Condizione: Good. 1st edition. Half calf, G+. ivi+[x]+[ii]+288pp, engraved frontis, subscribers list & a single page of adverts after the preface & before the main body of the text, signatures L & L3 are cancels, upper board detached, leather a little rubbed & worn, occasional foxing & yellowing of the paper, a fair copy of an uncommon work. The work contains a preface in which Fawkes thanks the help he has received from his peers including Zachary Pearce, John Jortin, and Samuel Johnson. Burnaby furnished the Essay. Francis Fawkes [ 1721 - 1777 ] English poet & translator, who was, in the latter role, considered by his contemporaries to be the best since Alexander Pope. His translations are still selected for modern anthologies to this day, such is their merit. 500 grams.…

Full-Leather. Condizione: Good. Reprint. Later edition from 1771 in five volumes but missing volume V: I (311pp including essay), II (300pp), III (340pp) and IV (335pp). Contemporary full leather binding. The title and volume number panels have been lost on all the volumes. The volume numbers are stamped on the spines. The spines have chipping at the tops and bottoms with some vertical cracking to the surfaces. There is also little cracking to the edges - the binding is firm with the exception of volume I where there is a gap along the top half. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying and there is some light surface wear to the front and rear panels. Name of a previous owner in ink to the title pages - Lady Wale of Shelford near Cambridge - and there is the name of an earlier owner above this. Browning and some spotting to the endpapers. Volume I has a little more wear to the spine than the other volumes and there is a little edge creasing and tearing to the fold-out illustration of Troy. Volume II has two pages which protrude slightly with some edge wear. Volume III has quite heavy staining over half the surface of the front panel and a large stain which affects the top half of the pages through to page 30 and then diminishes gradually through to page 150 with these pages only a little affected. There is also a little creasing to the top corners of pages 77 to 86. Volume IV has an eight page section of the text which protrudes a little with some edge creasing. There is light browning to the pages with some spots and marks in places and in particular to the pages at the front of the books but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. Heavy item due to it being four volumes so there will be an additional postage charge for overseas orders.…

Fourth Richardson Edition. in contemporary mottled calf, the spine gilt in compartments with raised bands, red goatskin label lettered in gilt, binding slightly rubbed and headcap chipped, but generally a good, sound copy. 8vo (172 x 100 mm), pp. [ii], xxxiii, [3], 192, with an engraved title-page and 25 engraved plates, each with multiple images illustrating each of the 244 fables, An attractive copy of the fourth of five illustrated editions with Richardson?s Life of Aesop. It was first published in 1739, with a title-page dated 1740, with subsequent editions in 1749, 1753 (two issues) and 1775. All of the editions are scarce, with ESTC listing four copies of the first edition, two copies of the second, five of the third edition. The 25 engraved plates include delightful illustrations in miniature for each of the fables, with a brief caption and fable number given above each illustration. The engraved title-page is also very attractive, with an idealised illustration of a landscape peopled with different animals.
