Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Terza Vita, a third life. This enchanting book looks at the fruitful opportunities of new interpersonal relationships after a two-year compulsory break. Rome, artistic and monumental, is the setting. The background is lively yet anonymous: empty spaces spared from ubiquitous tourism. It was here that Mar Saez decided to observe the reappearing residents, and above all the yearning young lovers, on the beaches of Rome's Ostia seaside resort. Saez looks at her subjects from a proximity that is as invasive as it is complicit. She wanted her photographs to be permeable to the intimacy of those portrayed. Saez captures their vulnerability, in an agreed exchange between the photographer, the photographed and the future spectator during a moment of historical and social transition. Playing out in an iconic multi-temporal city, Terza Vita approaches the concept of freedom and the map of affections born in the bosom of a third life, a life beyond the nostalgia of a stable past, beyond the shock of uncertainty of the present, beyond the future. During the pandemic years, Elliot Ross captured images of crows taking to the air from the roofs surrounding his apartment on Russian Hill in San Francisco, California. It became a contemplative piece of art about one of the most intelligent bird species in existence.Crows Ascending is dedicated to the memory of Elliot's younger brother Michael. Michael had a profound intellectual disability caused by lifelong epilepsy. He survived a severe case of Covid-19 in 2020 only to die of Parkinson's-related pneumonia months later. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Fred Baldwin's life took a turn in the direction of the extraordinary when he decided to interview and photograph the sometimes difficult Pablo Picasso. Baldwin, in his last year of college, delivered a letter with his own drawings to the artist. This made Picasso laugh and opened his door.Baldwin's life changed. He followed his dream, used his imagination, overcame fear, and acted - now he felt could accomplish anything. This account takes the reader to high adventure worldwide, but also to disaster and failure. This illustrated love affair with freedom shows how a camera became a passport to the world. But the trip started much earlier. The son of an American diplomat, who died when Baldwin was five, the book describes being raised by strong aristocratic southern women. A string of disasters associated with six elite boarding schools and one university led to his exile to work in his u ncle's factory in Savannah, Georgia. Baldwin escaped by joining the Marines and was immediately s hipped to North Korea in 1950, where he was w ounded and decorated twice. After Korea, Baldwin moved to Paris but shortly after returned to a junior college i n Georgia, won a scholarship to Harvard and then transferred to Columbia, where he decided to go to Europe to celebrate his last summer vacation of freedom. Meeting with Picasso inspired Baldwin to teach himself photography by visiting MoMa and every photo gallery in New York. But New York was expensive, so Baldwin moved to Savannah, where he learned to survive by photographing local children. It worked, but i n spite of financial success, Baldwin wanted to be a photojournalist. By chance he spent a day an d a night with the Ku Klux Klan, then headed for Scandinavia and the Arctic. What followed were picture stories about reindeer migrations, Nobel Prize coverage, underwater pictures of cod fishing in Arctic Norway, polar bear expeditions. In 1963, Baldwin join ed the Civil Rights Movement, photographing Martin Luther King. A two - year stint as Peace Corps director in Borneo was followed by more photojournalism in India and Afghanistan. The stories in this book are often laced with self - deprecating humour, a mec hanism that Baldwin had developed early as a survival tool. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. "Load right, aim sharp, and shoot well. The satisfaction of good pictures will be your reward." - Brownie Hawkeye Instruction Manual, 1959This is the first picture I took in my life. Roll 1. Frame 1. The Hawkeye has a fixed focus lens and no F-stops so I can't take credit for the exposure. But I'm proud of the composition. I realized from that very first experience that I could speak though images. I became a photographer that day. Now, I feel the same excitement every time I pick up my camera. - David Pace, March 2020, sixty years after he took that picture in February 1959David's rich childhood archive documents the origin of the creative impulse in the life of a remarkable photographer. In addition, it traces the trajectory of the post-war America in transition from an agricultural economy to an economy based on consumer products. It captures, as well, an important moment in the pre-history of one of America's most iconic locations: Sunnyvale, California, the heart of what we now call Silicon Valley. The neighborhood where David photographed family and friends with the Brownie Hawkeye is now the neighborhood of Apple, LinkedIn, Google, and Nokia. The young photographer, with his ability to "speak through images," left us a set of powerful Hawkeye photographs that narrate a story, both personal and cultural, of the origin and history of Silicon Valley. - Diane Jonte-Pace, March 2021 Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Beautiful photographic-psychological processing of a divorce Danielle Goldstein began this project thirteen years ago at a time of relative innocence. Both in her own life and, in retrospect, in the world. Transience began in an ancient hotel room in Spain. The room felt haunted and Danielle started thinking about the many souls that may have inhabited that room. She wanted to try to document both the physical and metaphorical space, so she used herself as a kind of placeholder. The project took hold and became a defining aspect of her work. In 2017 Danielle's world blew up when her husband and she separated. She was devastated, destroyed, barely functional. Goldstein understands that this work is highly personal, a diary of sorts of her mid to lateish life. And she also understands and appreciates her privilege in visiting the beauty of the places she has been blessed to be able to visit. Yet her pain was real and all encompassing. And her rebirth has been as well. Transience is a beautiful and truly original testimony of conquering despair. Goldstein's exquisite book can give a tiny bit of joy, solace and hope to anyone who is feeling challenged by their circumstances. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Dena's daughter Margaret recently announced the new name and non-binary identity as Alex, and while she fully supports this, she's learning who the new person is, learning to love who Alex is becoming, and considering her own evolution as a mother. The project You Refuse to Believe that You Ever Liked Pink unfolded over a year during which Alex and Dena came to understand what their transitions looked like and meant. As a young adult with autism spectrum disorder and countless physical ailments, Alex struggles to exist in a world that seems to run counter to how Dena's child understands it. Along with the gender transition, Alex came into an awareness as an asexual (ace) adult, and this book reflects the search for all these identities. Even after a year of growth, Alex and Dena are still learning to navigate their relationship, define their roles, and how to claim their place in contemporary society.Unlike other work about this subject, this book not only investigates Alex's identity, but also how a mother transitions with her transgender child. Dena Eber mentored and supported similar young adults, but this time, she's the mother. This work is her experience, and at the request of Alex, it reveals her child's experience as well. Dena created this book for herself, for Alex, and for all those who love and care about someone who is transforming away from their birth gender. You Refuse to Believe that You Ever Liked Pink examines the relationship between Dena and Alex through changing circumstances, supported by the unconditional love that they hold for one another. As for Dena's voice, both pain and joy come through as she mourns the loss of who she thought Alex would be and falls in love with the person that Alex is becoming. The book reflects my feelings, thoughts and memories during my search for answers to the questions I could not ask Hans anymore. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Just like Batchelder's 2015 publication Tideland, Creatures depict nothing more than small sections of beach, which, in theory, every vacationer could see. But he sees what nobody sees. As a practiced observer, David Batchelder enters a world of dreams, of the strange and the non-rational, in order to encounter faces, ghosts, angels, or terrestrial and extraterrestrial forms in this world beyond the real. He invites viewers to use the photographs as projection surfaces for their own worlds of imagination. For three years David Batchelder took photos of the sand on the beach not far from his home. In the sand he finds shapes of creatures, formed by tideland, shells or other objects one can find on any beach. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Superb multi-layered existential documentary Cindy Konits began photographing herself with an obsolete professional instant camera and expired film after discovering it, unused, at the bottom of her studio closet. The cameras features enable the creation of slow, meditative self-portraits in sunlight and shadow, within and between rooms and the surrounding landscape. In these images, Konits examines architecture as a holding environment that supports emotional and reflective thought, functioning as a container for the storage and recall of experience embedded in rooms, buildings, and the physical features that define natural boundaries. Approaching the threshold of a room, one is aware of being separate from it, but once inside, the room disappears from conscious awareness, as self and architecture merge. This Room Will Survive Me invites readers to experience rooms inwardly and sense the slow flow of time and memory. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Will Vogt's remarkable photographs exploring the daily life of America's upper class. Behind the Hedges follows the sensational success of Will Vogts debut monograph, These Americans, and extends his inquiry into the American upper class. In this book, the excesses of youth have given way to the refined cadence of tradition. Vogts images draw power from their tension between proximity and distance, functioning as portraits of a class oriented toward preservation within a nation otherwise defined by reinvention. They depict a community adept at weathering change while maintaining its habit of self-reproduction. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
