Reading the African Novel is an ambitious study which makes an imaginative contribution to the understanding of fiction whether it is written in English or is accessible through the medium of English. Simon Gikandi shows that narrative form, whether-it is rooted in the African oral tradition or in more self-conscious modernist techniques, enables the novelist to engage and illuminate distinctive periods of African history. In this way the novelist can challenge and change the reader's perception of the African experience. The work is the result of years of involvement with theories of fiction and the relationship between sociology and aesthetics in the novel. 'a most sensitive, perceptive, intelligent and mature piece of literary criticism such as one rarely finds.
