Soft cover. Condizione: New. 33 pages : 24 cm. In 2005 the Birkeland Lecture was included in a one day seminar organized as part of the celebration of Hydro's (and Yara's) 100 years anniversary. Apart from this anniversary, 2005 was also a special year since it was decreed as the World Year of Physics by the United Nations, and…Kristian Birkeland was honored by the Norwegian Committee to represent Norwegian physics and the Norwegian physicists in this year. Hence the seminar was also a celebration of the person Kristian Birkeland, who probably is the internationally best known Norwegian physicist. The topic for the seminar was Kristian Birkeland as scientist, innovator and industry founder, and Dr. William J. Burke was invited to speak about Kristian Birkeland's message from the Sun - its meaning then and now.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 104 pages. Norwegian exhibits several possessive constructions. An NP internal possessor can be linked to the head noun in different ways, and it can occupy a prenominal or postnominal position. This book describes the most common possessive constructions in written and spoken Norwegian, and analyzes… the various types. The theoretical framework is the Government and Binding (GB) Theory. GB Theory is a branch of transformational grammar, developed by Noam Chomsky and other linguists from 1980 and onwards. Especially during these last years, studies of Scandinavian languages have contributed a lot to the development of the theory and to a better understanding of the nature of natural languages. The analyses of the possessive constructions presented here, shows both that GB Theory is a useful tool for gaining insights into the structure of Norwegian, and that some modifications of the theory are needed when these constructions are considered. Soft cover. Condizione: New. 94 pages ; 21 cm. Apophaticism in Theology and LiteratureThe five essays collected in this volume are all concerned with ambiguity in the role of language. On the one hand it limits and restricts a subject, on the other hand it is our fundamental means of explaining or representing that same subject…matter. Is not the only alternative silence? Or does silence rather represent a collapse of meaning? Consciousness of the inadequacy or limitation of language in expressing truth or ultimate meaning - whether it be of a theological, philosophical or literary nature - is closely related to the concept of apophaticism: an apophatic attitude to language involves an attempt to transcend language. Three of the essays focus on Christian authors of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, two are concerned with modern writers. Through ample use of examples the contributors show how poets as well as writers of theological treatises struggle in their different ways with these dilemmas of representation.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 132 pages ; 21 cm. Names of Islamic groups in Bulgaria (Turks, Pomaks, Turkish Gypsies and Tatars) have been subjected to a number of renaming campaigns during this century, the last of these (1984-85) provoking a massive exodus of more than 300,000 Bulgarian Turks, Pomaks and Roma ( Gypsies ) to Tur…key in June - July 1989, and precipitating the political changes in the country in November of the same year. The book presents a systematic analysis of the name behaviour of a Bulgarian Muslim (Pomak) group after changes in Bulgarian name laws were introduced in 1990. The material is based on field studies carried out by an international research team in 1990-1992. The book also touches on aspects of Turkish and Roma ( Gypsy ) name behaviour after the changes of 1989.Tromsø Studies in Linguistics 15.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 64 pages : illustrations (chiefly colour) ; 24 cm. In a seminal lecture, Osborn Bergin (one of the great editors of the genre) expressed his regret that the horizons of the poets had not been 'widened by the freshening influences of the Renaissance' and this has in some measure set the tone for futur…e assessments of the genre. In an attempt to redress the balance, I recently examined a short poem by Giolla Brighde Ó hEódhasa and demonstrated how it drew on sound humanist principles in order to address fundamental reformation and counter-reformation issues. And in the present talk, I wish to build on this by looking at two other poems by the same poet which cannot be understood, I will contend, unless they are placed firmly within the context of Renaissance and humanist moral and ethical thinking.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 127 pages. This volume of Tromsø Studies in Linguistics deals with theoretical and practical aspects of doctor-patient communication analysis. Two different and much used approaches to the analysis of doctor-patient communication are compared and contrasted, one social psychological (Bales' Interacti…on Process Analysis/Byrne and Long's method), the other sociolinguistic (Conversation Analysis). The discussion emphasises central themes in doctor-patient communication research, such as power relations and outcomebased research. In addition, various approaches to the collecting, coding and analysing of data are discussed. Rolf Wynn (born 1968) is now finishing medical school. He has previously (1993) obtained a cand. philol. degree in English (linguistics) and has now received a grant to do a PhD thesis within the field of doctor-patient communication analysis. Soft cover. Condizione: New. A second sequel to the Marstrander lecture. Description: 81 pages : colour illustrations ; 24 cm. The aims of this libellus are essentially threefold. In its latter part, I wish to provide a critique of Giolla Brighde Ó hEódhasa's Truagh cor chloinne hÁdhaimh, a poem which casts light on the philosop…hical and psychological assumptions of its age and offers fascinating insights into the author's compositional and translational techniques. The poem offers a rendering of a Latin original that belongs to the genre known as Contemptus Mundi or 'Contempt for the world', in the Irish tradition Tarcaisne an tSaoghail. It is, moreover, a piece that demonstrates Giolla Brighde's unsurpassed ability to render the spirit of an original with remarkable compression, combining fidelity of rendition with, when necessary, a degree of judicious licence. Before doing so, however, I wish to elucidate the moral and intellectual context of that poem by bringing into focus pertinent sections of Truagh liomsa, a chompáin, do chor, another of Giolla Brighde's poems which, with a total of ninety verses, is rather too lengthy for close exposition here; the principal connection between these two poems being the combined light they shed on Northern Renaissance views of the human condition. The overall purpose of the work is, I should add, to explore the extent to which the mind of this Irish poet was moulded by the philosophical thinking of his age.

Stress as an Inflectional Formative in Russian Noun Paradigms and Bybee's Cognitive Morphology This monograph is devoted to mobile stress patterns in contemporary Russian noun inflection. A classification model is proposed, and predictability of membership in all classes is given a detaile…d discussion on the basis of data obtained from written sources, informants and psycholinguistic experiments with nonsense words. The framework employed in the book is Joan L. Bybee's conception of cognitive morphology. The model's capacity for accounting for the generalizations about stress is evaluated by comparison with more traditional approaches to morphology, such as Item and Arrangement, Item and Process, Word and Paradigm, and what may be called Priscianic Morphology. Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 120 pages ; 22 cm. Within the last two hundred years critical scholarship has come to recognise that chapters 40-55 of the Old Testament Book of Isaiah do not go back to the same milieu and time as chapters 1-39, but were written in Babylonia during the period of the so-…called Babylonian exile, following Nebuchadnezzar s conquest of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. The author of the present monograph has previously on several occasions challenged the view that Isa 40-55 originated in Babylonia and has pointed to Palestine as the most likely background for this important Biblical text. The main conclusion of this new study is that none of the l9th century arguments (still prevailing in recent scholarship) in favour of a Babylonian setting of Isa 40-55 are acceptable today. The "Babylonian Isaiah", consequently, provides us with an illustrating example of how a thesis has continued to have a strong influence long after the presuppositions which once led its birth have ceased to be valid. Since the placing of chapters 40-55 of the Book of Isaiah in a Babylonian rather than a Palestinian context has also had a profound effect on how this text should be understood, The Babylonian Captivity of the Book of Isaiah represents a much needed and long overdue corrective to the whole Second Isaian debate. Hans M. Barstad is Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Oslo and has published widely on the Hebrew Bible and the ancient Near East. His books include The Religious Polemics of Amos. Leiden, 1984, A Way In the Wilderness. The "Second Exodus" in the Message of Second Isaiah. Manchester, 1989, and The Myth of the Empty Land. Soft cover. Condizione: New. vi, 165, [1] pages ; 21 cm. The present study investigates the acquisition of so-called functional categories in English children between the ages of two and three. The study is carried out within the generative framework and takes as its starting-point Radford's (1988; 1990) hypothesis that initial…child grammars are afunctional. The present work argues in favour of the Weak Continuity Hypothesis. According to this approach to language development, the X-bar system is part of Universal Grammar, while the acquisition of functional categories has to be triggered. The issue of triggers is extensively discussed in the study, and it is argued that, due to the lack of inflectional morphology in English, the development of functional categories is initially triggered by free rather than bound morphemes in this language. Furthermore, it is proposed that the acquisition of functional categories does not only involve a triggering mechanism of the kind discussed in the present study, but also a setting of parameters in the form of determining the strength of the N- and V-features associated with these categories (in the sense of Chomsky, 1992).Tromsø Studies in Linguistics 17.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 129 p. ; 24 cm. Diseases do not naturally respect boundaries. Although their origins may be local, their diffusion often becomes international, borne by trade, war and other modes of human or animal contact. Combatting disease or promoting health is thus an international and a local matter. In the tw…entieth century international health organizations, both public and private, have greatly influenced the formulation of state health policies throughout the world. The day-to-day practice of health care, however, is carried out at the local level. International and local approaches to health and health care thus interact dynamically, and the relationship is characterized by a variety of tensions. This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the 2010 Bergen workshop on the history of health and medicine, organized by the Department of Archeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion at the University of Bergen. The contributions discuss the activities of the League of Nations Health Organization and the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation; the role of public health experts in Spain; aspects of health care for the mentally ill in Britain, Germany and Norway; the medical "otherness" of women; and the international and local response to bacterial invasion and colonization.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 56 pages : illustrations. This publication presents the most important features of the folk-life artist Carl Gustaf Bernhardson's paintings to an international audience and places the paintings in their social and cultural context. The life style and world of ideas among Bohuslän's coastal inhabitants… of past ages have been visualized for posterity in these many paintings by an artist who knew this culture intimately. His own world of ideas, largely unknown during his lifetime, has now become accessible due to the many notebooks and poems that he left at his death. Women, environmental commitments, a longing for freedom, a belief in fate and a lofty self-image have shown themselves to be essential features of his inner world. Anders Gustavsson, (1940-), professor of cultural history at the Department of Cultural Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo, 1997-2010 and senior professor since 2011. PhD from the University of Lund, 1972, then reader in ethnology at Lund, part time also in Gothenburg and Bergen; professor of ethnology, University of Uppsala, 1987-1997. His research has concerned popular religion, popular movements with emphasis on temperance and revivalistic movements, coastal culture, cultural meetings, tourism, border cultures, rites of passage, gravestone symbolism, memorial internet websites, popular paintings, fieldwork methodology.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 67 pp. The objective of this book is to study grave memorials as cultural expressions of the time in which they were erected. The period under study extends from the early 1800s, when permanent grave memorials began to be erected at cemeteries in Sweden, to the 1900's. The analysis concentrates on the… following aspects of the topic: materials, social differences, gender, age, view on life/afterlife, protection, anonymity-collectivity- individuality. As a result of the analysis of messages on grave memorials, the author also addresses cultural heritage issues: what should be selected and defined as cultural heritage and thus should be preserved and made available for posterity.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 205 pages. The three tracts presented in this volume are the most certain to be Wyclif's of all the sixty or more earlier attributed to him. They are all dated in the Middle English Dictionary (MED) within his lifetime, the earliest -c1378, the latest -c1384; they all contain subject-matter very much… connected with his ideas and way of thinking; and they all have linguistic features that single him out, when taken together, as the author of the texts. The first of the three, De Officio Pastorali (O-Pastor for short), was edited by F. D. Matthew for the Early English Text Society (EETS) in 1880 from MS Ashburnham XXVII (now in the John Rylands Library Manchester). This is the only known copy of the text. The second tract, De Papa (Papa for short), from c1380 (MED), was also edited by Matthew in the same volume as O-Pastor from the same MS. No other known copy of the text exists. The third and last of the tracts, Of the Church and Her Members (Church for short), was edited by Thomas Arnold in Select English Works by Wyclif (Oxford University Press 1869-71) from MS Bodley 788. Four other copies of the text are known, one in Dublin, one in Leicester, two in London. Variants from these four will be found with the text. Studia Anglistica Norvegica 5.

In this type of construction Present English (i.e. 20th-century English) seems to prefer adverbs; it appears, however, that historically other elements are used as well. It has been cla…imed that the Early Modern English period (c. 1500-1700) is generally a transitional period in terms of adverbial usage. The present study tries to determine whether Early Modern English adverb usage is unstable with respect to the function in question. The book also dicusses how the relevant function is realized in Present Norwegian, as well as in some earlier types of English. Additionally, topics such as adverbial orientation and distribution are touched upon, and these two factors in combination are claimed to partly explain the adverbialization of the construction discussed. Kristin Killie was born in 1967. In 1993 she received her cand. philol. degree (in English) from the University of Tromsø, where she is presently working. Tromsø Studies in Linguistics 13.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 145 pages ; 24 cm. This book discusses three features of 17th century English, viz initial adverbial clauses, conjuncts and the noun phrase. All three chapters make use of the material collected for Bækken 2003, which is a corpus study based on approximately 2,500 pages of running text, giving just u…nder 11,000 examples collected from three different parts of the 17th century and four different text categories, viz 'descriptive prose', 'religious prose', 'letters' and 'history'. The two chapters concerned with adverbials testify to a longitudinal increase in the use of sentence- initial elements which are only loosely connected with the rest of the sentence in which they occur. This is noticeable above all in the case of conjuncts, the use of which increases significantly across the 17th century. Of considerable interest is also the fact that in diachronic studies word order may help to distinguish between conjuncts and the category of adjuncts, the two categories being often difficult to keep apart. Also in the discussion of the noun phrase word order is an important aspect, as the results indicate that complements, which normally occur postverbally, are more likely to contain the heavier elements, while preverbal subjects will be lighter, both features in agreement with the general word order tendencies in English.

The main purpose of these studies about Sylvia Plath is to bring us back to a close reading of her poems as works of art, not primarily as specimens in an attempt to get at her character and her life. Of particular concern is to show in detail how she uses non-realistic devices, whi…ch make up an important part of her poetic profile. The author also shows how Plath?s sense of humor, so often neglected by critics, can be expressed, for example by the use of slang. One essay focuses on her as a woman poet and tests the relevance of feminist theories about socio-economic and cultural conditions for her and her predecessor Emily Dickinson?s work. A concluding essay analyses and assesses the biographical treatment of the poet and, among other things, examines how biographers have interpreted the relationship between her life and her poetry.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 230 pages : illustrations (some colour) ; 21 cm. How do oral forms that have existed for generations reinvent themselves to remain valid in a high-tech world, in which communication is affected through cell phone and email? Who owns a song that has grown over decades, in and through the voices of a c…ommunity? And what are the intellectual copyrights of a street performer when his act is posted on You Tube? These are some of the questions raised by the authors of this, the second collection of essays produced by scholars from Makerere University, as part of a continuing research project with the University of Bergen. Other writers explore issues of gender, in forms such as marriage songs and praise poetry, or in the appropriation of stories of heroic women to offer role models to young women making their way in competitive fields of activity in the new African economy. In addressing these and other issues, the writers in this collection present and preserve aspects of an oral culture of great richness and diversity, showing its continuity in the fact of the threats, and the opportunities, of unprecedented social change.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 221 pages. Valency is traditionally thought of as a property of verbs. The present work is an attempt to explore valency as a property of all kinds of linguistic signs - words, morphemes, and signs with non-phonemic expression. An important distinction is made between semantic and syntactic signs, an…d amongst semantic signs between signs with and without valency. The basic unit is the "atom", i.e. a predicate together with its actants. The structure of an atom is represented by means of eleven "valency categories". These categories reflect cases and certain related properties. More than 800 valency structures (different combinations of categories) have been identified. A large material illustrating these structures makes up the major part of this book.Lennart Lönngren (born 1942) is professor of Russian linguistics at the University of Tromsø. Special emphasis has been on studying sh…ortage situations when no alcohol was legally available or easily accessible on one side of the border but not on the other. Particularly interesting situations are times of war, alcohol prohibition, and strikes. Views on alcohol have also had a gender aspect. In the late twentieth century the economy played a crucial part in the buying trips to Sweden by Norwegians. Taste can also play a part in these trips. The significance of the economic aspect has been greatest for the producers and sellers of illegal alcohol.
