He swiftly became a master of the erotic and macabre, but the imagery he used was matched by a technical brilliance which anticipated many of the later developments of modernism. His compositions are often daringly abstract, and he exercised an important influence on artists as diverse as Picasso and Munch, Klee, Kandinsky and Bakst. Beardsley successfully united the tradition of western manuscript illumination with eastern printmaking, effectively blending the Celtic and the Japanese in a robust new style. The stories collected in this edition have been reset in a modern typeface, but retain every detail - content, spelling and orthography - of the originals in order to preserve the flavour of the time and the nature of Ebbutt's writing. Johns Matthews has written an introductory essay to each story, providing the background, context and relevant historical or mythological origins of the tales. A selection of the original illustrations has also been included to show the pictorial style used at the time. These have been supplemented by new colour plates by Peter Komarnyckyj.…
