Paperback. Condizione: Good. "This book", Patricia Lunneborg writes, "documents a brilliant way out, for fifteen individuals, of this Age of Uncertainty for men." This way out is the Open University. "OU Men" studies and documents the way that this remarkable institution has affected, indeed empowered, the lives of fifteen working men who hail from Manchester, Preston, and the East End, but also from Iran, India, Uganda, Ghana and Jamaica. Lawry Rhodes studied Law at Nottingham University, but failed his second year examinations. He became a building society manager, but found that his employers were more and more concerned with statistics and personal profit than with his interests or those of his customers. He began to learn with the Open University. Fearing for his job, "morally disgruntled", but now with much study behind him, he quit. Today, with a B.A., Lawry Rhodes is a high school English teacher, and has published his poetry in a scholarly journal. He is one of the men who here narrate their lives up to and through the experience of further education at the Open University. The backdrop is the rapid and ruthless development in the world of work, especially the male world of work, in the second half of the twentieth century. Through the interviews recorded here, these men explain what education with the Open University has made possible for them in their different environments, how it has affected not only their attitudes to work and their job prospects, but also their relationships and often their values. From this candid interview material, Dr Lunneborg develops a wide-ranging analysis of the relationships between employment, education and personal life in contemporary Britain.Drawing upon the work of Charles Handy, Jeremy Rifkin and Will Hutton, she analyses the phenomena of downsizing, job-dissatisfaction, 'presenteeism' (the compulsion to work absurdly long hours) and the threat of obsolescence, drawing out a cautiously optimistic prognosis. Education alone can develop the portable skills portfolio that forms the basis for a lifelong and manageable working life. Yet no less important, the author urges, is the willingness to detach male identities from paid employment, and to learn to bend our increased flexibility to the needs and opportunities of community service. "OU Men" will interest the ever increasing number of people involved in or considering an OU course, or any other distance learning programme. It will also be of value to those involved in the teaching and psychology of distance learning, and to anyone concerned with the anatomy of contemporary Britain and the ongoing changes in the world labour market."An inspiring and powerful book.the stories of these OU men pack a tremendous punch of optimism and hope. These inspiring stories contain some wonderful vignettes of modern life." - From the Foreword by Sir John Daniel, Vice Chancellor of The Open University. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Geoffrey Gerard's guide to Nearly 200 guest houses, monasteries, convents, Buddhist and other retreat houses has proved deservedly popular. It is recommended to all who have felt the need for rest and quiet, or for time to stop and think about life and death. Mr Gerard's interest in retreat houses and spiritual centres led him to visit over a hundred of them throughout Britain. In this new and updated edition, the author begins by discussing what it means to go on retreat and makes useful suggestions on how to prepare for it. The remainder of the book is devoted to individual retreat houses and centres, and the reader benefits from the author's personal experience of many of these houses. Practical information is included, such as how to get there and details of the facilities available, together with brief descriptions of the surroundings and the atmosphere that visitors can expect to find. The book is divided into regions under which the various houses are listed. They are also fully indexed at the end of the book. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Revised and updated, this edition of Teaching Christianity is a tool for today's teacher. Religious education has been a major area of debate in recent years, and the place of Christianity within it has been at the heart of the debate. This text covers the issues raised for teachers, whatever their own standpoints and beliefs, who are involved in teaching pupils about the subject. It does so by seeing Christianity as a world religion, and describes the implications of this vision for teachers, school governors and all who are involved in education. The text is divided into three sections. The first examines major issues in the study of Christianity, the second explores aspects of Christianity that might be taught in the classroom and the third and largest section offers examples of good classroom practice, considering the related issues of method, evaluation and assessment. Contributors are: Alan Brown, Peter Curtis, Peter Doble, Clive Erricker, Cherry Gould, Mary Hayward, Nora Horrigan, David Minton, David Morling, David Naylor, John Rankin, Trevor Shannon, Harry Stephens and Angela Wood. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. When Australia defeated England for the first time on English soil in 1882, a mock obituary notice was inserted in the Sporting Times lamenting the 'death' of English cricket and stating that the body was to be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. Later, an urn containing ashes came to be recognised as cricketing trophy, and now resides permanently at Lord's cricket ground. The mystery is this: where did the Ashes come from, and are they in fact still there? The author examines the official story and other, alternative suggestions, and details the personalities involved in the foundation of this great tradition. To understand the full significance of the Ashes to both countries, the author recounts the triumphant Australian tour of England in 1882, and the subsequent 'recovery' of the Ashes by England in Australia a year later. Cricket's Biggest Mystery: The Ashes is one of the most fascinating books to be written on the foundation of the competition for what must be one of sport's most unusual trophies. It will be a welcome addition to the library of every cricket enthusiast. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This beautiful book describes and illustrates birds throughout the world which are threatened with depletion in numbers, or even with extinction. In doing so it not only provides the first comprehensive coloured guide to such species, as a reference for all those who are concerned about the diminishing variety of animals in the world, but it also acts as a handbook for officials who are charged with controlling the trade in such creatures under the aegis of CITES. CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, was founded in 1973 and signed by 21 states. There are now more than 120 member states. The Convention list all threatened endangered species and regulates their import and export. The enforcement of the rules has been hampered by the lack of an accurate colour guide and this is the first book to provide a means to positively identify the species at risk. It includes: beautiful and detailed watercolour illustrations; concise descriptions of each species; 406 species described and illustrated in colour; Quick Guide to Bird Families of the World; glossary of technical terms translated into French, German and Spanish; world map with key to identify countries/regions of distribution; CITES appendices describing the protected status allocated to species; Index of Latin names; an indispensable reference for all controlling authorities, such as bird conservationists, customs officers, taxidermists, aviculturalists and scientific advisers. The life and artistry of the illustrations will bring pleasure to many bird lovers the world over, too. It is a book which will be treasured for years to come for its usefulness and for its beauty. Includes a Foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. This book was sponsored by AAGE V. JENSEN Charity Foundation, Denmark. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Part of the Century series - each book reviews and summarises the key developments in a particular branch of religious studies during the past century. Protestant theology did not begin a hundred years ago, but it is within the last century that so many significant developments have taken place. It is these developments which are Alasdair Heron's primary concern, though in order to put them in their proper context, he has also provided outlines of earlier thinking. Whilst the main emphasis is Protestant, the last chapter looks at the new horizons opened up by encounter with the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox, with other religions and with the natural sciences. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 2004 marked the 400th anniversary of the decision, taken in January 1604 at the Hampton Court Conference, to produce a new Bible, the King James. However, the history of the English Bible is not widely known. Let It Go among Our People is the story of the birth of the English Bible, the development of its literary style, and its tumultuous political history. In England, unlike almost every other country, it was illegal to translate the word of God into the vernacular. This ban lasted one hundred and twenty-seven years. Overcoming the political and ecclesiastical resistance to an English Bible was a dangerous and difficult task. Lives were lost not only for producing English Bibles, but also for the act of owning or reading them. The authors also analyse the language used in the Bible, viewing the whole as literature whilst studying its translation, and comparing important passages in different versions. Such close study of the text itself is warranted because the English Bible has had a profound effect on English language, literature, politics and ideas and has left a lasting impression on the language we speak today. No other language, save perhaps German, can boast that its vernacular translation of the Bible is a literary masterpiece in its own right. This in-depth and fascinating study is finely illustrated from manuscript, incunabula and other early books to help to trace the development of this religious, literary and historical masterpiece. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Good. In the debate about homosexuality one thing that seems clear - on a issue renowned for lack of clarity and controversy - is that two fundamentally incompatible positions continue to held tenaciously. One asserts that homosexual acts are legitimate, the other that they are not. Concentration on the legitimacy of sexual expression rather than on underlying needs has made the debate about homosexuality incapable of resolution. Homosexuality : A New Christian Ethic presents a psychoanalytic interpretation that has shifted the focus of the debate from symptoms to root causes. The crux of Elizabeth Moberly's argument is that 'the homosexual condition involves legitimate developmental needs, the fulfilment of which has been blocked by an underlying ambivalence to members of the same sex'. But while the argument is certainly controversial, it involves a much-needed restatement of the traditional Christian distinction between the homosexual condition and its expression in homosexual activity. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Since 1737 readers of all kinds have relied on Cruden's Complete Concordance to the Old and New Testaments as their guide to the Bible. Its simple alphabetical arrangement and compact design make it easy to navigate the more than 225,000 entries. As well as listing verses that include each word treated, Cruden's quotes each passage briefly to provide an indication of context. When the sense is unclear, the word is defined and different meanings explained. So, whether you want to find all the places where 'write' is used or you need to know the varying senses of 'adoption', Cruden's Concordance is an invaluable study companion. The work has been frequently revised and corrected, and few comparable reference books can be as accurate and up-to-date. It is based on the Authorised Version, but also notes places where the Revised Version or American Revision has altered the text. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The Bible, as is often said, is the world's least-read bestseller. That is particularly true of the Old Testament. People are often put off by the sheer bulk of the material and its frequently undistinguished quality. John Dancy has selected large samples from most of the canonical and apocryphal books, amounting to just under a third of the total, chosen for artistic merit and intrinsic interest rather than for representative status or theological value. Literature of this stature, he says, should not be restricted to academics and believers. To make it more approachable, the text is presented with commentary on the same page, in smaller type so that attention is never diverted from the original. The commentary mostly concentrates on literary matters but provides technical explanations where necessary. In addition a sensitive and sound introduction also puts the Hebrew writings in the historical context of the ancient Near East. Extracts are used from a variety of translations, preferring the most faithful in language, tone and style for each section. Accuracy is a prime concern, but so is poetry. Above all, the selections bring out the inherent dramatic qualities of the verse dialogues and narrative prose. Nothing quite like this has yet been made available. The Divine Drama will be a welcome addition to the library of any thoughtful reader who cares for good stories. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
