However, when bone integrity is disturbed, its self-regenerative capacity is lost. The available treatments are based on bone grafts and other bone substitutes which…possess several limitations. Herein, a new approach to mimic the extracellular matrix of bone and cellular microenvironment was developed in this work. Therefore, an electrospinning apparatus was used to produce poly(¿-caprolactone), polyethylene oxide-sodium alginate and poly(vinyl)pirrolidone nanofibers. Subsequently, the same procedure was used for coating the alginate scaffold. In addition, poly(¿-caprolactone) electrospun nanofiber membranes were also produced and evaluated for phase separation applications. Membranes specific properties, such as pore size, fibers diameter and surface interactions were studied. The biological properties of the coated scaffolds were evaluated through in vitro cytotoxicity assays. The results showed that all the coated scaffolds had their biological performance improved. The membranes showed to be good candidates for phase separation area.

The SVM employs non-linear deterministic multi-period optimization and produces time-series of optimal water allocations, storages and flows throughout the water resource network and for the entire modeled time-horizon. The SVM shows potential water management and economic benefits in managing both surface and groundwater conjunctively while groundwater resources used for water storage can reduce the impacts of climate change on California's water resources.

We explored the effectiveness of acupressure for the treatment of insomnia and we want to show that the acupressure treatment is feasible also in el…derly resident patients. We enrolled institutionalized patients suffering from Alzheimer s disease with mild cognitive impairment and insomnia. A daily acupressure on HT7 point was performed for a 8-week period. We administered the following scales: the mini mental state examination, the global deterioration scale, the neuropsychiatric inventory, the state-trait-anxiety inventory, the activity daily living and the instrumental activity daily living, the global health quality of life, and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index. After receiving the acupressure treatment, patients saw a significant decrease of sleep disorders. The number of hours of effective sleep was perceived as increased. The time necessary to fall asleep decreased significantly and also the quality of sleep increased. Additionally, also the quality of life was bettered. Sedative drugs have been reduced in all patients enrolled in the study. 56 pp. Englisch.

Advanced diagnostic techniques and laser-based therapeutic techniques have been developed. A new approach based on image holography is applied for dental deformation measurement. The advantages of this technique compare to existing techniques are shown. Imaging and deformation measurement of in-plane and out-plane deformations is performed using the interferometric fringes. Interferograms obtained by holographic-based techniques are shown. The imaging technique, based on optical implementation of moments as to our best knowledge, is introduced for the first time in biomedical applications. In addition to this Fourier Transform of far Field diffraction technique is introduced as well. A simple and robust technique based on the Moiré phenomenon is applied. Using Moire fringes generated by two gratings and their projection on the object to be analyzed, contours and 3-D information are obtained. 72 pp. Englisch.

The research was directed at two categories of populations in the Kibera Slums, in Kenya: 1) the unemployed poor, with youth accounting for 45%; 2) another urban group, wherein a substantial proportion of the poor are educated and employed, but do not possess the up-graded skills to attract any but the most basic wages, failing to guarantee livelihoods above the poverty line. The author examined the method and languages through which the poor prefer to access information, how it is used, and whether it makes a difference in their lives, especially in decision making. The materials examined are from KIPPRA, IPAR, IDS and AERC. The study recommends that the government encourage institutions to repackage research information so as to reach as many poor people as possible, including the physically challenged who are among the poorest. 68 pp. Englisch.

Each of these models can generate complex solutions, including: multiple steady states, periodic oscillations, quasipe…riodic oscillations or chaos. Analysis of this equations requires the use of sophisticated mathematical methods and complex numerical algorithms. In this study these phenomena and methods of analysis were presented. Particular attention is paid to the bifurcation problems, chaotic oscillations and fractals. Different methods were presented which were used to solve above mention problems. The following concepts as: bifurcation, Lyapunov s exponent, Lyapunov s time and power spectrum were used for this purpose. Inevitably, it is the intersectionality of their gender, race, ethnicity, and social class that explains th…e variations in how they experience femininity as well as varying social contexts. Findings indicate that while the women do not feel overly oppressed by their gender, they do identify significant sources of frustration over features of it including: that femininity is enforced by parents comments about lady-like behaviors and appropriate dress, that teachers enforce rules about dress codes for girls and boy versus girl activities and that peers often police gender by conflating it with sexual orientation, i.e. a girl who dresses like a boy must be a lesbian. While the women admitted to using their attractiveness on occasion to get free drinks from males or to avoid getting a speeding ticket, they voiced mostly negative views about how the media perpetuates the notion that women must conform to narrow standards of female beauty. Apart from these complaints, the women mostly emphasize their agency in the ability to accept and reject aspects of femininity. 56 pp. Englisch.
