Haase. - Name of the author handwritten on the cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: Early in his His…tory of Classical Scholarship, Wilamowitz (1982: 3) has this to say about translators: The translators also must be excluded, though they have contributed much to the dissemination of ancient ideas. As an example we need only recall Amyots Plutarch. The part played by that book in infusing the spirit of Hellenism into modem culture is infinitely more important than most scholars' work, but scholarship it is not. What a translator does may be infinitely more important than what a scholar does, yet it has no place in a history of scholarship because scholarship it is not. While no one would insist that scholarship and translation are the same, it is clear that there is some connection between them. I am not certain that anyone has taken the trouble to define it precisely, perhaps because it seems obvious enough. In the case of ancient authors at least, a certain amount of scholarship is simply prerequisite to translation. Some ancient authors would require more of it than others. So pronounced the influential, if sometimes caustic, literary historian, Ernst Robert Curtins, of the biblical epics of Late Antiquity. One possible cause for the frustration of readers like Curtins with biblical epics, whether written in Late Antiquity or later, is the all too common tendency to study them as though they were composed in isolation from each other. This paper contends that biblical epics can be better appreciated if they are read against the backdrop of the long and dynamic literary tradition to which they belong. Clearly ones delight in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is refined and deepened if one is also familiar with influential comedies like Plautus Menaechmi or Shakespeares Comedy of Errors. Something of the same sort of illumination from within a tradition can be shed in reverse, as it were. Readers of Plautus who have recently seen the Broadway show or the film will actually have difficulty reading the latter without constant reference to the former. Jh.v.Chr. vollziehen sich in der sp…ätminoischen Vasenproduktion der Stufen SM II/III A:1 bemerkenswerte Veränderungen (Popham 1967, 345; 1970, 79f; 1984, 159ff; 1994, 98f, 181f; Betancourt 1985, 163ff; Crouwel/Morris 1995). Bislang weniger gebräuchliche oder gänzlich neue Gefäßformen etablieren sich im geläufigen Repertoire und zugleich treten neue Dekorelemente auf. Zu den sich neu durchsetzenden Gefäßformen gehören amphoroide Kratere mit abgesetztem Hals (Popham 1970, 76; Betancourt 1985. 170; Kanta 1980, 273f; Mountjoy 1993, 73; Crouwel/Morris 1995, 167 mit n. 12) und halslose konische Kratere mit Bandhenkeln (Popham 1970, 76; Kanta 1980, 272f; Betancourt 1985, 170; Mountjoy 1986, 61: FS 7: 1993, 62; Crouwel/Morris 1995, 167 mit n. 13). Sie werden in den folgenden, alsbald von der festländischen Produktion dominierten Jahrzehnten im Rahmen des sog. .figuralen Vasenstils ("pictorial style") die bevorzugten Träger dieser Bildgattung (Vermeule/Karageorghis 1982; Crouwel/Morris 1995; 1996). Doch finden sich figurale Darstellungen auch auf kleineren offenen Formen, so auf bauchigen Tassen mit flachem Fuß (cf. Popham 1970, 68ff; 1984. 161ff., 181; Betancourt 1985, 151, 169; CROUWEL/MORRIS 1995, 166f), daneben gelegentlich auch auf mittelgroßen dreihenkeligen Amphoren (,piriform jar; cf. unten Kat. Nr. 7, 8), auf hohen sackförmigen Alabastren (cf. unten Kat. Nr.6) und auf zweihenkeligen Flaschen mit sphärisch-kugeligem Körper und engem Hals (,Pilgerflaschen bzw.
