Reproduced from the original edition of 1893 - Cyril Wright, the Secretary of the Richard Jefferies Society, writes on the reasons for the upsurge of interest in this author: I think (hat the key is to be found in the interests and concerns of those who seek and read his books with pleasure and advantage. They are mostly nature-lovers, conservationists, and students of literature and of Victorian rural life. Jefferies was recognised in his day as an authority on country matters, and also as one who opened the eyes of prosaic town-dwellers to the beauties and wonders of nature. What was then comment and information on the contemporary rural scene can now be studied and enjoyed as an authentic picture of that period. Changes were even then taking place in farming methods and in the outward development of cities, and these were the forerunners of the internal combustion engine; the motorway; improved standards of living for rural workers; ribbon building and the urban sprawl. The natural scene has altered too. In the 1880's there seemed no conceivable threat to the richness and variety of our flora and fauna. Common sights and sounds then are now precious in their rarity; some species have vanished; many others gravely endangered.
