Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First U.S. Edition, 1997. Hardcover in blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and Paladwr device, in the original pictorial dust jacket. xiv, 572 pp., extensively illustrated with historical photographs, route maps, charts, and airline genealogies; bibliography and index. The copyright page states that the work was first published in Great Britain in 1997 by Putnam Aeronautical Books and that this edition was published and distributed in the United States and Canada by Paladwr Press. Contemporary listings likewise identify the Paladwr issue as the First U.S. Edition, produced in the same year as the Putnam British first edition. An unusually substantial history of Asian commercial aviation, covering the development of airlines from the pioneering services of the 1920s through the jet age. Davies organizes the book geographically and historically across forty chapters, including Imperial and postwar India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Hong Kong and Macao, the Philippines, China, Japan, Korea and Mongolia. The numerous hand-drawn route maps are particularly useful, documenting changing networks such as Merpati Nusantara in 1977, successive Chinese airline systems, and Japan Air Lines' international network. The Smithsonian Libraries catalogue the work specifically under both commercial aeronautics history and airline history. Like New / Near Fine dust jacket. The book itself is exceptionally fresh: blue cloth clean and bright, gilt crisp, binding square and tight, and pages clean and unmarked, with virtually no evidence of use observed. The original dust jacket is Near Fine, bright and complete, with only very slight handling/edge wear and a small amount of creasing at the spine ends. Jacket is unclipped with the original $65 price. An especially attractive copy of a fairly hefty aviation reference work. R. E. G. (Ronald Edward George) Davies was particularly well positioned to produce this book: by the time it appeared he had spent decades researching commercial aviation and had served since 1983 as Air Transport Curator at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. Google Books describes Airlines of Asia as the third installment following his histories of U.S. and Latin American airlines, and the book's research reportedly involved travel throughout much of Asia and interviews with people involved in operating its airlines. There is also a nice visual-authorship detail here. Many of the maps are signed "REGD": Davies wasn't simply compiling text around commercially supplied graphics; his own hand-drawn maps form part of the book's historical documentation. The jacket takes a different approach. Its rear flap explicitly credits the cover illustration to Anthony Cowland, describing his original painting as a Boeing 777 of China Southern Airlines on final approach to runway 13 at Hong Kong. That image is especially evocative because Davies' foreword discusses the famously demanding approach to Hong Kong's then-current Kai Tak airport while anticipating its replacement by the new Chek Lap Kok airport. The jacket therefore captures the aviation world at almost exactly the moment documented by the book. Cover illustration by Anthony Cowland (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover in bright red cloth with gilt spine lettering and Paladwr Press device, in the original pictorial dust jacket retaining the $30.00 printed price. Foreword and maps by noted airline historian R. E. G. Davies; edited by J. Scott-Mandeville; typesetting/layout by Spot Color. xi, 339 pp., extensively illustrated with historic photographs, advertisements, route maps, fleet information, statistics, and index. The Smithsonian Libraries catalogues the work at xi + 339 pages and specifically classifies it under Pacific Southwest Airlines history. Kissel was unusually well placed to write the story. As his jacket biography records, he joined PSA in 1968 as Director of Public Relations, six years after founder Kenneth Friedkin's death, and worked closely with subsequent senior management. The resulting history follows PSA from Friedkin's postwar beginnings through its colorful California growth, famous "smiling" aircraft and flight-attendant culture, expansion and deregulation, and eventual absorption into USAir. The book is much more substantial than a nostalgic pictorial: it includes eight specially prepared route maps, detailed fleet tables with registrations, manufacturer serial numbers, delivery dates and dispositions, financial/passenger statistics, and an extensive index. Its usefulness as a reference is borne out by the San Diego Air & Space Museum, which names Kissel's book among the published resources complementing its archival Pacific Southwest Airlines Collection. Like New / Near Fine dust jacket. Book is exceptionally fresh: bright, clean red cloth, crisp gilt, square boards, tight binding, and clean, bright pages with no observed ownership marks, writing, or significant wear. The original jacket remains bright and glossy with strong color and only very minor handling/edge wear, principally a small touch of wear/creasing at the upper rear corner; no significant chips or tears. An unusually attractive copy. The copyright page settles this very nicely: it explicitly states "Second Printing", copyright and publication 2002. There are two particularly nice collecting angles here. First, R. E. G. Davies (1921-2011) was considerably more than a contributor of a ceremonial foreword: he was one of the important historians of commercial aviation, and here he also supplied the route maps. The book's map section traces PSA's network from its 1949 pioneer route through the final 1988 network, while the appendices document individual aircraft down to registration and serial number. That makes this a useful reference work for airline and aircraft historians as well as a corporate history. Second, the book has become something of a source document for PSA history. The independent PSA History Page explicitly lists Kissel's book among its principal sources, while the San Diego Air & Space Museum cites it alongside its archival PSA collection. The Second Printing designation also tells us something useful bibliographically: Paladwr evidently returned the title to press, suggesting that the initial printing found enough of an audience among aviation enthusiasts to warrant another run. …

This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "The story like the vital wartime link itself, stretches from the shores of the United States, down to South America, across the Atlantic, Africa, the Middle East, and on to India and finally across the forbidding, often deadly "roof of the world" the Himalayas to China. There was nothing commonplace about any of the adventures Culbert and Dawson so excellently document. There was certainly danger at times, but things to laugh at as well, as Pan American's secret wartime operations sent Americans around the world. The book is excellently illustrated with both rare photographs and publisher Ron Davies' superb maps. " (from PanAm) ; Signed by One Author. …
