Lothian, Reader (later titular Professor) in English in the University of Aberdeen announced his discovery and purchase, at the sale of an Aberdeenshire manor-house library in the late summer of 1958, of two volumes of manuscript Notes of Dr. Smiths Rhetorick Lectures. They had been part of the remainder of a once extensive collection begun in the sixteenth century by William Forbes of Tolquhoun Castle, and in the late eighteenth century the property of the Forbes- Leith family of Whitehaugh, an estate brought to the Forbeses by the marriage of Anne Leith. In September 1963 Lothian published an edition of the notes as Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres Delivered in the University of Glasgow by Adam Smith, Reported by a Student in 176263 (Nelson). Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband etwas be…rieben und verfärbt, sonst guter Zustand / Binding somewhat rubbed and discoloured, otherwise good condition. - General Introduction: Most of the essays contained in this book were not prepared for the press by Smith. They are fragments in factperhaps, as Black and Hutton suggested in the Advertisement to EPS, parts of a plan he had once formed, for giving a connected history of the liberal sciences and elegant arts. The essays are also diverse both in terms of subjectmatter and in the degree of finish they had acquired at the time of Smiths death. Yet, at the same time, there are some common elements. - Altersbedingt ve…rgilbt, Einband stellenweise leicht verfärbt, sonst guter Zustand / Yellowed due to age, binding slightly discolored in places, otherwise in good condition. - Introduction: The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smiths first book, was published in 1759 during his tenure of the Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. A second, revised edition appeared in 1761. Smith left Glasgow at the beginning of 1764. Editions 3 (1767), 4 (1774), and 5 (1781) of TMS differ little from edition 2. Edition 6, however, published shortly before Smiths death in 1790, contains very extensive additions and other significant changes. The original work arose from Smiths lectures to students. The revisions in edition 2 were largely the result of criticism from philosophically minded friends. The new material in edition 6 was the fruit of long reflection by Smith on his wide knowledge of public affairs and his equally wide reading of history. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

- Preface: In 1965 the senior editor of this volume was invited by the Adam Smith Committee of Glasgow University to write a life of Smith. Professor Mossner saw that an indispensable preliminary was an edition of the correspondence, and he prevailed on the Committee to sponsor this project, also to ask the junior editor to collaborate with him. No complete collection of the correspondence was in print, though John Raes Life of Adam Smith (1895, reprinted 1965) and W. R. Scotts Adam Smith as Student and Professor (1937) presented the letters known to the respective authors. A few other letters had appeared in periodicals. The lack of a collected edition is all the more surprising in that no extensive correspondence is involved. Our tabulation is as follows: [.] In view of these numbers, we decided to print Smiths letters and those addressed to him whose contents provided significant information about Smith, or the lives of acquaintances in his career. The remainder of the letters to Smith have been calendared (Nos. 16, 62, 211, 255, 260, 279, and 285). Certain texts were not fully available to us: Letter 220 dated September 1782 (noted in a Caxton Head Catalogue); Letter 231 addressed to William Strahan, dated 6 October 1783 (sold at the Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, on 22 October 1963); also Letter 257 addressed to Thomas Cadell, dated 14 March 1786 (sold at Sothebys on 27 October 1959). It is to be hoped that their owners will make them accessible to the scholarly world, also that the missing letters or some of them, at least, will be found. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
