This unique large rail, was at the very brink of extinction with just 15 individuals found in 1980, when bold and risky actions were taken to save it. The book begins with the discovery and ecology of Lord Howe Island. It then details the history of the Woodhen, its place among the rails and their evolution of flightlessness, the planning, implementation and trials, tribulations and successes of the captive breeding programme and the way in which the wild population recovered. The ecology, behaviour and breeding biology of this unique flightless island rail are also discussed. The text is accompanied by numerous photographs and drawings. This is a story of survival, yet the bird remains highly endangered as it is under constant threat, which could tip it over the brink and to extinction. This book provides gripping insights into the potential for both losing and saving vertebrate species.

This book offers a quick and accessible guide to using SPSS predictive analytics software and provides a general approach to solving problems using statistical tests. It is comprehensive in terms of the tests covered and the applied settings it refers to, while at the same time being short and easy to understand. Whether you are a beginner or an intermediate level test user, this book will help you to analyse different types of data in applied settings. It will also give you the confidence to use other statistical software and to extend your expertise to more specific scientific settings as required. Examples are given from agriculture, arboriculture, biology, computer science, ecology, engineering, farming and farm management, hydrology, medicine, ophthalmology, pharmacology, physiotherapy, spectroscopy, sports science, audiology and epidemiology.

Aggiungi al carrelloWilliam T. Cooper. (illustratore). Octavo, paperback,272 pp.,colour illustrations, text illustrations, maps. This beautifully illustrated field guide covers 504 of the most common fruiting plants found in Australia's eastern rainforests, as well as a few species that are rare in the wild but generally well-known. These spectacular plants can be seen from Cape York to Victoria, with some species also found in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and overseas. Rainforest fruits are often beautifully coloured, and in this guide the species are arranged by colour of ripe fruit, then by size and form. Five broad categories â" pink to purple, blue to black, yellow and orange to red, green to brown, and white â" allow people with even limited botanical knowledge to identify rainforest fruits. This field guide includes stunning artwork by Australia's leading natural history artist, William T. Cooper. It will be sought not just by bushwalkers and natural history enthusiasts, but also by those who admire botanical art at its best. AUTHOR INFORMATION Wendy Cooper is the author of two previous titles specialising in fruits of the Australian rainforest. She received a Cassowary Award from The Wet Tropics Management Authority in recognition of her second book Fruits of the Australian Tropical Rainforest [stock id 20158]. As a Research Associate at the Australian Tropical Herbarium she is involved in taxonomic studies of selected rainforest genera. William T Cooper AO is Australiaâs leading natural history artist. In 1990 he was awarded the Philadelphia Academy of Science (USA) Gold Medal, and in 1994 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his contribution to art and to ornithology.

Aggiungi al carrelloQuarto, laminated boards,484 pp.,colour photographs. The first volume of a three volume set, this book provides a general introduction to the Australian Cerambycidae with sections on biology, phylogeny and morphology of adult and larvae, followed by the keys to the subfamilies and an overview of the 74 genera of the subfamily Lamiinae occurring in Australia. All Lamiinae genera are diagnosed, described and illustrated and an illustrated key to their identification is provided. A full listing of all included Australian species with synonymies and bibliographic citations is also included. Longhorn Beetles (Cerambycidae) are one of the most easily recognised groups of beetles, a family that worldwide encompasses over 33,000 species in 5,200 genera. With over 1,400 species classified in 300 genera, this is the sixth largest among 117 beetle families in Australia. These beetles often attack and kill living forest or orchard trees and develop in construction timber (like European House borer, introduced to WA), causing serious damages. Virtually all Cerambycidae feed on living or dead plant tissues and play a significant role in all terrestrial environments where plants are found. Larvae often utilise damaged or dead trees for their development, and through feeding on rotten wood form an important element of the saproxylic fauna, speeding energy circulation in these habitats. Many species are listed as quarantine pests because of their destructive role to the timber industry. Volume two see[36656] and volume three [36657].
