Einband berieben. - In the following pages, selected empirical studies - documenting the effect of lacking reliability - are discussed. Research findings are presented under the headings of observer, subject, instrument bias, and biases due to setting and method. The allocation of individual studies to specific subheadings may appear artificial at times, due to the fact that very rarely is one factor acting alone. Also, few of these studies, investigating the influence of multiple factors, attempt to rank them with respect to their biasing influence, let alone to estimate the quantitative influence of each and of their interactions. As will be seen below, the majority of methodological studies in the social sciences examine the effect of the interview as a method of data collection, in particular, of the questionnaire as instrument and the interviewer as observer. The medical sciences seem to focus on observer and instrument (apparatus) reliability. The dearth of empirical observations on the impact of other aspects of the measurement process suggests that much methodological work remains to be done before empirical studies in sociomedical research will be truly reproducible.
