Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo. 76pp. Disbound pamphlet without wraps otherwise in fine condition. The first edition of the first known work published by Rev. Wilkes. Rev. Dr. Henry Wilkes was a British born, Canadian Congregationalist minister and educator. He emigrated to Canada at age 14 and quickly established himself in commerce. He left Canada for Scotland a decade later to study at the Theological Academy where he was ordained in 1832. While in Scotland he began recruiting ministers for immigration to Canada. A year after publishing this pamphlet, he returned to Canada as the minister of the Zion Congregational Church in Montreal. He was very much involved in education and co-founded the Congregational Theological Institute. In this pamphlet, Rev. Wilkes defends voluntaryism and argues that according to the bible, man has a moral duty to bring permanent good out of temporary evils "such was the position maintained by the enlightened friends of negro emancipation." He continues "that man had no moral right to property in his fellow man, and that so long as slavery continued, the dearest rights of humanity were trampled under foot", calling for "immediate emancipation." He calls for an independent church, self-funded and autonomous from government control, using America as an example beginning with the Puritan colony established in Plymouth in 1620. Rev. Wilkes counters Rev. John Gordon Lorimer's views on the American church, saying "This is an illustration of his utter incompetency to write about America." Rare. OCLC and Jisc show only 4 copies, all in the UK. [Voluntary Principal] [Slavery] [Establishment of churches-America].…

First edition, inscribed by author. 8vo. 76pp. Disbound pamphlet without wraps, old crease to lower foremargin of title-page otherwise in fine condition. Top and foremargins cut a bit close, shaving some of the inscription. Gift inscription from Henry Wilkes above title "The Rev. James Matheson D.D. with the kind regards of the author". The first edition of the first known work published by Rev. Wilkes. Rev. Dr. Henry Wilkes was a British born, Canadian Congregationalist minister and educator. Wilkes counters Rev. John Gordon Lorimer's views on the American church, saying "This is an illustration of his utter incompetency to write about America." The recipient of this pamphlet was Rev. Dr. James Matheson (1793-1846), a Congregationalist minister and abolitionist who traveled widely in America in 1834, with his traveling companion, Rev. Andrew Reed (1787-1862). Together they recounted their exploits in 2 volumes entitled "A Narrative of the Visit to the American Churches", in 1835. Rev. Mathesen was acquainted with Frederick Douglass and an extract of his lecture was read at Douglass' speech in Bristol, [UK] on September 2nd, 1846, shortly after Matheson's untimely death. Rare.
