After studying at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Tew joined the Indian Civil Service so that he could fish for mahseer. He stayed in Burma for twenty-five years, returning to fish for trout in England. This book offers a unique insight into angling during and between two world wars and is enhanced by additional commentary, from his late daughter, the respected anthropologist, Professor Mary Douglas (1921-2007)." Chapters include: The idea of the angler; The angler in Burma; The way of a trout with a fly; Artificial flies; Care of the river; The angler at home; The myth of the sporting fish - an anthropologist's view by Mary Douglas.
