Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white frontispiece, black & white drawing, map, owner's embossed seal (on two pages), otherwise excellent. 95 pp. The true (previously unpublished) account of Nicholas Pateshall who was Third Lieutenant on the convict ship HMS Calcutta, which sailed for New Holland in 1803. Edited and introduced by Marjorie Tipping, who found the manuscript in the Hereford County Record Office. One of the few early accounts of the aborted Sullivan Bay settlement (prior to the foundation of Melbourne nearby). Descriptions of native people and animals seen, plus events and activities aboard the ship. This is the first of a proposed series of small publications related to the early settlement of Port Phillip and Van Diemen's Land. Arthur was born at Geelong, Victoria, on 6th August 1892. His family then moved to St. James about 20 miles north of Benalla in north-eastern Victoria. Arthur completed his education at the State School in St. James. Arthur's father, George Coles was a substantial retailer and Arthur became part of the Coles family stores. From 1921 to 1946 he was Director of G. J. Coles & Coy. Ltd. From 1938 to 1940 he was Lord Mayor of Melbourne. He enlisted in 1916 at the outbreak of World War 1 and was an original member of the 6th Battalion, A.I.F. The chronology at the rear of this book lists all his achievements. The authors have put this very special book together as a small tribute to a well-loved colleague and friend. (Privately published in a limited edition of 1500 copies.
