This book is a response to the urgent need of policy oriented socio-ecological research, profoundly based on empirical evidence. Socio-environmental patterns and political responses are compared through the use of case studies analyzing a range of pressures to biodiversity. Aquatic bioinvasions in the Ebro River and Lake Izabal exemplify socio-environmental processes linked to river basins. Inspired by ecological economics, methodologies employed range from multi-criteria evaluation and participatory techniques to social network analysis, valuation of environmental services, scenario modelling and historical analysis. The authors have uniquely explored case-study-based research for socio-economic analyses of biodiversity risks. This is the first issue of ZooKeys devoted to taxonomy of the Crustacea, specifically crustaceans from the Southern Hemisphere, with contributions describing new taxa from Australia, New Caledonia, the Tasman Sea, Fiji, Madagascar and Antarctica. The issue comprises six papers on the Peracarida, and one each on Decapoda and Spinicaudata, describing four new genera, 12 new species, and new diagnoses to a further four genera. The first occurrence of the Eurasian clam shrimp Eoleptestheria ticinensis in Australia, is reported. There are three isopod contributions, two describing new species and new genera of deep-water Serolidae from Australia and the tropical southwestern Pacific, the third describing a new genus and new species of Anthuroidea from Australian coral reefs. One paper revises the amphipod genus Epimeria describing two species, one new, from Antarctic waters of the Ross and Weddell Seas. Two contributions on the Tanaidacea, describe new species from tropical Australia. The remaining paper describes a new species of freshwater crab (Family Potamonautidae) from Madagascar. …

Yuri Ivanovich Chernov is one of the greatest modern experts in ecology and biogeography, Arctic regions in particular, not only in Russia but globally. His main monographs are "Nature Zonation and Terrestrial Animal Life" (1975), "Structure of the Animal Population of the Subarctic" (1978) and "Life of the Tundra" (1980), all in Russian. The latter book was later published in English as "The Living Tundra" (1985) with Cambridge University Press and, together with the second edition, for 20 years became the only truly indispensable manual of tundra science in the world. In the present collection of papers, some of Y. I. Chernov's students or followers attempt to reflect upon a number of the synecological and biogeographical paradigms he advanced. The constituent papers seem to unite their authors' urges towards arriving from facts to a phenomenon, and from phenomena to patterns, this being so characteristic to the way of thinking of Yuri Ivanovich himself.
