Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Condizione: Good. First Thus. In September 1942, a farmer found a quantity of oyster shells while digging out a ferret. Although there was no surface evidence, and no record or legend of anything unusual at the site a trial trench was opened. At 18 inches a mosaic floor was found. Owing to weather con…ditions, no further excavation was possible till the spring of 1943, when weekend work allowed for further investigation. Rooms I and II were found together with a small rubbish heap in the angle of the rooms. A grid of trial holes 25 feet apart laid down during the summer of 1944, gave evidence of an extensive building or buildings and it was decided to suspend excavation until I had more leisure to plot a definite plan and had purchased the land. Work has been continuous each summer since 1956. It is now certain that the Villa was a large estate mansion and that a habitation existed here from early in the 1st Century onward and it would appear that it was an important house in the 3rd Century. It would also appear that it was partly destroyed late in the Century and reconstructed and fully occupied in the 4th Century right down to the barbarian raids of 367/8 A.D. and again partly occupied till after the end of the Roman occupation. Revised Edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 38 pages. Rear cover slightly grubby. no Dust Jacket as published. Staples rusty; light creasing to outer corners. illustrated by b/w. drawings, maps, photo's. & fold-out plan of Villa. Includes glossary of terms used. Quantity Available: 1.
