Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Octavo - VG+/NF - Midnight blue boards quarterbound in a black backstrip with shiny silver foil lettering on the spine. Book has a very slight bumping at the head and tail of the spine. Loses most of its points for fingerprints and some smudges o…n the boards from handling - presumably the previous owner took off the jacket to read it. White endpapers. Binding is straight and tight. Pages are all clean, white, and crisp. 403 pages. Dust Jacket - has a trace of rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and at the extreme tips of the outside corners - upper and lower edges otherwise sharp. Not perfect, but a tight, internally clean, reasonably attractive copy of Coates's novel. Author probably best known for his nonfiction.

DJ has wear, tears, chips, and soiling. Inscribed by the author (Gaston) on the fep. Inscription reads "12-15-02 :To Virginia Vrein Good… health & God bless. You have a special friend to give the gift of health. Marilyn Hughes Gaston, M.D. Ink notation inside the front cover. Foreword by Joycelyn Elders. Marilyn Hughes Gaston (born in 1939) is a physician and researcher. She was the first black woman to direct the Bureau of Primary Health Care in the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. She is most famous for her work studying sickle cell disease (SCD). Gaston also worked to bring affordable health care to impoverished families and was the first black woman to direct a public health service bureau (Bureau of Primary Health Care in the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration) of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Through this program, with only a 5-million-dollar budget, she was able to bring impoverished families the opportunity to have access to medical workers, medical supplies, and the facilities that an average American is guaranteed. The program also granted medical care to elders, pregnant women, and new immigrants. Gaston received many awards in her lifetime, including the National Medical Association (NMA's) Lifetime Achievement Award, every honor awarded by the Public Health Service, and even has Marilyn Hughes Gaston Day celebrated each year in Cincinnati and in Lincoln Heights, Ohio. Today seven million African American women are living in their prime, experiencing the joys, the challenges, and the opportunities of middle age. Now, at last, here is the book that specifically addresses our total health needs--physical, emotional, and spiritual. Written by a distinguished physician and clinical psychologist, Prime Time is the first complete guide that empowers us to take charge of our lives and attain the well-being we deserve. In many ways, it's true that we are better off today than our foremothers were: We earn more money, command more respect. Yet in spite of these advances, we still experience more chronic health problems, endure more stress, and live shorter lives than women of other races. That's why Prime Time is both urgent and essential. This groundbreaking book not only lays out a detailed, practical plan for overall healing and for maintaining wellness, it also addresses the underlying attitudes and assumptions that lead so many of us to neglect ourselves and undermine our own health. It's time for us as African American women at midlife to start putting ourselves first. We can save our own lives and stop ourselves from dying too soon. To do this, we each need to acquire up-to-the-minute information about our unique health concerns, adjust our diet and exercise program, and use the "power of prevention" to improve the quality of daily life. Prime Time helps you do all this and more by combining both traditional medicine and a holistic approach. It covers the full range of health options you can incorporate into your life, starting now--including self-tests and quizzes that reveal your health profile and vital tips on dealing with the often-overwhelming health-care system. A central section on the Big Four--heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes--explores why black women run a high risk of developing these conditions, why they so often go undetected and untreated, and what we can do about them. Prime Time also deals powerfully and directly with the psychological and spiritual issues that stand in the way of our true well-being. Historically, African American women have been expected to function as "strong black women" to overcome the harsh realities with which we've been confronted. Anger and "attitude" have often become part of our protective shield. Prime Time provides sensible, usable, and even enjoyable methods you can employ to overcome anxiety and other negative moods, channel anger in life-affirming ways, and find "Prime Time Sisters" to share this wonderful journey with you. Comprehensive, straight-talking, and grounded in science and spiritual truth, Prime Time is at once a guide to total health in middle age and a celebration of the strength, wisdom, and beauty of African American women in their second half of life. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. PU, Lu [285] pp. Lee Publishers Group, Inc. and New World Press 1981 11 1/4" x 9" Rich in tradition and history, the art of batik has been a deeply integrated facet of Chinese folk art for over 2,000 years. Using molten beeswax, skilled artisans paint pattern…s onto white cloth, which is then dipped into indigo dye. When the wax is removed with boiling water, unique designs of great harmony and beauty remain. The themes depicted in batik decoration have a strong native flavor, and are distinctive of the Chinese provinces and districts where they were created. In Huangping, mountains, trees, and birds are represented. In the Miao district, the concentration is on flowers and butterflies, while in the Yunnan Province, designs of peacocks, monkeys, and elephants abound. In this stunning pictorial archive, more than 110 authentic designs have been carefully reproduced from a rare, early collection of batik art. Collected from the remote areas of China's southwestern provinces, each decorative pattern is rich in beauty and meaning. This royalty-free volume will be an invaluable resource for artists, designers, craftspeople, and any lover of traditional Chinese folk art.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Fine unread condition off-white boards, red spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication and About the Author. A small difficult to see 1/16th inch nick at the upper front right j…acket tip. Signed, inscribed, and dated (4/3/99) by Rose Marie Toussaint, M.D. with blue pen on the blank first free front endpaper AND also signed and dated (4/3/99) by Rose Marie Toussaint, M.D. on the full title page. "When people ask, "How did you get here?" I know they are really asking, "How did you, female of color from Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, get here?" Dr. Rose-Marie Toussaint is unique - a young black woman surgeon specializing in liver and kidney transplants at a major university hospital. How did she get there? In this amazing book Toussaint tells us. Her inspiring story starts when a voodoo priest predicts she will grow up to be a physician, then chronicles her rise to the pinnacle of her profession. Rose-Marie's family struggled not only with her parents' chaotic marriage, but with the seismic changes that were beginning to grip their homeland. When the Toussaints emigrated to Miami, Rose-Marie immersed herself in science and math classes, and her dream of becoming a doctor began to take shape. But the road to her dream was littered with obstacles: getting into college, getting into medical school, and surviving the grueling, soul-crushing rigors that test every surgeon in the making. Add to that Dr. Toussaint's status as a black female in white male dominated institutions and one can only admire the courage, fortitude, and determination that propelled her to obtain her M.D. - with some help from a few miracles along the way. As a surgeon, it was her turn to become a miracle worker - for her patients. Dr. Toussaint takes us into hospital rooms to meet desperate patients praying for a life-giving organ, and into the OR to observe the wonder of transplantation. She vividly brings to life the breakneck race against time to prepare transplant patients when an organ suddenly becomes available, the long hours of surgery - sometimes more than twenty - that both doctor and patient must endure. And she never forgets that for every life she saves another has been lost. This is a book full of miracles - not least, Rose-Marie Toussaint's own luminous spirit, which lights up every page. To share her journey is a rare opportunity to experience the faith and resilience of a woman dedicated to making miracles happen." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
