His analytical mind extended to the field of art criticism, championing the art of Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites and his collected works extended to thirty-nine volumes. John Ruskin's intellectual achievements were marred by an unhappy personal history. His poignant relationships with Effie Gray and later Rose La Touche were factors which contributed to the tragic decline at the end of his life. 'Joan Abse treats Ruskin with deep and proper respect from start to finish; and she writes best of all on his ideas about art and artists.' - Philip Toynbee, Observer." Wrappers faded and marked, minor abrasions, edges of textblock spotted, otherwise Good.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Mrs Valerie Roberts, With my appreciation and warm thanks for her help, from Charlotte Wolff". This memoir, Wolff's second, explores her youth, escape from Germany, time in Paris and London, and her studies in psychology and sexuality. Wolff (1897-1986) was born in Riesenburg (now Prabuty, Poland) and studied literature and philosophy at the University of Freiburg before graduating in medicine. She then worked as a physician and psychotherapist in the predominantly under-served working class districts of Berlin. In 1933 she was forced to flee Germany; she first went to the artist's community of Sanary-sur-Mer in Paris where she befriended Aldous Huxley and started studying the psychiatric properties of hands. She travelled with Huxley to London in 1935. In 1936, she published her germinal work Studies in Hand Reading, which featured an analysis of the hands of many of those in her new social circle including Virginia Woolf and George Bernard Shaw. Wolff settled in London working as a psychiatrist and continued her study of hand-reading in three further works; The Human Hand (1943), A Psychology of Gesture (1945), and The Hand in Psychological Diagnosis (1951). Wolff is also widely respected for her pioneering works on lesbianism and bisexuality; her work Bisexuality: A Study (1977), the result of interviews with 150 self-identified bisexuals, was the first serious academic study to be published on the subject. Octavo. Original maroon boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Single gathering proud; jacket clipped, spine sunned with central vertical crease and faint damp mark to foot, minor creasing to edges: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
