Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. (price-clipped) [minimal shelfwear, agency stamps (H.N. Swanson, Inc.) on ffep and half-title page, small pieces of clear tape on both pastedowns and at edges of both jacket flaps (from where jacket was formerly affixed to pastedowns); the jacket itself is just lightly soiled]. "A fast-paced, amusing, and lyrical narrative about the life in crisis of Saul Bannerman, middle-aged merchandising director of Beauty*Pore Cosmetic Co. Solly has all the material accoutrements of a reasonably successful man in our culture: a wife, a good job, a home in an upper-class suburb. Then out of nowhere comes the thunderbolt. His wife informs him, as he is contentedly eating a pork chop, that she is having an affair." An uncommon novel, apparently the author's only published book; per the jacket blurb, he had written three plays, "one produced off Off-Broadway," but I've been unable to find any information about them. Illustrated by (dj design) Anthony Pollice (illustratore). …

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [very light shelfwear only to book; jacket a bit sunned along spine and along left edge of front panel, a bit of wear along top edge]. (pen and ink drawings) INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the ffep: "To ________ / with [heart pierced by arrow] / (We're holding a guest room / open for you) / Lois & Art / Dec. 25, 1968." [It's difficult to tell for certain, but it would appear that the inscription was written by Lois, and that only "Art" was written by Linkletter himself.] Linkletter's story of how, in 1954, he and "some celebrity friends formed a syndicate and prepared to go prospecting in the land where winter was summer and the soldiers wore 'wide-brimmed hats turned up on one side.'" -- i.e., Australia. The venture was a bust, but when his Hollywood friends went back home, Linkletter stayed behind on "a potential sheep station on a huge tract of barren land east of Perth." Here he tells the story of his adventures and misadventures, and also provides "a revealing character sketch of Australia -- the land and its people." Signed by Author. Illustrated by Paul Rigby (illustratore). …

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [nice-looking book, no discernible wear and very clean internally except for what appears to be some liquid-paper "touch-up" on the endpapers, apparently to hide some minor staining; the jacket, too, has some minor staining (from old tape, now removed) on the flaps and at the bottom edge of the rear panel, and a touch of wear at the upper corners of the front panel]. (Film Focus) Series (B&W photographs) An excellent collection of critical pieces on the much-admired American film director. The book includes an interview with Hawks (actually the transcript of an audience discussion at the 1970 Chicago Film Festival), plus essays by Manny Farber, Andrew Sarris, Henri Langlois, Jacques Rivette, Robin Wood, Richard Thompson, Peter Bogdanovich, and others. Films singled out for individual attention in the essays are RIO BRAVO, MAN'S FAVORITE SPORT?, EL DORADO and RIO LOBO. Filmography, selected bibliography, index. The "Film Focus" series was mostly issued in softcover format, with the jacketed hardcover issues being commensurately uncommon.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very Good dj. First Edition. [a nice clean book with minor shelfwear only; the jacket is moderately edgeworn, with a number of tiny nicks and small edge-tears, light scuffing/soiling]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Morris / Weisstein - / all good wishes / Sincerely, / Eddie Cantor / Dec- 20, / 1959." "One of America's best-loved comedians reveals the wise, witty, heart-warming philosophy behind his years of full, successful living." The book is touchingly dedicated to his daughter Marjorie, who had died of cancer in May 1959 (the book was published in December) at age 44. As one widely-syndicated critic of the day wrote: "If you find [the book] 'corny' -- well, it's just too bad for you. You were born too late." Signed by Author. Illustrated by (dj photo) Earl Theisen (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [very light shelfwear, faint soiling to bottom edges of covers, a tiny bit of scuffing along edge of rear cover; jacket shows light wear at extremities, closed tear at top edge of front panel]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED ("Pam M") by the author on the front endpaper. Supposedly to redress the alleged problem that "until now, there has been little humor in women's liberation," the author in this tome "lets down the hair of the liberated woman [and] introduces a little levity -- and a good deal of common sense as well -- into the somber arena of sexual politics." The author, a sometime actress and screenwriter, had liberated herself from her second husband, actor James Mason, in 1964, but apparently thought better of dumping his surname too. Signed by Author.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very Good dj. First Edition. [minimal shelfwear, very slight bump to upper front corner, nice-looking bookplate on front pastedown, a number of lightly-penciled margin notes in text (see Notes); the jacket is moderately edgeworn and lightly soiled, with teeny-tiny paper loss at a couple of corners, age-toning to front and spine panels]. Now-classic novel about the experience of a high school teacher, written by the author (the granddaughter of Sholom Aleichem) based on her own fifteen years' experience of teaching English in the New York City school system. Basis for the 1967 movie of the same name, starring Sandy Dennis in her first starring role after she won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (The movie was released in late June 1967, a good month for movie teachers: it was preceded by just a couple of weeks in U.S. theatres by TO SIR, WITH LOVE, starring Sidney Poitier.) NOTE that this copy has occasional brief comments penciled in the margins -- obviously written by somebody who had themselves been a teacher, as they tend to be sympathetic (albeit relatively un-profound) statements like "so true!" I have left these in place for their possible amusement value, BUT if you would prefer the book to be completely clean I will be glad to erase them without a trace.…

[nice clean book with no significant wear, but with a one-time owner's small neat name-stamp on all three sides of the text block (seriously?); the jacket has a small stain on the spine, but is otherwise immaculate]. "Wildly satirical, delightfully literate spoofs on science," in which "respected professors, scientists and college students, with a keen eye for exposing the absurdities and foibles of mere man, tell you what's really going on in the wide, wacky world of psychology, anthropology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, et al." (price-clipped) [minimal shelfwear to book; jacket is a bit edgeworn and lightly soiled, with a teensy chip at the top of the front panel, but quite a bit of dog-earing (and a short closed tear) at the top of the rear panel]. An exercise/health maintenance book targeted for "today's modern businessman [who] leads a life of constant stress and aggravation.
