Wing R167. Wing R1956. In very good condition. Armorial bookplate to each pastedown. A nice example of Raleigh's famed history, very rare uniformly bound with its scarce second part. "The success of Raleighâs History can perhaps be explained by the very fact that it is not a work of history in the academic sense but a political tract of immediate applicability. Its author embodied all the glories of the reign of Elizabeth I, which at the time of publication had already begun to be transfigured into a golden age. Raleigh can be taken as the epitome of the Elizabethan idea of courtier and politician, sailor and explorer, writer and poet. He was among the first Englishmen to envisage clearly that the Americas should be the principal goal of English overseas expansion. The reversal of Elizabethâs policy by James I encompassed Raleighâs ruin. He finally fell a victim to Jamesâs pro-Spanish inclinations, and the last Elizabethan died by the executionerâs axe" (PMM 117).…

Boswell's Life of Johnson remains the most famous biography in any language, one of Western literature's most germinal achievements: unprecedented in its time in its depth of research and its extensive use of private correspondence and recorded conversation, it sought to dramatize its subject in his authorial greatness.to the task of life writing, Boswell brought his forensic and evidence-sifting habits from his Edinburgh legal training. But though [Boswell's work] has delighted many.it remains.as controversial as it is famous. It has been attacked [by]. some Johnsonian scholars.Nonetheless, later scholarship has properly supplemented but never supplanted Life's basic vision, and has drawn upon Boswell's work as a central source even in those challenges to aspects of its representation" (Oxford DNB). Three volumes, octavo. iv-xxxiv, 536; [2], 605; [2], 573 pp. Two folding plates in volume three, one of which is a facsimile "Round Robin" with signatures and the second being a facsimile of Johnson's handwriting. Contemporary calf with red and green morocco spine labels lettered and ruled in gilt. Binding extremities lightly rubbed, back joint of Vol. I cracked, but sound. Light foxing, toning, chips, and creasing to some pages in all volumes in addition to occasional minor stains. Faded contemporary ink annotations on front flyleaf of Volume I. Faded contemporary ink signature on title pages of Volumes I, II and III. A very good copy in a handsome binding. First Dublin edition. The first English edition was published in 1791.…

Johnson.A very attractive copy of the most popular work of Philip Miller (1691-1771), the foremost British gardener of the eighteenth century, with five folding plates of botanical illustrations. 'Miller's Gardener's Kalendar, published in fifteen editions between 1732 and 1765, catered for the modest gardener who needed practical advice [Miller] produced a work not only portable, but also at a price to suit those who could not afford a larger book. At four shillings a copy it came within the purse of most and indeed was judged to be "a manual to the whole kingdom". Its aim was to bring into "one easy and concise view" what might be of use to those "hindered by other avocations from bestowing much time in the study of this delightful and innocent work" Under each month could be found directions for work to be done in the kitchen garden with notes on its produce, the pleasure or flower garden with plants then in flower, and the greenhouse and stove with their plants in bloom' (Le Rougetel, pp. 1013).
