One of the first places they moved on to was a river south of the city which was Michigan Territory's only port on Lake Erie. Here the mostly French newcomers began to lay out ribbon farms on both sides of the river they called Riviere aux Raisin, after the wild grapes that grew in profusion along its banks. Even into the 21st Century the riverbanks pass through a mainly rural landscape, touching, also, the small cities of Tecumseh, Petersburg, and Monroe; the villages of Brooklyn, Manchester, Dundee, Blissfield, Deerfield, and Clinton and the sites of former settlements at Hamlin, Leroy, Raisin Center, Newburg and Cambridge Junction. This volume also covers the battles on the banks of the River Raisin against the invading British and their Indian allies in 1813, floods and other disasters along the river beginning in 1836 and power creation including five of the Ford Company's "village industries," where old mill sites were put to new uses manufactur?ng parts for automobiles. Today the focus is on clean~up and rehabilitation. A mile~by~mile survey discusses interesting history and sights along the way Years of industries and agriculture have left the river with a legacy of chemical waste which is gradually being removed. With continuing application of government funds and local efforts the lotus plants are once more blooming on the River Raisin.

The stream forms a large C shape around the metropolitan Detroit area, coming around to the west and going through Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Belleville and Flat Rock before exiting into Lake Erie at Pointe Mouillee. Early recognized as a wonderful recreation resource several of the Michigan's oldest parks and recreation areas are along its banks. The Huron~Clinton Metropolitan Authority alone administers a total of 14,375 acres of parkland along the river including Kensington Metropark, said to be the most popular park in the state. This volume includes the story of its name, early explorers Robert LaSalle and Hugh Heward, settlements along its banks, the Huron River in poetry, prose and movies, and a mile by mile trip described from the source to Lake Erie. The book is profusely illustrated with maps, old postcard views and modern photographs, with special material on the bridges of the Huron ~ then and now.
