Hardcover. Condizione: New. Brand New. RIALTO : Peter Hujar / Piter Gudzhar Early Works | 1955 through 1969 - 74 photographs from his early body of work. This unique exhibition catalogue, published with Rodovid Press in Kyiv Ukraine. The lushly illustrated publication features 77 photographs, some never seen or published. Three important interviews with Hujar's closest friends and colleagues, plus a scholarly essay on his work with the photographer Richard Avedon, chronicle Hujar's ceaseless creative exploration and observation of life in the East Village of New York. While Hujar's later work from the 1970s and '80s may be better known, Doroshenko locates a seed in these early pieces. He noted Hujar's strict Ukrainian upbringing (he didn't speak English until he entered kindergarten), as much as how he entered the field of photography without any formal training. Hujar's Ukrainian grandmother raised him exclusively in the Ukrainian language until he was 5 years old. Hujar's difficult and unstable upbringing in a troubled household influenced his artistry and vision significantly, and he turned to photography, which would become his port in a storm. He would later plant his roots in the heart of New York City's East Village, also known as the Ukrainian Village, where he would be enthralled by the world of performance art, music, theatre, and literature—subcultures with which his life and art would become synonymous. Learning from some of the greatest photographers in the industry, his training, paired with his identity and background, resulted in the powerfully disruptive and influential photographs that he created in the early years of his career. "Rialto," which means meeting place, alludes to Hujar's Second Avenue studio, at which his fellow artists and downtown denizens often congregated. Peter Hujar (illustratore).…

Hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. pp. 103; 93. Square 4to., measuring 23 x 25 cm. Padded pictorial boards; two volumes beautifully bound in one. Richly illustrated in colour throughout. Text in English and Ukrainian. No detectable flaws: contents remain bright, clean, and unmarked with firm, sound binding. Near fine. Uncommon in commerce. Corresponds to OCLC #499154688. SIGNED by the author(s) to the title page. Burden of Innocence is the project of a Canadian Ukrainian, the painter Natalka Husar, who has made a name for herself in her field in both Canada and abroad. Here Husar's visual work is presented with her own commentary on what she sees as the social ills and goods in contemporary Ukraine: the subject matter is post-Orange Revolution Ukraine and our continually shifting, always-problematic but utterly abiding relationship with our parents' homeland and the homeland of our imaginations. Burden of Innocence is a bridge between various worlds: Canada and Ukraine, painting and writing, and verbal and visual images. …
