Hardcover. Condizione: VG+. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG+. 1st. From the 1830s to the early 1900s NZers were frequently worried by the possibility of expansion of the Russian Empire in the South Pacific, with their country a possible target for occupation. To some degree the concern was justified, with NZ virtually defenceless, the protective Royal Navy deployed only a small force based in Australia and strength in troops was even lower. In this interesting account of a near-forgotten earlier Cold War the author approaches his topic from military, political, international perpsectives, how NZ administrations approached the problem and the extensive programme of fortifications built to protect the major ports. A fascinating look as this aspect of Pacific history. 180 pages including appendix, abbreviations list, bibliography, index, 15 b/w illustrations --- photos, art, portraits. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions. Tinted art DJ is VG+ with tiny chips spine top. Photos, Art (illustratore). …

The Rangitikei County comprised a comparatively narrow strip of territory extending inland from the Tasman Sea, south east of Wanganui, into the highlands of the central North Island and the Kaimanawa Ranges beyond Taihape and Waiouru, with terrain ranging from coastal flatland, rolling hills to rugged and mountainous country. An excellent historic coverage of the Rangitikei from pioneering, prominant personalities to prosperity. Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: VG+. No Jacket. 1st. In a naval context New Zealand had a long association with cruisters as the main fighting ships based there. This was so between the two world wars and for some years after the second. This account follows the service of ships of this class during World War Two, when they were involved in the first major naval engagement, the Battle of River Plate, to the Allied fleets standing off the shores of Japan when that country surrendered. Initially the ships involved were units of the Royal Navy, with a large number of NZers in the complement. In 1941 the Royal New Zealand Navy was officially established, withNH the ship replacing the HMS prefix with HMNZS. The major part of the book is devoted to the Achilles, Leander and Gambia, with HMS Neptune also covered. Neptune was a sister of the Achilles and Leander and was assigned to the NZ station, but \ diverted to the Mediterranean where, late in 1941 she was sunk with only one survivor. However, 150 of her crew were NZers and their loss was the heaviest in any single naval action. The author compiled a fine record of these ships, which served in virtually every theatre of the oceanic conflict. First edition of 1988. 164 pages including bibliography and index, numerous b/w photos, seven pages maps, battle charts at back. Card covers with Battle of River Plate action art illustration to front are VG+ with light crease lower front corner, internally near fine, no inscriptions or markings. Photos, Maps (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: VG+. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG+. 1st. New Zealand's cost is rugged and stormy and in the early days of settlement many ships, the main mode transport, were wrecked and it became apparant that particularly dangerous locations should be marked by lights to guide and warn mariners. Beacons and some primative lighs were positioned but it was 1850 before the fist permanent and substantial lighthouse was erected, at Pencarrow Head on the Wellington Harbour approaches. (The author records that this first light marked another first with a Mrs Bennett as its first keeper.) From that point the account follows the story of the construction, maintenance and servicing of the many subsequent lights, the upgrading of lighthouse technology to the point where the process of demanning and automating the lighthouses was under way. In this impressive study of NZ lighthouses the men, women and children who watched over the lights, almost always siutuated in lonely, isolated and tempestuous locations, are not overlooked. A worthy addition to any collection on NZ maritime history. First editioin of 1975 from Dunmore Press, 156 pages including bibliography and index.18 b/w photos. The authors have provided a comprehensive record of how, mainly locally produced horsedrawn vehicles, played their part by meeting these needs with individual or familty carriages, carts for business, commerce, agriculture, heavy haulage, timber, with passenger coaches for everyday needs. They take the development progression up to the advent of railways and mechanized road transport, which gradually replaced the horse. The book covers an aspect of pioneer days often overlooked. Commentary is backed by an impressive collection of historic photographs. No inscriptions. Blue covers with gilt spine titles. Photos, technical drawings, document reproductions (illustratore).…
