Il Montagné (Carcassonne, 1865-Sèvres, 1948) fu chef a Cauteret, San Remo, Monte Carlo, Parigi, dove ebbe un apprezzatissimo ristorante in rue de l' Échelle; con Gottschalk redasse il ''Larousse Gastronomique'', stampato nel 1938 e introdotto da Auguste Escoffier e Philéas Gilbert e fu autore di una ventina di altre pregiate opere gastronomiche. Contemporary calf, spine richly gilt and with title label, r.e., marbled endpapers. Binding lightly rubbed, internally fine.Scarce first edition. It is dedicated to the Corsican Revolution and the German adventurer Theodor Stephen von Neuhoff who became king of Corsica for a short period in 1736. The Revolution was a struggle for independence from the Republic of Genoa, which had ruled the island since 1284. A very rare first edition of this work devoted to an important period in Corsican history, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Baron von Neuhoff under the name Theodore I. Published two years after the Baron's election as King of Corsica, this work testifies to Europe's interest in the island and in the figure of Neuhoff, a German adventurer who became the hero of its cause. Theodore von Neuhoff (1694-1756), from the German nobility, served in the French and Swedish armies. Baron von Goertz, minister to Charles XII of Sweden, recognizing his aptitude for intrigue, sent him to Spain and England to negotiate diplomatic missions. He settled for a time in Spain, where he was promoted to the rank of colonel, before returning to France, then Portugal, the Netherlands, and Italy. In Genoa, he met exiled Corsican separatists and persuaded them that he could liberate their country from Genoese rule if he were made king of the island. Aided by the Bey of Tunis, from whom he purchased weapons, he landed in Corsica in March 1736 with troops. The islanders elected him King of Corsica, and he assumed power under the name Theodore I. Legatura coeva in pergamena rigida, titolo in oro su tassello, dorso a nervi. Prima edizione di uno dei più importanti studi d'idraulica ed ingegneria del periodo, illustrato da una bella serie d'incisioni n.t. che raffigurano condotte d'acqua, apparati scientifici, esperimenti, vasi e fontane, etc. La seconda parte è dedicata a particolari vasi e fontane da usare nei giardini. La terza parte descrive i lavori fatti intorno alla conduttura dell'Acqua di Bracciano. Opera dedicata ''alla Sacra, e Real Maestà di Giuseppe Ignazio d'Austria Re' de romani, & C.''. Fontana (1634-1714), architetto e allievo del Bernini, diresse numerosi canali e progetti di drenaggio in Italia. Bell'esemplare, nonostante qualche pagina ingiallita e frontespizio polveroso e con strappetto al margine inferiore destro, con antica nota di possesso ms.; completo delle due grandi tavole, spesso mancanti.
