Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Clean, tight, unmarked; name on ffep; otherwise absolute minimal wear; appears unread; First published in 1910 and later revised to provide a complete history up to 1918. As Mr. McClellan demonstrates in his introduction to this edition, the true stories of police bravery, achievement and sacrif…ice need no embellishment; the episodes he retells are more glorious, simply for having happened, than any legend or fiction could be. And Riders of the Plains does justice to the past, to the "common and uncommon men" who actually served in the unique force that has made Canada synonymous with the Mounted Police the world over.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Fine. Reprint. SOLITARY RAMBLES and Adventures of a Hunter in the Praries. John Palliser. M. G. Hurtig Ltd., Edmonton 326pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is bound in apple green cloth covered boards with black titling to the spine. The text block is bright and tight with no markings. A dustwrapper is not…present. This edition was the first reprint since 1856 and is a facsimile of the original first edition. John Palliser (29 January 1817 - 18 August 1887) was an Irish-born geographer and explorer. Following his service in the Waterford Militia and hunting excursions to the North American prairies, he led the British North American Exploring Expedition which investigated the geography, climate and ecology of western Canada. From 1839 to 1863, Palliser served in the Waterford Militia, eventually with the rank of captain. He was also sheriff of Waterford. During a hunting expedition in British North America in 1847, Palliser wrote Solitary Rambles and Adventures of a Hunter in the Prairies, first published in 1853. He travelled back to British North America as leader of the British North American Exploring Expedition, which travelled over the uncharted regions of the far west between 1857 and 1861. He made a topographical delimitation of the boundary between British North America and the United States, from Lake Superior to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. He was assisted by astronomer Lieutenant Thomas Blakiston of the Royal Artillery, botanist Eugène Bourgeau and geologist Dr James Hector. The American west of the early 19th century was a vast land, largely unexplored and frequented by nomadic Indians and hardy fur traders. It was a land where most people came for a purpose, the Indians because it was their home, the traders because there were huge profits to be made. But it was also a land that drew the curious and adventurous simply because it was such a wild and forbidding place. John Palliser, although famous today as an explorer, was really one of those adventurers. He was not a scintist in the true sinse of the word but a sportsman who had a desire to see the unknown. Palliser was a man who simply wanted to pick up his rifle and wander into unfamiliar lands for the sheer enjoyment of his sport. Ref T4.
