the want of this basis that the ancient democracies . lost the popular control and crumbled into ruins. An ignorant and illiterate multitude, under the guidance of passion instead of reason, ever have been, and ever will be, easy prey to the machinations of the aspiring few. By artfully diffusing amongst such a populace the germs of jealousy, fear, hatred, cupidity and ambition, they are broken into hostile fragments, and exhaust their energies into mutual destruction." From about Page 14 onward, Young argues his viewpoints in favor of Democrats and against the Whigs (he likens the Democrats to Democratic Republicans and the Whigs to Federalists, the latter of whom he reviles). For example, Young has sharp criticism for the national bank and use of paper currency. Throughout Pages 14-24, Young insinuates that Democrats are supporters of liberty and other democratic virtues and that Whigs and Federalists are tied to elitist corruption.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper wrappers. Text printed in black ink. 5 1/2" x 8 3/4." Twenty-four pages, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall but have slight chipping along spine, light foxing, and faint dampstains limited to margins of fore-edge. A Very Good copy. "Published by request of the Democratic Republican Committee." This is a commemorative address that was delivered by Edwin Forrest at the Democratic Republican celebration of the 62nd anniversary of Independence Day (July 4) in the United States. Edwin Forrest (1806-1872) was an American Shakespearean actor. Forrest's speaking style within this oration is laudatory as he praises the "experiment" set forth by the Founding Fathers, the United States' Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. Forrest speaks highly of the U.S.'s democratic form of government. He holds that private rights and freedom are sacred and that despots and non-representational governments around the world pale in comparison to the U.S.'s constitutional republic. Forrest uses poetic prose to convey his message of not only commending the independence and government of the U.S. but also speaking against contemporary (and perhaps future) opponents who criticize the way in which the U.S. is governed. He appears to say to these hypothetical critics that no better form of government in the world has since manifested itself.…

Full-Leather. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. A good copy of the very scarce 1st edition with 39 (of 41) folding plates. At the time this book was published, Batty Langley (1696-1751) was a designer of landscape gardens with particular interest in classical proportion and design. It was his first published work, and many of plates show designs for gardens and garden ornamentation. He later moved into architecture. This copy has contemporary panelled calf boards and a newer matching spine with raised bands and title label. The boards are scuffed and there is some ring marking on the back board, but they are bright and clean. The corners have been rebuilt. Internally the endpapers have been retained with taping at the joints. There are some ink sums on the rear pastedown and a little marking on the front free endpaper. Contents: rubricated title; dedication 2pp; Preface pp i-viii; Table of Contents with errata 8pp; text pp 1-136 with some plates in the text and a series of plates at the rear. Plates 30 and 40 are missing. Text with decorative initial capitals, headpieces and tailpieces. There is some mispagination (89-78-79-92 and 95-66-97) but the text is continuous. There is some annotation - generally sums and figures in the margins - at pp 111/112 some of the ink has run and blotched. There is some staining and marking - with a larger stain in the top gutter and edge at pp 43-66, and some persistent staining in the bottom corners. There are some professional paper repairs: the gutter of the title page and some of the plates - mainly to edges not affecting the subject apart from plate32 where there is small loss on the design. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images to further assess condition. Batty Langley (illustratore).…
