The most important and influential drawing master in eighteenth century Oxford was a German violinist, John Malchair, who for over thirty years supplemented his meagre earnings as leader of the band at the Music Room by giving drawing lessons of a kind unique for their period. Each of Malchair's drawings was seen only by a few individuals: his pupils and those who accompanied him on particular sketching expeditions, and the friends who were shown the sketchbook or portfolio afterwards. This catalogue which contains approximately 100 examples of Malchair's work is dedicated to the memory of Ian Fleming-Williams, who died on 6 March 1998, at the age of eighty-four and whose first art historical research was into the work of John Malchair and other eighteenth century drawing masters. The rise of Modernism, from the early nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth, was played out with particular intensity in France, especially in Paris where international artists were drawn by salons and dealers, the creative exchanges between poets and painters, and the bohemian atmosphere of such places as Montmartre and Montparnasse. This catalogue traces a course from Neo-Classical and Romantic artists like David, Ingres, Gericault and Delacroix, through Impressionists and Post-Impressionists like Degas, Monet and Seurat, to the ground-breaking experiments of Picasso and Braque; but it also shows that there was no straight line leading from tradition to the shock of abstraction. The story is altogether more interesting as academic artists and members of the avant-garde exchanged ideas and as rivalries developed between different schools and powerful characters. In works by Manet, Cezanne, Degas, Cassatt, van Gogh, Matisse, Leger and Picasso, this catalogue explores the artists who created Modernism and how they did it. At the heart of the story is a choice group of works by Picasso, Braque and other artists who first experimented with Cubism. This handbook describes the Jewel and discusses the many questions it raises, not least whether it was made for King Alfred the Great (871-99). The jewel has received much attention from scholars since its discovery in 1693. The Ashmolean Museum also houses many of the objects that belong to the same late Anglo-Saxon period, and they help to set the Jewel in context. Some material in other collections is included for comparison; in particular, pictures are brought together for the first time of recent discoveries that have particular relevance to the Jewel. The collection effectively began with the gift in 1964, by Arthur Mitchell, of over 3,000 prints, including a large group of wood engravings. During the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded remarkably with acquisitions of large groups of prints, often as gifts from the artists, resulted in a succession of monographic exhibitions on some of the most important wood engravers. They included John Farleigh (1986), John Buckland Wright (1990), Clare Leighton (1992), Monica Poole (1993) and Anne Desmet (1998). A key point in this period of expansion was the acquisition of a comprehensive body of work by Gertrude Hermes and Blair Hughes-Stanton in 1995 from the artists family, which resulted in a memorable exhibition organised by Katharine Eustace.
