Soft cover. Condizione: New. SIGNED AUTHOR BOOKPLATE INCLUDED - The small, curiously named village of Secessionville, just outside of Charleston, South Carolina was the site of an early war skirmish, the consequences of which might have been enormous had the outcome been different. It quickly would be forgotten, however, as the…Seven Days battles, fought shortly afterward and far to the north, attracted the attention of Americans on both sides of the conflict. The battle at Secessionville was as bloody and hard fought as any similar sized encounter during the war. But it was poorly planned and poorly led by the Union commanders whose behavior did not do justice to the courage of their men. That courage was acknowledged by Confederate Lt. Iredell Jones who wrote, "let us never again disparage our enemy and call them cowards, for nothing was ever more glorious than their three charges in the face of a raking fire of grape and canister."x For the Federals, the campaign on James Island was a joint Army-Navy operation which suffered from inter-service rivalries and no small amount of mutual contempt. Brig. Gen. David Hunter, the overall Union commander, lost interest in the campaign and turned effective control over to his subordinate Brig. Gen. Henry Benham whose ego and abrasive personality was a significant problem for the officers who served directly under him. On the Confederate side were men like John C. Pemberton, oddly enough a West Point classmate of Benham, who never gained the respect of his subordinates either. The civilian authorities diligently worked behind his back to have him relieved and replaced. He did, however, oversee the construction of a formidable line of defensive works which proved strong enough in the end to save Charleston for much of the war. In Six Miles from Charleston, Five Minutes to Hell, historian Jim Morgan examines the lead up to the James Island campaign as well as the skirmish itself on June 16, 1862 and its aftermath. By including several original sources not previously explored, he takes a fresh look at this small, but potentially game-changing fight, and shows that it was of much more than merely local interest at the time.

Johnston concentrated his Southern divisions at Corinth, a major railroad center in Mississippi. His bold plan called for his Army of the Mississippi to march north and launch a surprise attack against General Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army of the Tennessee before it could link up with another Union army on the way to join it. The bloody and decisive April 6~ 7, 1862, battle at Shiloh changed the entire course of the American Civil War. When the fighting stopped, the casualties totaled nearly 24,000. The stunning Northern victory thrust Grant into the national spotlight, claimed the life of Johnston, and forever buried the still~lingering notion that the Civil War might be a short conflict. Edward Cunningham was a young Ph.D. candidate in 1966 studying under the legendary Dr. T Harry Williams at Louisiana State University when he researched and wrote Shiloh and the Westem Campaign of 1862. Although it remained unpublished, many Shiloh experts and park rangers consider it to be the best overall treatment of the battle ever written. Indeed, Shiloh historiographv is just now catching up with Cunningham's conclusions. The young doctoral student was decades ahead of modern scholarship. Dr. Cunningham diligently located previously untapped sources rich with personal anecdotes and invigorated his narrative with them. Unlike many historians, Cunningham was not content to accept the standard version of events. Instead, he carefully studied the sources and analyzed what they revealed. For example, he was the first historian to question whether the fighting in the Hornet's Nest was really critical to the outcome of the battle (he concludes it was not); the first to challenge publicly whether more than a dozen different assaults were really launched against the Sunken Road position (he could only confirm seven); and the first to conclude that Daniel Ruggles' artillery~studded line did not have sixty~two Confederate pieces (Ruggles had at most 51 cannon). Dr. Cunningham spent as much ink on the western side of the battlefield around the Crossroads (where the Hamburg~Purdy and Corinth~Pittsburg roads intersect) as he did on any other part of the field. His path~breaking work in that sector turned Shiloh historiography on its head. The combat waged around the Crossroads is now widely recognized as more important to the outcome of the battle than previously believed. Western Civil War historians Drs. Gary D. Joiner and Timothy B. Smith have resurrected Cunningham's beautifully written and deeply researched manuscript from its undeserved obscurity. Fully edited and richly annotated with updated citations and observations, 30 original maps, a complete order of battle, table of losses, photo galleries of the leading generals, and a photographic tour of the field, Shiloh and the Western Campoign of 1862 will be welcomed by everyone who enjoys battle history at its finest.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. SIGNED EDITOR BOOKPLATE INCLUDED - "What If . . . ?" Every Civil War armchair general asks the question. Possibilities unfold. Disappointments vanish. Imaginations soar. More questions arise. Asking "What if . . ." is often more than an exercise in wishful fantasy. A serious inquiry sparks rigorous ex…ploration, demands critical thinking, and unlocks important insights. The Great "What Ifs" of the American Civil War: Historians Tackle the Conflict's Most Intriguing Possibilities is a collection of thirteen essays by the historians at Emerging Civil War, including a foreword by acclaimed alternate history writer Peter G. Tsouras. Each entry focuses on one of the most important events of the war and unpacks the options of the moment. To understand what happened, we must look at what could have happened, with the full multitude of choices before us and a clear and objective eye. "What if" is a tool for illumination. This is not a collection of alternate histories or counterfactual scenarios. Rather, it is an invitation to ask, to learn, and to wonder, "What if . . . ?".

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. Thundering across the screen, Judah Ben-Hur s iconic chariot race against his former friend turned bitter foe remains an indelible part of cinematic history and established Charlton Heston as an international superstar. In many ways, the race was a metaphor for the actor… s dynamic life, symbolizing his struggle to establish himself in his profession. Brian Steel Wills captures for the first time a comprehensive view of the actor s climb to fame, his search for the perfect performance, and the meaningful roles he played in support of the causes he embraced in Running the Race: The Public Face of Charlton Heston. Heston was born and raised in the Michigan woodlands and suburbs of Chicago, where he found his love of acting in the books he read and the movies he saw. Chuck Heston s introduction to the craft that would become his life s work began at New Trier High School and carried over into Northwestern University. The Second World War interrupted his journey when he served his country, after which he and his wife Lydia headed to Asheville, North Carolina, where they both acted and directed in theater. The lights of New York City and Broadway beckoned, and live television offered an important platform, but Hollywood and feature films were his destiny. His roles were as varied as they were powerful, and included stints as Moses, Ben-Hur, El Cid, Michelangelo, Mike Vargas, and Charles Chinese Gordon under legendary directors like Cecil B. DeMille, William Wyler, Franklin Schaffner, and Orson Welles. He shifted to science fiction in Planet of the Apes and Soylent Green, a wide range of action and disaster films, as well as more nuanced roles such as Will Penny. Over his decades of performance Heston defined and redefined his public face in a constant quest for an audience for his work. He undertook wide-ranging public service roles for the government, the arts, and other causes. His leadership in the Screen Actors Guild and American Film Institute carried him from Hollywood to the halls of Congress. He became an outspoken advocate of the arts and other public and charitable causes, marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Washington, and supported Second Amendment rights with the National Rifle Association. He did so even when his positions often clashed with other actors on issues ranging from nuclear arms, national security, and gun rights. The proud independent shifted decidedly to the Republican Party and appeared at political rallies and conventions, but rebuffed calls to run for office in favor of assuming similar roles on the big screen. Award-winning historian Brian Steel Wills dug deep to paint a rich portrait of Heston s extraordinary life a mix of complications and complexities that touched film, television, theater, politics, and society. His carefully crafted public face was impactful in more ways than the ordinarily shy and private family man could have ever imagined.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. The American Civil War left indelible marks on the country. In the century and a half since the war, Americans have remembered the war in different ways. Veterans placed monuments to commemorate their deeds on the battlefield. In doing so, they often set in stone and bro…nze specific images that may have conflicted with the factual historical record. Erecting monuments and memorials became a way to commemorate the past, but they also became important tools for remembering that past in particular ways. Monuments honor, but they also embody the very real tension between history and the way we remember that history what we now today call memory. Civil War Monuments and Memory: Favorite Stories and Fresh Perspectives from the Historians at Emerging Civil War explores some of the ways people monumented and memorialized the war and how those markers have impacted our understanding of it. This collection of essays brings together the best scholarship from Emerging Civil War s blog, symposia, and podcast all of it revised and updated coupled with original pieces, designed to shed new light and insight on the monuments and memorials that give us some of our most iconic and powerful connections to the battlefields and the men who fought there.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. SIGNED AUTHOR BOOKPLATE INCLUDED - Jackson, Mississippi, was the third Confederate state capital to fall to Union forces. When Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant captured the important rail junction in May 1863, however, he did so almost as an afterthought. Drawing on dozens of…primary sources, contextualized by the latest scholarship on Grant's Vicksburg campaign, The Battle of Jackson, Mississippi, May 14, 1863, offers the most comprehensive account ever published on the fall of the Magnolia State's capital during Grant's inexorable march on Vicksburg. General Grant had his eyes set not on Jackson but on Vicksburg, the "Gibraltar of the Confederacy," the invaluable prize that had eluded him for the better part of a year. He finally marched south on the far side of the Mississippi River and crossed onto Mississippi soil to approach Vicksburg by land from the east. As he drove through the interior of the state, a chance encounter with Confederates at Raymond alerted him to a potential threat massing farther east in Jackson under the leadership of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, one of the Confederacy's most respected field officers. Jackson was a vital transportation and communications hub and a major Confederate industrial center, and its fall removed vital logistical support for the Southern army holding Vicksburg. Grant turned on a dime and made for Jackson to confront the growing danger. He had no way of knowing that Johnston was already planning to abandon the vital state capital. The Southern general's behavior has long puzzled historians, and some believe his stint in Jackson was the nadir of his long career. The loss of Jackson isolated Vicksburg and helped set up a major confrontation between Federal and Confederate forces a few days later at Champion Hill in one of the most decisive battles of the war. The capital's fall demonstrated that Grant could march into Jefferson Davis' home state and move about with impunity, and not even a war hero like Joe Johnston could stop him. Students of Vicksburg will welcome this outstanding addition to the campaign literature.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. SIGNED AUTHOR BOOKPLATE INCLUDED - Thirteen Months in Dixie tells a rollicking tale of adventure, captivity, hardship, and heroism during the last year of the Civil Warin the protagonist's own words. After being hidden away for decades as a family heirloom, the incredibl…e manuscript is finally available, annotated and illustrated, for the first time. Oscar Federhen was a new recruit to the 13th Independent Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery, when he shipped out to Louisiana in the spring of 1864 to participate in the Red River Campaign. Not long after his arrival at the front, a combination of ill-luck and bad timing led to his capture. Federhen was marched overland to Tyler, Texas, where he was held as a prisoner of war in Camp Ford, the largest POW camp west of the Mississippi River. Thirteen Months in Dixie recounts Federhen's always thrilling and occasionally horrifying ordeals as a starving prisoner. The captured artillerist tried his hand at escaping several times and faced sadistic guards and vicious hounds before finally succeeding. But his ordeal was just beginning. The young soldier faced a series of challenges as he made his way cross-country through northeast Texas to reach Union lines. Federhen had to dodge regular Confederates, brigands, and even Comanches in his effort to get home. He rode for a time with Rebel irregular cavalry, during which he witnessed robberies and even cold-blooded murder. When he was recaptured and thought to be a potential deserter, he escaped yet again and continued his bid for freedom. Federhen wrote his recollections in lively engaging style not long after the war, but they sat unpublished until Jeaninne Surette Honstein and Steven Knowlton carefully transcribed and annotated his incredible manuscript. Numerous illustrations grace the pages, including two from Federhen's own pen. Thirteen Months in Dixie is not only a gripping true story that would have otherwise been lost to history, but a valuable primary source about the lives of Civil War prisoners and everyday Texans during the conflict.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. SIGNED EDITOR BOOKPLATE INCLUDED - William Royston Geise was a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Texas at Austin in the early 1970s when he researched and wrote The Confederate Military Forces in the Trans-Mississippi West, 1861- 1865: A Study in Command in 1974. Alth…ough it remained unpublished, it was not wholly unknown. Deep-diving researchers were aware of Dr. Geise's work and lamented the fact that it was not widely available to the general public. In many respects, studies of the Trans-Mississippi Theater are only now catching up with Geise. This intriguing book traces the evolution of Confederate command and how it affected the shifting strategic situation and general course of the war. Dr. Geise accomplishes his task by coming at the question in a unique fashion. Military field operations are discussed as needed, but his emphasis is on the functioning of headquarters and staffthe central nervous system of any military command. This was especially so for the Trans-Mississippi. After July 1863, the only viable Confederate agency west of the great river was the headquarters at Shreveport. That hub of activity became the sole location to which all isolated players, civilians and military alike, could look for immediate overall leadership and a sense of Confederate solidarity. By filling these needs, the Trans-Mississippi Department assumed a unique and vital role among Confederate military departments and provided a focus for continued Confederate resistance west of the Mississippi River. The author's work mining primary archival sources and published firsthand accounts, coupled with a smooth and clear writing style, helps explain why this remote department (referred to as "Kirby Smithdom" after Gen. Kirby Smith) failed to function efficiently, and how and why the war unfolded there as it did. Trans-Mississippi Theater historian and Ph.D. candidate Michael J. Forsyth (Col., U.S. Army, Ret.) has resurrected Dr. Geise's smoothly written and deeply researched manuscript from its undeserved obscurity. This edition, with its original annotations and Forsyth's updated citations and observations, is bolstered with original maps, photographs, and images. Students of the war in general, and the Trans-Mississippi Theater in particular, will delight in its long overdue publication.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. Savas Beatie, 2005, New York. Hard Cover. Book condition: As New. Dust jacket condition: As New. Stated "First Savas Beatie edition 2005", assumed first printing due to absence of any number line. Hardcover in unclipped dustjacket. 9-1/4" tall, 507 num…bered pages includes "Appendices", "Endnotes", "Bibliography" and "Index". This book is nearly pristine: it is square, spotlessly clean, free of corner bumps and edge dings with a moderate bump at the head of the spine; there is a very faint tannish stain, the size of a pencil eraser, on the fore edge; hinges are strong. The interior is perfectly clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and any sort of paper damage. Not remaindered or ex-library. The dust jacket is clean and free of tears, scratches, scrapes, and fading, with a tiny bump/crease at the head of the spine; jacket is now protected by mylar jacket. There is no price on the jacket but also no slug on the rear panel and no mention anywhere of the phrase "Book Club", so I assume that this is not a book club edition, but this is the only book that I have ever seen from this publisher. From the rear flap: " . . . a complete and balanced examination pf the siege [of Yorktown, 1781] and the participants involved". A very good military history.
