Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Good. There are books with modest ambitions, and then there is Two-Stroke Ports for Power by Roy Bacon, which strides onto the scene with the energy of a man who has stared deep into an engine cylinder and decided that what it really needs is more menace . This is not a book for people who think vehicles should simply start, run, and arrive somewhere politely. No, this is a book for those who look at a machine and immediately wonder how to extract a bit more speed, a bit more noise, and quite possibly a bit more danger from it. The title alone is magnificent. Two-Stroke Ports for Power. It sounds less like a workshop manual and more like a manifesto, or perhaps an ultimatum issued to a particularly reluctant motorcycle. Roy Bacon, a name reassuringly suited to the greasy, practical business of mechanical improvement, knew exactly what his readership wanted: not vague inspiration, not philosophical reflections on transport, but hard-won guidance on how to meddle with the internal passages of a two-stroke engine in pursuit of that most noble and historically expensive goal, performance. This is tuning in the old style, before software updates and polite emissions compliance spoiled everybody?s fun. Here, power is something you carve, grind, reshape and coax out of metal with patience, nerve, and a healthy disregard for resale value. And what a wonderfully specific obsession it is. Ports. Not the glamorous bits. Not chrome, not badges, not sweeping Italian bodywork. Ports. The hidden apertures through which the whole smoky symphony of a two-stroke engine lives or dies. This is the mechanical equivalent of a book devoted entirely to improving a cupboard hinge and somehow making it thrilling. To the uninitiated it may sound impossibly niche. To the correct reader it is practically scripture. As sold by Crappy Old Books, this copy is in good condition , which feels pleasantly surprising for a title that surely spent much of its life near workbenches, oily fingers, and men saying things like ?I reckon there?s more in it yet.? One imagines it being consulted beside dismantled Villiers engines, over mugs of tea gone cold, while someone debates transfer timing with the seriousness usually reserved for constitutional law. The survival of such a book in good order suggests either remarkable care or a previous owner who was wise enough to read it before attacking the cylinder barrel. The joy of a book like this is that it belongs to a vanished world of practical, slightly unhinged expertise. A world where enthusiasts did not merely buy performance but manufactured it themselves, often by filing away expensive parts in sheds while hoping the results would be ?livelier.? There is something almost heroic about that confidence. Modern machines bristle with sensors and sealed components, muttering darkly about warranties and authorised service centres. This book comes from a more direct age, when the solution to engineering limitation was often: remove some metal and see what happens. It is also gloriously unapologetic. There is no attempt here to broaden the concept for casual readers. No chapter called ?The Joy of Motorcycling.? No lifestyle photography of handsome people in scarves. No soft-focus nonsense about freedom. It is about two-stroke ports. For power. If you do not already feel a slight quickening at those words, this may not be your spiritual home. But if you do, then welcome: your people are here, and they smell faintly of petrol. For collectors of vintage motoring and motorcycle literature, it is a splendid thing. For engineers, tinkerers, shed philosophers and anyone who enjoys the sternly practical charm of mid-century specialist publishing, it is even better. There is a particular pleasure in books that assume the reader is serious, competent, and willing to spend a weekend making a machine objectively less sensible in pursuit of a subjective improvement in exhilaration. And of course it is faintly ironic now, because the whole enterprise feels gloriously anti-modern. Today performance comes wrapped in finance packages, traction control and marketing videos featuring drones over mountain roads. Back then, performance could begin with a paperback, some workshop courage, and the conviction that a few internal alterations might transform an ordinary engine into something thrilling, furious, and only intermittently reliable. That is not progress exactly, but it is certainly character. So this is more than just a technical manual. It is a small, sturdy relic from the high church of mechanical optimism: the belief that with enough knowledge, enough patience, and perhaps an inadvisable amount of grinding, the world can be made faster. Two-Stroke Ports for Power does not merely sit on a shelf; it radiates intent. It suggests that machinery is there to be improved, that power is there to be found, and that subtlety is, at best, optional. In short, this is a wonderfully focused, gloriously unfashionable, faintly combustible slice of engineering enthusiasm from a time when the route to happiness often involved a smoky exhaust note and a manual telling you exactly where to start filing. Crappy Old Books is proud to offer it to the sort of reader who understands that true sophistication sometimes begins with a two-stroke engine and an extremely specific grudge against factory settings. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. Scarce: this copy is from the library of a classic bike enthusiast who used to own a Norton. It's a maintenance manual and instruction book for Norton models 50, ES2, 88, 99, 650, Sports Specials, 750 Atlas, 750 Scrambler (pages 2 to 87) and a manual for the Jubilee, Navigator, Electra, 88, 99, 650 SS, 750 Atlas, 750 G15 CS (pages 88 to 173). Crammed with detailed information, useful advice, and lots of helpful illustrations and photographs. The text sensibly ranges between urging great precision (for example, 'First ensure that the point gap for both cylinders is between .014" to .016" at full separation') to adopting a more basic British attitude ('If the joint is tight a light blow beneath the exhaust port with a mallet or a block of wood should effectively release it'). It's a good book, that has clearly been used in the past for its intended purpose in bike work. Yellowy-orange covered, published by Lodgemark Press Limited, not dated but probably from around 1975. Compiled by F W Neill, and written with the co-operation of Norton Villiers Limited. No markings to the text, save for a price written many years ago in biro on the title page. It's still solidly bound, though getting a little bit tender at the bottom of the spread between pages 50-51. There's some fraying at the top and bottom of the spine, along with some minor dog-earing, some creasing and other marks and signs of usage (for example, a brown thumb-sized mark to the very outer edge of some pages when viewed as a block, some brownish lines fanning out across part of the back cover). But still a good copy, and the crucial text is clean throughout.
