Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Original 1st edition Hardcover in Jacket, Andrew Roth's The Book of 101 Books, Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century. This is the REGULAR TRADE EDITION, but comes with a clamshell case as shown in the photographs. 305 pages, index, dozens of full-color and b + w plates. Book is considered important resource for photography history and important monographs, as well as the photographers who created them. Jacket comes in protective mylar sleeve. Book and jacket are both in excellent condition, "very good plus," and probably bordering on better condition. There is slight soiling to outer page edges at bottom near corner. Very, very slight slant of spine. Then mild reference wear. Nearly imperceptible pencil price smudge on endpaper. I've had this book in the clamshell case since I bought it, so it's quite nice and looks excellent in the protective mylar sleeve. The clamshell case has rubbing and wear, but is very solid - was not issued with this trade edition and is being added to this listing for free. Overall, an excellent copy. TOO LARGE FOR EITHER INTERNATIONAL or PRIORITY SHIPPING - Sorry.

Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The history of the photographic book goes back well more than a century; the medium of photography and the book format were understood very early on to relate to each other on both technical and aesthetic levels. The examples of truly great combinations of photographic image and text, great design and typography bound together as books are numerous, and make up an impressive artistic, social, and documentary statement of the 20th century. Writer and rare book expert Andrew Roth has selected for this volume a group of 101 of the best photography books ever published: books that bring all of the elements of great bookmaking together to create, ultimately, a thing of beauty, a work of art. Mostly made up of publications in which the photographs were meant to be seen in book form, as opposed to the book being merely a repository of images, this list includes many artists and titles that will be familiar to the collector, but also not a few surprises. Chronologically, the first book is Volume One of Edward Curtis's seminal 1907 The North American Indian, the last is David LaChapelle's LaChapelle Land from 1996, and in between are books by Walker Evans and Berenice Abbott, Atget and Brassai, Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand, and many other seminal photographers from all over the world. Each book in the catalogue receives a double page spread including publication information, several image spreads, and a short text about it. The Book of 101 Books, however, is far more than simply an annotated and illustrated catalogue. Six important new essays on a variety of related topics from respected scholars, critics, and artists are included as well: here you will find Richard Benson on the history of printing techniques, Shelley Rice on the societal significance of photography books, May Castleberry on reprints, exhibitions, and keeping books alive for the public; Daido Moriyama on his personal memories of making his classic Bye Bye Photography, Dear, Neville Wakefield on the particular attributes of one of the most recent books in this group: Richard Princeis 1995 Adult Comedy Action Drama, and Jeffrey Fraenkel on the myriad perils of publishing photography books. The catalogue entries themselves are written by the well known critics Vince Aletti and David Levi Strauss. Taken together, the depth and beauty of these essays and images makes The Book of 101 Books both an essential reference and an aesthetically compelling object. EB; 12.0 X 9.9 X 1.6 inches; 305 pages.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first and only printing. Hardcover. Black paper covered boards, with rubber-like material dust jacket with blind-embossed title. Photographs and text by Robert Adams. Designed by Alexander Gelman (Design Machine, New York) and Andrew Roth. Unpaginated, with 40 duotone plates (20 in each section), beautifully printed on heavy paper by Trifolio, Verona, Italy. 8-1/4 x 9-1/4 inches. This first edition was limited to 1000 copies. Out of print. Scarce. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. From Robert Adams: "At about the time I took the pictures I read an interview with Raoul Coutard, Jean-Luc Godard's cameraman. In it Coutard noted with gratitude that 'daylight has an inhuman faculty for always being perfect.' It is one of the mercies, I believe, by which each of us is allowed to live." From the publisher "The unique prints on view were originally part of a larger portfolio which Adams published as The New West in 1974. These 40 images were not included in that publication and are presented here for the first time, sequenced in a new series titled Commercial/Residential. To coincide with the exhibition, PPP Editions in association with Roth Horowitz, has published Commercial/Residential in a limited edition of 1000 copies. This new book is a companion volume to Eden, which Roth Horowitz published in 1999, together they chart the chronology of Adams' formative work. Commercial/Residential presents two parallel and fundamental themes: the evolution of private and public space in the American west. The Commercial portfolio of 20 images is organically constructed, documenting the expansion of undeveloped landscape in Colorado, as civilization encroaches on nature. The images in the Residential portfolio are witness to the ways in which men and women personalize the new, the unknown, making it their own. Through light and a masterful ease with the medium, Adams evokes the drama in the ordinary. The pictures seem without author, as natural as a passing glance, as familiar as a snapshot.".

Thick blue and white printed stiff wrappers (published only in wraps), with die-cut thick black dust jacket with French folds, housed in a printed corrugated cardboard slipcase. Photographs by Daido Moriyama. Edited and interview with Daido Moriyama (in English and Japanese) by Andrew Roth. Essay by Neville Wakefield and text by James Baldwin (excerpted from Another Country, 1960-1962). Includes a letter from Moriyama to Andrew Roth (in Japanese with English translation, dated February 26, 2002, regarding the publishing of this body of work). Designed by Alexander Gelman, Design Machine, New York and Andrew Roth. 428 pp., with 234 black-and-white plates, beautifully printed full-bleed on heavy fine matt art paper at Trifolio, Italy. 9-3/8 x 6-1/4 inches (slipcase is 10 x 6-3/8 x 2-1/2 inches). This first edition was limited to 3000 copies. New in publisher's shrink-wrap in New dust jacket and Fine slipcase (a few minor horizontal indentations to the cardboard slipcase, else Fine). From the publisher: "In 1971, Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama took a trip to New York City with Tadanori Yokoo. He stayed at the Chelsea Hotel and spent his days in The Museum of Modern Art Photography Study Center looking at pictures taken by Weegee. He shot 100 rolls of film with a half-frame camera, yielding 70 images per roll. Some of those pictures are presented here. One of Japan's leading postwar photographers, Daido Moriyama was born in 1938 in Ikeda, a town outside of Osaka. At the age of 21 he turned to photography and moved to Tokyo to work with the eminent photographer Eikoh Hosoe. Early in his career he was introduced to the work of Andy Warhol and William Klein, and from them he learned to appreciate the harsh contrast and coarse half-tone effects of cheap publishing, raised to a positive aesthetic level. His own photographs are grainy, murky, and quickly developed, full of hard contrasts and rapid drama. other influences included the writer Jack Kerouac, the inspiration behind a seminal series of photos taken while traveling the highways near Tokyo, and author Yukio Mishima and dramatist Shuji Terayama, whose fascination with society's underworld parallels Moriyama's own. In 1974, Moriyama had his first solo exhibition, and later that year, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, included 26 of his photographs in the New Japanese Photography exhibition. More recently, in 1999, a major traveling retrospective of the photographer's work opened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.".
